Opis:
Groundwater is the main source for many uses around the city of Ouargla. In this study, the DRASTIC method was used to assess the vulnerability of the groundwater aquifer. Seven hydrogeological parameters of the model (D water depth, R efficient charging, A aquifer type, S soil type, T topography, I unsaturated zone and C hydraulic conductivity) were measured and mapped. The intrinsic vulnerability map of the shallow aquifer, using the DRASTIC method, shows a high to very high vulnerability to pollution; 91.6% of the study area has high vulnerability, 8.4% of it has very high vulnerability. The comparison of the DRASTIC maps with the land use map illustrates that the agglomerations and irrigated areas are the most vulnerable areas to pollution, due to the low depth of the aquifer and the infiltration of significant domestic and irrigation wastewater. The results show that the relationship coefficient between the DRASTIC index and nitrate concentration is R = 0.73. This indicates that the groundwater vulnerability mapping by using the DRASTIC method can be applied for sensible groundwater resources management and land-use planning in the study area.

The chemical composition of groundwater is affected by many features, including the impact caused by surrounding rocks. The Nile aquifer is surrounded by the calcareous structural plateau along the Assiut governorate on both sides. This paper aims at studying the effect of surrounding rocks on the chemical composition of groundwater in the Nile aquifer along the Assiut governorate. Fifty-five samples were taken from drinking water stations and irrigation wells in 2015, and then analyzed chemically in water and soil fertility laboratory located in the irrigation ministry in Assiut. Aquachem software package was used to determine the groundwater type and rock source deduction. Piper-trilinear diagram was plotted to show the hydrochemical facies. Furthermore, Gibbs diagram was applied to determine the correlation between water composition and aquifer lithological characteristics. The results revealed that nearly all of the groundwater samples drop in the water-rock interaction field. The results of rock source deduction show that the ratio of Cl to the sum of anions is less than 0.8 for all samples, concluding that the rock weathering is dominant. According to the criterion of TDS values, 78% of all the samples indicated that the carbonate weathering is prevalent; in turn, the ratio of Mg to Ca plus Mg shows that limestone-dolomite weathering is predominant. These results confirm that the calcareous structural plateau surrounding the Nile aquifer along the Assiut governorate has an effect on the groundwater chemistry by interacting between groundwater and limestone rocks which are the main component of the calcareous plateau.

The depletion of aquifer systems in arid and semiarid regions worldwide is causing acute water scarcity and quality degradation, and leading to extensive ecosystem damages. Groundwater is exposed to a variety of anthropogenic water pollution, such as raw wastewater disposal in the Draa Wadi and the use of septic tanks. In this respect, a study performed in some wells of Fezouata (South-east of Morocco) aimed at both discovering the main components of the aquatic subterranean fauna unknown up to now in this area, and the potential relationships between this fauna and the water quality The principal physico-chemical characteristics of water were measured between November 2019 to March 2021 for 15 wells, which were selected considering their position with respect to the pollution sources known in surface. The Fezouata groundwater is distinguished by its high salinity with an increasing gradient from upstream to downstream. The aquatic fauna in the 15 wells showed 12 stygofauna species. In the protected wells which are situated far from the pollution sources, the fauna is dominated by Cirolanidae, Hydrobiidae, Metacrangonctydae, Stenasellidae, and Thermosbaenacea. On the other hand, in the less protected well, close to the pollution sources, the fauna is made of epigean species, such as insect’s larva, mainly Culicidae and Chironomidae. The analysis of the water quality and the subterranean biodiversity shows that the latter decreases with increasing groundwater pollution. It seems that the impact of the acute pollution affected the stygocenose even by reducing drastically the biodiversity.

This paper presents an analysis of groundwater from the intakes “Park” and “Motława” situated in Tczew (Poland). These water intakes have varied hydrological conditions and volume of utilized resources (wells). In this area, the deepest drillings extend to 180 m (cretaceous stage) with 20% being constituted by tertiary-quaternary formations with depths ranging from 60 to 63.7 m. The distribution of water from the intakes depended on the population to which it was supplied and the average production of water ranged from 5,802.4 to 7,591.5 m3 per day on “Motława” intake and from 3,196.3 to 4,125.4 m3/day on “Park” intake and did not exceed the production capacity specified by the regulations. In 1994–2009, analyses of water intended for consumption from the above-mentioned intakes in Tczew were performed by testing the water reaction and the content of ammonium ions and chlorides. In the period of the studies, the permissible reaction was not exceeded and the concentrations of ammonium ion and chlorides were on a relatively steady level.

Opis:
The Mio-plio-quaternary aquifer of the Djelfa Syncline is part of a region in Algeria which is characterized by the lack of surface water resources and located in a semi-arid climate. Since alluvial aquifers, and among them our aquifer, are the most vulnerable because of thier direct exposure to the pollution caused by the infiltrated pollutants, this work focused on the assessement of groundwater pollution vulnerability, hazard and risk. Thus, several methods were used; for this purpose, such as the DRASTIC and WQI methods mapped using a GIS. The results obtained clearly show a low to moderate vulnerability. The DRASTIC model and its validation based on the correlation with WQI revealed a low correlation ($WQ_I$vs $D_I$ : 0.221). Since the vulnerability model does not match with the groundwater quality, pollution risk was assessed by combining vulnerabilty and hazard (i.e, water quality). The risk map illustrated three levels ranging from low to high risk. This map should be helpful in decision making and groundwater management through avoiding high risk areas.

Opis:
This work performed by considering two complementary approaches for investigating the Karst system of Ras El Ma source: (1) The structural approach based on field studies, (2) The functional approach requiring inputs data (precipitations) as well as output data at the exit of the karstic system. The choice of the Ras El Ma source is justified by the fact that it constitutes the main outlet of the Liassic aquifer at the Southwest of Taza town. The structural approach highlighted that the impact of South Rifan and North Middle Atlas faults, oriented mainly NE-SW to ENE-WSW and NW-SE, tectonically linked to the Hercynian and late-Hercynian phases; these faults compartmentalized the karst into panels. The functioning of this karst system is based on the coupling of inputs and outputs, the analysis of interannual hydrograph, flood hydrographs, the recession curves and the analysis of hydrogeochemical results. Respectively, the obtained results are presented as follows: A close relationship between flow rates and precipitation, interannual hydrographs marked by a contrasting variation in flow rates and a periodicity that occurs between low water and high-water years. Concerning flood hydrographs, there are two types, a unit modal hydrographs type which generally occurs following time concentrated rainfall and a second multi modal hydrographs type which follows the repetitive rainfall in the basin. The study of recession curves reveals a clear complexity of the systems supplying the source. However, due to the low drying-off coefficients (7.66∙10-4), the aquifer seems to have a poorly developed drainage network in a flooded area. According to the Mangin method [1975], this karstic system is classified in the category of poor or complex karst systems taking into accounts two parameters (i) and (K), which characterize the functioning of the infiltration zone and the volume of flooded karst, respectively. The physicochemical parameters study highlighted the nature of drained rock by the sources. The correlation between conductivity and different chemical elements shows that bicarbonates and calcium are responsible for the mineralization of the waters of this source. It can be concluded that the low values of mineralization occur during the winter and spring floods. The spring regains its normal mineralization during the summer period.

Opis:
During the research, 71 groundwater samples were collected over a 300 km2 area of Tirana-Fushe Kuqe alluvial aquifer extension (central-western Albania) and subsequently analyzed for 11 parameters (pH, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, TH and TDS). Both geochemical conventional (Piper and Chadha diagrams) methods of groundwater classification and multivariate statistical (principal components analysis – PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis – HCA) methods were applied to the dataset to evidence the geochemical processes controlling groundwater geochemistry evaluation through the aquifer. The conventional geochemical methods revealed four (G1–G4) hydrochemical groups where the dominant group is G2 the samples of which are from unconfined to semiconfined recharge zone and the majority of them have Ca-Mg-HCO3 groundwater. Group G3 includes the samples from the confined coastal aquifer having Na-Cl groundwater. Group G1 includes three groundwater samples of Ca-Mg-SO4 from the central part of the aquifer, while group G4, the samples of which are spatially located between G3 and G2 zones, has Na-HCO3 groundwater. The first four components of the PCA account for 85.35% of the total variance. Component PC1 is characterized by very high positive loadings of TH, Ca2+, and Mg2+, suggesting the importance of dissolution processes in the aquifer recharge zone. Component PC2 is characterized by very high positive loadings in Na+, K+, and Cl-and moderate to high loadings of TDS, revealing the involvement of seawater intrusion and diffusion from clay layers. On the basis of their variable loadings, the first two components are defined as the “hardness” and “salinity”, respectively. The HCA produced four geochemically distinct clusters, C1–C4. The samples of cluster C1 are from the coastal confined aquifer and their groundwater belongs to the Na-Cl type. The samples from cluster C2 are located in the south and east recharge areas and most of them have Ca–Mg–HCO3 groundwater, while the samples from cluster C3, which are located in the northeastern recharge zone, have Mg-Ca–HCO3 groundwater. Finally, cluster C4 includes two groundwater subgroups having Na-Cl-HCO3 and Na-Mg-Cl-HCO3 groundwater in the vicinity of cluster C1 as well as Na-HCO3-Cl and Na-Mg-HCO3-Cl groundwater next to cluster C2 and C3.

According to UN experts, by 2030, about half of the world’s population will suffer from a shortage of fresh water, which may cause future hostilities and conflicts. In this regard, extraction of such a valuable mineral as groundwater must be rationally managed. However, practice has shown that managing and protecting the groundwater resources is a very challenging task. As part of the analysis pertaining to the problem of legal regulation of groundwater extraction from transboundary aquifers and complexes, it is proposed to consider this aspect on the example of Russia. The problems of regulation of rational use and protection of fresh water in the bilateral agreements of the Russian Federation were identified; a methodology for managing groundwater extraction in the territory of a transboundary aquifer was developed, dimensions, parameters and factors affecting the formation of a transboundary zone were determined (using the example of research and analysis of water intake activities in the border territories of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Estonia).
