The aim of the study was to demonstrate produced biogas dependence on batch composition as agricultural waste. Research was conducted in biogas power plant Biogas Adler, which was the first agricultural biogas plant built in Podlaskie province. The analysis showed in analyzed biogas production of biogas from waste from agricultural activity, is a good way of their utilization, while producing heat and electricity. Among the three analyzed substrates the highest efficiency of biogas production is characterized by corn silage and manure. Potato pulp significantly reduces the efficiency of biogas production. Independently of the composition and quality of substrates, to produce 1 MWh of the biogas plant consumes approx. 457 m3 of biogas.

Opis:
Mango (Mangifera indica L.) peel, a food processing waste, is rich in polyphenols and polysaccharides, two substances that have previously been linked in the selective recovery of gold from metals solution. This study was carried out to develop biosorbents from green and ripe mango peel for the retrieval of gold from electronic waste (e-waste). Biosorbents were produced by cross-linking the components of mango peel through acid treatment. The gold from the mixture of metals leached from the e-waste was recovered using the cross-linked and untreated mango peel. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was employed to confirm cross-linking and to monitor the adsorption of gold. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to characterize the surface of the biosorbents. Incineration was conducted to separate gold from the biosorbent. The results of the FTIR analysis revealed an increase in the intensity of the peak for C=O and the appearance of the signal for C-O-C, suggesting cross-linking. The FTIR spectra of the untreated and cross-linked biosorbents also showed more intense peak for C=O, which may be due to the oxidation of OH groups as gold ions are reduced. The SEM revealed increase in the roughness of the surface of the biosorbents, presumably as the result of gold deposition. Although all biosorbents were able to capture gold from the leachate, the cross-linked green mango peel appeared to be the most effective.

Opis:
Curly kale has a high nutritional content that benefits the human body’s health. This plant appeals to many individuals. Using agricultural waste processed by fermentation to produce liquid organic fertilizer is an effective option for safe products and can reduce the hydroponic cultivation cost of curly kale. This study aimed to investigate liquid organic fertilizer application technology from various agricultural wastes, vinasse, leucanea leaves, and banana peels. These waste materials are additional hydroponic nutrients close to the hydroponic nutrients (AB Mix) that can increase the yield and quality of curly kale plants. Using a randomized block design, this study involved conducting ten treatments repeated three times from April to June 2022 at the screen house of Villa Puncak Tidar, Malang. The study found that the nutritional composition of AB Mix 75% + (25% LOF Vinasse + Banana Peels + Leucaena leaves) had results close to the shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, and shoot root ratio of the 100% AB Mix treatment. The total chlorophyll content approaching the 100% AB Mix treatment results was the AB Mix 75% + (25% LOF Vinasse + Banana Peels) treatment. The AB Mix 50% + (50% LOF Vinasse + Banana Peels) treatment produced the highest levels of antioxidants and showed an increase of 15.79%, compared to the 100% AB Mix treatment of 67.63%.

Opis:
The fertilizer management is one of the greatest challenges of agriculture in the 21st century. The growing demand for food, along with the similar amount of arable land, creates the necessity of increasing the crop yields in a given area. Due to the fact that the production and use of mineral fertilizers often influence the environment in a negative way, for many years more attention has been paid to natural and organic fertilizers. Their advantage is the transfer of not only organic matter but also nutrients to the soil. In connection with the structural changes in agriculture, the production of natural fertilizers, especially manure decreases, but at the same time, the production of other organic fertilizers, e.g. composts or biochar increases. The aim of the work was to present the possibility of using biochar in the production of organic fertilizers. Moreover, the project concept for obtaining an organic fertilizer containing biochar and its application in the processes of biological transformation of waste was presented.

Opis:
There is a growing interest in natural antioxidants due to their potential in improving the quality of food and cosmetic products and their health-promoting properties. Distilled spirits contain high amount of ethanol and may be an alternative to the food-grade solvents, while agricultural by-products contain phenolic substances that may have antioxidant properties. This study was therefore conducted to find out if gin, vodka, and tequila flavored spirit, alcoholic beverages with about 40% ethanol, can extract the phenolic compounds from agricultural by-products, and to determine if the extracts possess the antioxidant activity. Peels of ripe banana (Musa acuminata), ripe mango (Mangifera indica), calamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa), squash (Cucurbita maxima), ripe pineapple (Ananas comosus), purple yam (Dioscorea alata), and sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) were collected, dried, and ground. The phenolic substances in the plant materials were extracted with alcoholic beverages or 40% ethanol. The total phenolic content (TPC) of the extracts was determined by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and gallic acid as reference compound. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated through the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) served as positive control in the DPPH assay. Non-linear regression was applied to the DPPH assay data to estimate the values of median effective concentration (EC50). All three alcoholic beverages were able to extract the phenolic materials from the plant samples. However, the ability of vodka and gin to extract the phenolic substances was either statistically comparable or better than 40% ethanol. The results of the DPPH scavenging assay showed that the M. indica peel had the strongest activity, while C. microcarpa had the weakest scavenging activity. At 1000-ppm level, the antioxidant activity of the M. indica peel was comparable with that of BHA, regardless of the solvent used for extraction. Therefore, the M. indica peel can be a source of natural antioxidants and potential substitute to synthetic antioxidants. Both gin and vodka can be used as a substitute for food-compatible solvents.

Opis:
Agricultural biogas plants are an important source of energy, where the substrates from agricultural crops can be used. However, these plants need a daily input of biomass in the quantities up to several dozen tons. A few years ago, the most important substrate used for biogas production was maize silage. However, currently, there is a trend to limit the use of the afore-mentioned substrate. This is mainly due to the high cost of the substrate and the conflict over the rational use of valuable soils for biomass production for energy purposes. In the paper, the author undertook the attempts to discuss the possibility of limiting the use of raw vegetable materials for energy production, replacing them with agri-food production waste.

Opis:
The digestate from an agricultural biogas plant is most commonly used as a fertilizer. However, many studies are being performed to develop other ways of managing this substrate. The aim of this study was to determine the biogas and methane efficiency for digestate as well as the solid and liquid fractions from separation of digestate. The material for the research came from a real scale agricultural biogas plant. The separation of the digestate into two fractions was carried out using a mechanical press. The studies on the methane fermentation process were carried out under mesophilic conditions (37–39°C) in the Institute of Biosystems Engineering at the Poznań University of Life Sciences. It was found that the biogas and methane efficiency for the raw digestate and liquid fraction obtained from its separation is very low. For raw digestate it was 2.9 m3 of biogas from 1 Mg fresh matter (FM), including 1.58 m3 methane. For liquid fraction after separation, the biogas efficiency amounted to 1.52 m3 from 1 Mg, including 0.78 m3 of methane. In turn, for the solid fraction, the biogas efficiency was 102.93 m3∙Mg-1, including 54.99 m3∙Mg-1 of methane. The research results indicate that the possibility of using the digestate solid fraction for energy production (e.g. secondary methane fermentation) or the production of solid biofuels.
