Opis:
This study evaluated the biogas production potential of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) by batch anaerobic digestion under in-vitro conditions. Twenty-one litre-plastic jars were used to conduct 4 replications over 75 days. The results showed that solution temperature, pH and Eh were suitable for biogas production. More than 50% of the obtained CH4 was formed within 17–42 days after incubation. The maximum daily CH4 production was 0.052 L/gVS, whilst the daily H2S concentration was low, with a maximum value of 28 ppm within 14–21 d after incubation. Moreover, the peak of daily biogas production was seen at day 16 with production of 0.12 L/gVS. The results highlight that water lettuce biomass can be potentially used to produce high quality biogas in anaerobic incubation.

Opis:
Sawdust, as an agricultural waste which is highly efficient, readily available, and relatively inexpensive, has the potential to be an applicable alternative adsorbent for the total organic carbon (TOC) removal from synthetic domestic wastewater. This study aims firstly to investigate the feasibility of sawdust as a new adsorbent and understand its adsorption mechanism for TOC. The impact of particle size, pH, contact time, and temperature has been evaluated as the controlling factors on the adsorption process. The results presented that the removal efficiency rose with the decrease of particle size, pH, and temperature, as well as the increase of the contact time. The maximum adsorption was obtained at particle size of 0.05 mm, pH of 1, contact time of 1.5 h, and temperature of 15°C, respectively. The second aim of this study is to utilize the sawdust that is used in the adsorption process as biomass in batch anaerobic digestion (AD) to produce methane. Spent sawdust was characterized by the methane production which was 5.9 times greater than in the case of raw sawdust. Four operating parameters were checked, Carbon/Nitrogen ratio (C/N), inoculation, particle size, and total solid (TS) content. The batch results indicated that the optimum parameters were: 20%, 30%, 2 mm, and 15%, respectively.

Digestate from a biogas plant can be a valuable organic and mineral fertilizer. Quantitative proportions of cosubstrates used in three agricultural biogas plants in Poland were analyzed. The composition of digestates was examined and large differences in the content of macronutrients were found, especially N and K. On the basis of the factors used to calculate emissions from the production and use of artificial fertilizers, the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction resulting from replacing mineral fertilizers with digestate was calculated. In terms of 1 Mg of fresh digestate, this reduction may not seem large, as it amounts to 27.9–61.6 kg of CO2 eq, but it should be taken into account that digestate contains little dry matter. The annual amount of digestate used on an area of 1 ha allows avoiding GHG emissions of 25.8–44.5 Mg CO2 eq.

This study examined the effectiveness of thermophilic co-digestion of sewage sludge and milled/non-milled brewery spent grain. The experiments were performed in batch-mode to evaluate both the biogas potential and the biogas production rate. Five runs were carried out, one of them concerned the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge (as control), whereas the others referred to the co-digestion of sewage sludge with addition of milled and nonmilled brewery spent grain at doses of 5 and 10 g. The runs were conducted under thermophilic conditions (temperature 55±1°C) and lasted for 21 days. The effectiveness of the process was assessed on the basis of the volatile solids removal, biogas potential and the rate of biogas production. The physiochemical composition of reactor feed and digestate were characterized. The addition of the brewery spent grain resulted in increase of the biogas potential, but a decrease in the volatile solids removal. In the case of biogas production rate, the highest value was recorded in the run with the addition of 10 g of milled and non-milled brewery spent grain (0.69 Ndm3dm-3d-1). There was no observed influence of milling on the thermophilic co-digestion effectiveness since the parameters specified revealed comparable values.

Since anaerobic digestion (AD) is the preferred procedure for sludge treatment and disposal, it is constrained by the hydrolysis and acidogenesis stages. Nanomaterials have an impact on the AD process due to their unique properties (large specific surface areas, solubility, adsorption reduction of heavy metals, degradation of organic matter, reduction of hydrogen supplied and catalytic nature) which make them advantageous in many applications due to their effectiveness in improving the AD efficiency. Magnetic Nanoparticles (MNPs) were used in the present study to improve the biogas production. The experiments were divided into two stages to evaluate the effect of adding MNPs to two types of sewage sludge (SS): attached growth process (AG) and activated sludge (AS). The first stage consists of 15 tests divided into three experiments (A, B, and C). Doses of MNPs (20, 50, 100, 200) mg/l were added to all digesters in the same experiment except for one digester (the control). Experiments A, B and C achieved the highest biogas production when 100 mg/l of MNPs was added. They were 1.9, 1.93 and 2.07 times higher than the control for A, B and C respectively. The second stage consists of 12 tests with a pretreatment for some of SS. It was divided into two experiments (D, E), where the chemical pretreatment was applied to experiment D and the thermal pretreatment was applied to experiment E except for the control. For digester D4, which had 100 mg/l of MNPs after a chemical pretreatment at pH = 12, the biogas production increased by 2.2 times higher than the control (D0) and 1.5 times higher than the untreated sludge with the addition of 100 mg/l MNPs (DN). Thermal pretreatment at 100 °C with addition of 100 mg/l MNPs (E4) achieved a biogas yield 2 times higher than the control (E0), and 1.39 times higher than untreated sludge with 100 mg/l MNPs (EN). The previous results indicate that the integration of magnetite can serve as the conductive materials, promoting inherent indirect electron transfer (IET) and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between methanogens and fermentative bacteria which lead to a more energy-efficient route for interspecies electron transfer and methane productivity. This study demonstrated the positive effect of magnetite on organic biodegradation, process stability and methane productivity.

The influence of the alkaline pretreatment of wheat straw with use 0.05M solution of NaOH by 22 hours at 25 °C temperature on the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion under mesophilic condition was the subject of this study. The water soaked straw was used as a control. The results showed that alkaline pretreatment improved the solubility of the straw biomass, increasing dissolved COD and concentration of VFA in the feedstock of 10% and 21%, respectively, compared to the water soaked samples. Consequently, the cumulative biogas yield was enhanced by 21.5%, reaching 412.1 mL gVS-1 for the pretreated biomass. The digestates were similar in terms of TS and VS, but it significantly differed in terms of phenols concentration, the content of which was considerably higher both in the feedstock as also as in digestate containing alkaline pretreated straw. Initial concentration of phenols in the feedstock of 27 mg L-1 did not block the anaerobic digestion, although its inhibiting effect is forecasted. It was concluded that soaking the straw at low loading of NaOH (4% of raw mass (w/w)) under ambient conditions can efficiently improve its usability for biogas production.

Opis:
The objective of the present work was to determine the effect of pretreatment by extrusion on the biogas and biomethane yield of lignocellulosic substrates such as maize silage and maize straw silage. The biogas yields of the substrates before and after treatment were compared. Moreover, energy efficiency of pretreatment by extrusion was analyzed in order to assess the applicability of the process in an agricultural biogas plant. Extrusion tests were carried out in a short single-screw extruder KZM-2 in which the length-to-diameter ratio of the screw was 6:1 and rotational speed was 200 rpm. The biogas yield tests of the plant substrates after extrusion were carried out in a laboratory scale, using 15 biofermenters operated in a periodic manner, at a constant temperature of 39°C (mesophilic digestion) and controlled pH conditions. The gas-emission analysis was performed using a certified gas analyzer from Geotech GA5000. Pretreatment by extrusion was observed to improve the quantity of methane generated: in terms of fresh matter for maize silage subjected to extrusion, the methane yield was 16.48% higher than that of the non-extruded silage. On the other hand, maize straw silage after extrusion gave 35.30% more methane than did the same, non-extruded, material. Differences in yields relative to dry organic matter are also described in this paper. Taking into account the amount of energy that is spent on pretreatment and the generated amount of methane, the energy balance for the process gives an idea of the economics of the operation. For maize silage, energy efficiency was lower by 13.21% (-553.2 kWh/Mg), in contrast to maize straw silage, where the increase in energy was 33.49% (678.4 kWh/Mg). The obtained results indicate that more studies on the pretreatment and digestion of maize silage are required in order to improve the efficiency of its use for making biogas. To fully utilize its potential, it is necessary to know thoroughly the effect of the extrusion process and of biogas production on energy efficiency at different conditions.

Opis:
Rising efficiency of wastewater purification systems causes an increase in the amounts of sewage sludge. Its land application is economically attractive because of low cost and high efficiency. Using sewage sludge in agriculture is one of the most preferred ways of its disposal. Only stabilized sludge and containing permissible concentrations of heavy metals can be used for this purpose. The heavy metals introduction into the environment may cause a potential problem for public health, especially when they percolate from soil to plants or groundwater. Therefore, the concentrations of heavy metals in sludge intended for agriculture are regulated. Determination of total content of heavy metals in digested sludge is not sufficient for the evaluation of a potential risk to the environment. The mobility and toxicity of heavy metals depend strongly on their specific chemical forms. The concentrations of particular heavy metal fractions are the most important parameters, which should be examined in order to estimate the influence of sludge on the environment. The aim of an article was to evaluate the influence of anaerobic digestion on the concentration and variability of chemical forms of selected heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the sewage sludge coming from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Pulawy (Poland). The content of particular forms of heavy metals in raw and digested sewage sludge was determined by means of the BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) method. The BCR method enables separating four fractions of heavy metals: exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable and residual. The results obtained after analyzing raw sludge showed that the majority of the analyzed heavy metals were predominantly associated with the oxidizable and residual fractions. Only in the case of Zn, the reducible form constituted a greater part. In the case of digested sludge, all studied heavy metals exhibited the most dominant oxidizable and residual fractions; however, the percentages of particular fractions were different than in raw sludge. It was noticed that all heavy metals concentrations were higher in digested sludge in comparison to sludge before anaerobic digestion. The content of heavy metals in the analyzed materials did not exceed the admissible Polish levels for the sludge intended for the agricultural use.

This study was aimed at studying the potential of biogas (methane) production from vinasse wastewater in real full-scale application using a two-stage sequencing Up-flow High Rate Anaerobic Reactor (UHRAR), with effluent recirculation and substrate modification. A batch experiment was initially conducted prior to the full-scale application experiment. The batch experiment was done with experimental condition variable: undiluted sample (pH 6) and diluted samples (pH: 5; 6 and 7), while pH and methane production were observed for 50 days. Full-scale application was carried out in two-stage UHRAR reactors with volume 60 m3, HRT 40 d and OLR 60.1–104 kg COD/m3•d. The observation lasted for 32 d. The result from the batch experiment showed that the diluted samples achieved higher COD degradation and methane generation than the undiluted sample. The optimum condition occurred at pH 7, with theoretical methane yield of 7.5–10.64 L CH4 per kg COD. In turn, in full scale application, at day 32, COD removal was 71% (69.1 kg COD/d removed), with methane production was 36.72 m3 CH4/d. Methane production per COD removed was 0.53 m3 CH4/kg COD•d. Substrate modification and effluent recirculation could improve the substrate biodegradability, maintain microbial diversity and enrich nutrients in the reactor.

In the present study, the process performance of anaerobic co-digestion of municipal sewage sludge and orange peel (OP) was evaluated. The experiment was conducted in batch mode under thermophilic conditions (55 °C). It involved adding 1.5 and 3.0 g of OP to reactors R2 and R3, respectively. In R1 (control reactor), the mono-digestion of sewage sludge was conducted. The obtained results indicated that the application of OP led to deterioration of process efficiency. Decreased methane and biogas productions were noticed at both doses of OP. The average values of methane production were 518.9, 416.8 and 458.6 mLCH4·g-1 VS in R1, R2 and R3, respectively. The declining tendency on the biogas and methane rates was also observed. The application of OP resulted in degradation of the stability parameters. The negative effect of OP application was related with the presence of inhibitors such as ammonia nitrogen, volatile fatty acids, limonene and phenol, importantly theirs increased contents were observed in R2 and R3. Moreover, the thermophilic conditions are not recommended for the anaerobic co-digestion of those substrates, because they might accelerate the inhibition phenomenon.

Water hyacinth (WH) biomass is one of the popular materials in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, a potential substrate for biogas production. The effectiveness of utilizing WH for producing biogas under anaerobic digestion was demonstrated in the previous studies, but the research was focused on the loading rate of about 1.0% volatile solid (VS). Therefore, in the present study, a semi-continuous anaerobic digestion experiment was conducted with the five levels of VS, including 1.0%VS, 1.5%VS, 2.0%VS, 2.5%VS, and 3.0%VS, to examine how loaded VS can affect biogas production. Each treatment was designed with three replications over 60 days. The measured parameters included pH, temperature (Temp; °C), redox potential (Eh; mV), daily produced biogas volume (L), cumulative biogas volume (L), and methane (CH4) concentration (%) during the 60 days of the experiment. The obtained results showed that pH, tempt, and Eh parameters did not negatively affect biogas production. However, the volume of daily biogas in the treatment of 3.0%VS was higher than in other treatments. In addition, the cumulative biogas volume in the treatment of 3.0%VS was the highest and significantly different between all reactors (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the treatment of 1.0%VS was known with the lowest values. The study explored that the volume of biogas could be increased when the organic loading rate VS is increased.

The interest in biogas production in Poland is growing rapidly. This is mostly due to the fact that there is a need for handling and managing the increasing quantities of diverse bio-waste generated by industry and agriculture. Therefore, good laboratory practices and correct preparation of batch tests are very important for planning of a full-scale biogas plant. The aim of the paper was to determine the effect of mixing in the laboratory batch reactors on the biogas yield of maize straw under thermophilic conditions. The scope of this work included: (1) the analysis of basic physical and chemical parameters and (2) laboratory determination of biogas and methane yield from anaerobic digestion of maize straw with different frequencies of mixing. The obtained biogas and methane yield from the thermophilic fermentation of maize straw mixed every day was 381.89 m3·Mg-1 FM and 184.97 m3·Mg-1 FM, respectively. The results of this study confirmed the effect of no mixing inside reactors. In the batch test a decrease in biogas and methane yields was observed, by approx. 60 m3·Mg-1 and approx. 28 m3·Mg-1, respectively.
