Opis:
The aim of the study was to analyze the content of Ni in fractions of 1.0–0.2 mm, 0.2–0.1 mm, 0.1–0.063 mm, 0.063–0.02 mm, and <0.02 mm of river bottom sediments and plants (root, stem, leaf) of broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia), yellow water lilies (Nuphar lutea), and cowbane (Cicuta virosa). Nickel content in bottom sediment was slightly higher than the geochemical background. The largest amounts of Ni were associated with the finest fraction, while the smallest with the thickest fraction. The highest content of this element was recorded at the point Ełk Barany, which was connected with developing industry in the city of Ełk. All of the tested plants showed greater Ni contents than the amount naturally occurring in plants. In most cases, most of Ni was associated with plant roots, and the least with leaves. It has been proven that aquatic plants can be good indicators of the aquatic environment status.

Opis:
Nickel has been listed as a priory control pollutant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Compared with other methods, the combination of vegetation and the addition of mineral sorbents to heavy metal-contaminated soils can be readily applied on a large scale because of the simplicity of technology and low cost. Halloysite and zeolite, among others, can be used for this purpose. A greenhouse study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using natural zeolite, as well as raw and modified halloysite for the remediation of simulated Ni-contaminated soil. The soil was spiked with five doses of nickel, i.e. 0 (control), 80, 160, 240 and 320 mg·Ni kg-1·soil. The average accumulation of heavy metals in nickel-contaminated soil was found to follow the decreasing order of Ni>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb. The highest reduction of Pb content was observed in soil samples taken from pots containing 80 and 160 mg·kg-1 of Ni along with the addition of modified halloysite. The strongest effects were caused by natural zeolite, which significantly reduced the average content of chromium. Contamination at 320 mg Ni·kg-1

Opis:
Metal pollution attracts growing interest mainly due to their toxic effects on the entire natural environment. It is therefore necessary to monitor, not to exceed acceptable standards of elements in ecosystems. Heavy metals in soils are derived from natural and anthropogenic sources. The purpose of this article is to present the contents of copper and nickel in agricultural soils within the Vistula river catchment based on research carried out by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in the period since 1995 to 2010. The assessment of a degree of soil contamination by these elements according to standards has been also performed. It has been proven that about 91% of agricultural soils in Vistula river catchment shows natural (0°), while approximately 9% higher (Io) copper concentrations. It was found that in the total agricultural area of the Vistula river catchment, soils not contaminated with nickel (0°), with elevated (Io), and weakly contaminated soils (IIo) are respectively 85%, 11%, 4% of the analyzed soils area. There was a significant relationship between the content of copper and nickel in soils and such features as organic matter and pH. Analysis of results confirmed that the highly developed industrial activity affects the increased amount of pollutants in soils; the greatest accumulation occurred in soils of the upper Vistula river catchment, which is caused primarily by interaction of the Upper Silesian Industrial District.

Opis:
Aloe vera leaves (AVL), a by-product of agricultural waste, have been applied as a biosorbent for reducing Ni(II) ions in aqueous solutions. The biosorption capability of AVL powder was enhanced through chemical treatment with 0.10 M citric acid solution. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), pH of point-zero-charge (pHPZC), and pHslurry analyses were used to study the surface, and chemical properties of citric acid-treated Aloe vera leaf powder (CAAVLP). The setting for experiments such as pH solution, CAAVLP dose, initial concentration, and biosorption time was investigated. Maximum Ni(II) ion biosorption capability was determined to be 48.65 mg/g based on the Langmuir model at pH 6, a CAAVLP dose of 0.02 g, initial Ni(II) concentrations of 5 to 50 mg/L and biosorption time of 120 min. The data for the isotherm and kinetics were well matched with the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively, with high regression correlation (R2) and low chi-square (χ2) values. The presence of more-COOH groups after treating AVL with citric acid resulted in more Ni(II) ions being able to be removed.

Opis:
Pollution of the soil by different types of heavy metals is one of the most important problems of the environment. The present study used an electro-kinetic remediation, which is one of the important advanced techniques for the removal nickel from contaminated sandy soil. The study includes many experiments with different pH electrode purging solutions (distilled water at pH of 3, 5 and 7). Anionic surfactant (sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, AOT) was used for washing soil as surfactant-enhanced remediation. Bio remedies banana peels (BP) were utilized as eco-friendly, low cost and adsorbent materials to avoid reverse osmosis that effects on the removal process. The results indicated that the greatest removal efficiency (65.2%) was achieved at the pH of purging solution (3) in comparison with pH of (5 and 7). This means that when the pH of the purging solution decreases, the removal efficiency increases. Using AOT as a soil-washing solution increased nickel dissolution and desorption from surface of the soil. Then, the AOT micelles containing nickel easily migrated to the cathode chamber by flow of the electro osmotic; thus, the removal efficiency increased (74.8%). In conclusion, the use of AOT is effective in enhancing nickel removal through the electro kinetic remediation. Bio remedies using banana peels is considered as a successful adsorbent material to avoid the reverse osmosis flow, this will give a new thought for the application these products as adsorption medium.

In the samples of fresh dehydrated sewage sludges from municipal treatment plants in Grajewo, Bielsk Podlaski, Sokółka, Dąbrowa Białostocka, Knyszyn, Mońki, Augustów, Suwałki, Sejny and Suchowola the following determinations were made: pH, pseudo-total content of Zn, Ni and Cu, organic matter and dry mass. The contents of the above-mentioned elements in fractions were evaluated using modified BCR method (four fractions: F1-acid soluble and exchangeable, F2-reducible, F3-oxidizable, F4-residual). The zinc content (mean values) in particular fractions can be arranged quantitatively in a sequence: F3 (60.8%) > F2 (20.0%) > F4 (19.9%) > F1 (3.9%), in the case of nickel: F3 ( 48.6%) > F2 (25.2%) > F4 (25.1%) > F1 (5.6%) and in the case of copper: F4 (66.3%) > F3 (35.3%) > F1 (4.2%) > F2 (3.0%). Cumulative content of zinc in mobile fractions (F1+F2+F3) ranged from 76.0 to 93.3%; for nickel from 56.3 to 89.6% and for copper from 28.8 to 53.3% of pseudo-total content.

The catalytic conversion of a model tar compound, namely: naphthalene contained in a simulated producer gas from wood gasification process was investigated. The sol-gel approach was used to create a mesoporous Cepromoted Ni/alumina catalyst with high surface area. A surface area of 333 m2g was achieved by calcination of the mesoporous catalyst (17 wt% Ni and 2.8 wt% Ce) under air conditions at 1123 K. The catalysts were characterized using the N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, and SEM techniques, and their promotion effect on producer gas reforming and tar removal was studied under dry, steam, and partial oxidation conditions. The Ni-based catalysts effectively converted naphthalene and increased the proportion of H2 and CO in the reformed gas. Incorporating Ce into the catalyst increased the proportion of H2 and CO in the reformed gas, while lowering the amount of CH4 and CO2. In the absence of oxygen, catalytic reforming of the producer gas resulted in 79.6% naphthalene conversion, whereas catalytic partial oxidation conditions resulted in 99.1% naphthalene conversion.

The publication presents the results of the research on the nickel content in potato tubers and green mass of fodder sunflower grown on a constant fertilization field on lessive soil developed from the loess located at the Rzeszów Foothills. The experiment established by randomized block design used a four-year crop rotation, which included potatoes, spring barley, fodder sunflower, and winter wheat. Mineral NPK fertilization was used on a background of constant Mg as well as Ca and Mg fertilization (liming). The nickel content in crops was determined by means of FAAS technique (Hitachi, Z 2000) after samples digestion in a mixture of HNO3:HClO4:H2SO4 at 20:5:1 ratio. A decrease of the nickel concentration in potato tubers and in green matter of fodder sunflower due to liming was observed. Mineral nutrition (regardless of liming) did not considerably affect the element content in potato tubers, yet it was significant for the metal content in green mass of sunflower. It was shown that the interaction of liming treatment with mineral fertilization contributed to the lowering of nickel concentration in test crops, especially in the green matter of the fodder sunflower (most of limed fertilization objects), while in potato tubers – to a lesser extent.

Opis:
The nickel post-mining soil with an open-pit mining system has poor soil chemical and physical properties. Thus, it requires appropriate site-specific management so that it can be optimized as a plant cultivation area. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of compost from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and mycorrhizal vesicular-arbuscular (MVA) in improving soil fertility of nickel post-mining soil. This study was conducted using a randomized block trial design with 2 factors. The first factor is compost with 3 treatments, consisting of 5 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K1), 7.5 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K2), 10 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K3) and the second factor was mycorrhiza (M) in the fine-crushed brick carrier media with as many as 3 treatments consisting of 2 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M1), 4 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M2), 6 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M3). A total of 9 treatment combinations were repeated 3 times, arranged in experimental pots at the Experimental Farm of Hasanuddin University, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The results showed that the compost and MVA treatments had a significant effect on increasing the average values of cation exchange capacity, organic carbon, available P2O5, calcium and magnesium exchangeable,as well as decreasing exchangeable aluminum and iron. The highest soil properties values were found in the combination of compost 10 $t•ha^{-1}$ (K3) and MVA 6 $t•ha^{-1}$ (M3). The application of compost from OPEFB combined with MVA significantly improved soil fertility, which was indicated by improving soil chemical and biological properties. The application of MVA at various doses had a significant effect on the dry weight, root length of Calopogonium mucunoides and increase the number of MVA spores in the soil.

In soil sampled after a two-year pot experiment, the activity of urease and dehydrogenase and content of nitrogen have been determined. The experiment included three factors: 1. the amount of nickel added to the soil (0, 75, 150 and 225 mg kg-1 of soil), 2. liming (0 and Ca according to 1 Hh hydrolytic acidity), 3. organic materials (straw of rye and brown coal). Test plant was cocksfoot, which four cuts were collected in each growing season. It was found that nickel added to the soli in dose of 75 mg kg -1 activates enzymes studied, whereas higher doses cause them explicit deactivation. Both liming and waste organic materials limited the negative effect of higher doses of nickel on the activity of dehydrogenase and urease. Simultaneously, both straw and brown coal caused a slight increase in the amount of nitrogen in the soil.

In each experimental year, orchard grass was the test plant and four swaths were harvested. The activities of acidic and alkaline phosphatase, pH and the content of carbon in organic compounds were determined in the soil samples collected after each grass swath and in each experimental year. It was found that Ni at 75 mg kg-1 soil activated the enzymes under study, whereas higher doses caused their statistically-confirmed inactivation. The lowest activity of the investigated enzymes was detected in soil supplemented with 225 Ni kg-1 soil. Liming caused an increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase and a reduction in the activity of acidic phosphatase. Straw and brown coal induced a substantial increase in the activity of both enzymes in the tested soil samples. Both liming and straw and carbon eliminated the negative effect of higher nickel doses on the activity of the enzymes under study.

Organic kitchen wastes were vermicomposted in ecological boxes, using Eisenia fetida earthworms. The aim of the studies was the assessment of the effect of Nomolt 150SC on the earthworm population. An insecticide Nomolt 150SC (reducing occurrence of Diptera Sciaridae, being competitive for earthworms and burdensome to the person making us e of the ecological boxes) was applied at the dose recommended by the producers as "environmentally safe". It was demonstrated, that acylourea preparation reduced the number of Diptera larvas, but it did not have a neutral effect on earthworm reproduction - it significantly reduced both the number and biomass of the cocoons laid by them and the number of the young specimens.

Opis:
W doświadczeniu wazonowym badano wpływ wapnowania i dodatku do gleby odpadowych materiałów organicznych na zawartość wapnia i magnezu w kupkówce pospolitej (Dactylis glomerata L.), uprawianej na glebie w różnym stopniu zanieczyszczonej niklem. Analizowano rośliny czterech pokosów trawy, w trzecim roku badań. W doświadczeniu uwzględniono czynniki: 1 – zanieczyszczenie gleb niklem (0, 75, 150 i 225 mg Ni·kg-1 gleby); 2 – wapnowanie (0 Ca i Ca wg 1 Hh gleby); 3 – odpadowe materiały organiczne (bez dodatku odpadowych materiałów organicznych, węgiel brunatny i słoma żytnia).
The effect of liming and the addition to soil of waste organic materials on the contents of calcium and magnesium in cock’s-foot (Dactylis glomerata L.) cultivated on soil contaminated to various degrees with nickel was studied in a pot culture experiment. Plants from four cuts of grass were analysed in the third year of the study. The following factors were taken into account: 1 – contamination of soils with nickel (0, 75, 150 and 225 mg N·kg-1 of soil); 2 – liming (0 Ca and Ca according to Hh of soil); 3 – waste organic materials (no waste organic materials added, brown coal and rye straw). With increasing nickel content in soil, the magnesium content in biomass of the test plant decreased. The applied liming resulted in an increase in the average calcium content and a decrease in the magnesium content in cock’s-foot. No significant effect of introducing straw to soil on the contents of calcium and magnesium in biomass of the grass was found, while the effect of brown coal was visible both for calcium and for magnesium (in the plants harvested from the objects to which brown coal was applied, the contents of both macroelements were, on average, lower than in the plants harvested from the control objects).
