Opis:
The methods of decontamination of radionuclides from soils are considered. The literature focuses on fixing radionuclides in soils and creating geochemical barriers that it is prevent the spread of pollution. The main disadvantage of these methods is excluding the possibility of building a territory. It is needed to clean up the area to the sanitary and hygienic requirements for further use and then it is desirable to fix the residual activity. The conducted analysis of forms of radionuclides fixation in soils and mechanics of this fixation, therewith revealed that Cs-137 fixed more strongly on mineral components of soil, than Sr-90, which is mainly in the acid-soluble and exchangeable form, and, as a consequence, passes into the liquid phase during soil deactivation more easily. Contaminated soil deactivation in the urbanized territory is possible by washing it by ferric chloride solution at a concentration 0.02–0.05 M and with an equimolar addition of an ammonium chloride. Therewith, most efficient methods, which use in-situ conditions, are heap and convection leaching technologies with treatment degree, which is not less than 80%. At the same time, the most efficient methods which use in-situ conditions are heap and the convection leaching. The hardware-technological scheme of a convection leaching is presented. It is worth to note that ammonium salts additions slightly rise coefficient of treatment from Sr-90. Because ammonium salts are inexpensive, their additions allow to obtain significant economic benefits due to decreasing ferric chloride consumption, which is more valuable, and waste water volume reduction.

Opis:
The degradation of tebuconazole in the majority of Polish mineral soils withlow organic carbon content is slow, and its adsorptionis especially low in subsoils. Therefore, the fate of tebuconazole in these soils cannot be predicted based on the results of the adsorption and degradation experiments carried out in typical soils of the European Union. For this reason, the simulations of tebuconazole accumulation in Polish soils and its leaching to groundwater were carried out. The cultivation of winter cereals and winter oilseed rape was simulatedusing FOCUS PELMO in six Arenosol, Luvisol, and Chernozem profiles, representing 59% of Polish arable mineral soils. The simulations indicated that almost all fungicide that reached the soil surface was retained in the topsoil layer of 0–15 cm. The highest concentrations (range of 0.069–0.320 mg/kg) were estimated for the layer 0–5 cm. The results suggested that runoff can be the principal source of tebuconazole in surface water. It was found that the majority of tebuconazole that reached the soils was microbiologically degraded. However, in the years with unfavorable weather conditions for degradation, up to 11% of the tebuconazole that reached the soils remain undegraded. In addition to the accumulation of tebuconazole in the topsoils, the simulations indicated its very slow but constant penetration into the subsoils. The estimated concentrations of tebuconazole in percolate water were low: < 0.02 μg/L at the depth of 25 cm, < 0.002 μg/L at the depth of 75 cm, and trace concentrations at the depth of 1 m in one profile. The obtained results were consistent with the results of the monitoring studies available in literature.

Opis:
The leachability of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Zn) from the coal fly ash samples was studied. The investigations executed using three leachability tests (USEPA, TCLP, ASTM). The effect of different parameters was determined (the diameter of ash grains, the kind of leaching solutions, pH of leaching solutions, the volume ratio of leaching solutions to the mass of ash samples, and the leaching time) on the leachability of the heavy metals from fly ash samples. Moreover, the influence of pH and changes in the redox potential of the leaching solutions as well as the presence of organic compounds that could potentially form complexes with metals and solubility changes of metals. The concentration of the metals studied (Cu, Pb and Zn) in all obtained solutions was determined by FAAS method. On the basis of the research investigations, optimal leachability conditions for Cu, Pb and Zn from fly ash in this study have been determined. We have also found that pH of the leaching solution, and the presence of organic compounds which have a potential capacity of complexion the metals are the important factors in determining the solubility of Cu, Pb and Zn.

Opis:
Numerous solutions are used in the site to treat pollution, including remediation of heavy metals and hazardous wastes by solidification/stabilization (S/S) with cement as a binder. S/S is one of the most commonly methods used for treating inorganic wastes. The objective of this research was using unconfined compressive strength test, and EPA Toxicity Leaching Procedure TCLP method 1313, to test the effectiveness performance, and efficiency of the solidification/stabilization method for treatment of some heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Cr) contaminated sands using ordinary locally produced Portland Cement type A. In this study, three loads of pollution in three mix designs by contaminated sands were used. As a result of the unconfined compression test, it was observed that the value 1–15 MPa with OPC cement content 25% in the solidification/stabilization process was good enough to comply with the limited value set by the (US EPA). In addition, the concentration of zinc ions was 500 kg/mg, 1500 kg/mg, and 3000 kg/mg, which caused an increase in compressive strength in the early period of age, and a decrease at a later age. An increase in the iron ion concentration caused an increase in the compressive strength at a later age, the effective retention percentages were (97, 93.5, 96 and 92) for iron, zinc, manganese and chromium ions, respectively, which exceeded 3000 mg/kg initially. The high effectiveness in holding and retaining metals within the matrix of solidification/stabilization at the particle size above 9.5 mm was found as well. The samples (Mn and Cr) with the low amount of cement in the mix treatment were not able to retain the required TCLP regulatory limits value, and the initial extraction pH 4.9. However, the final pH 9.5 is alkanet and stabilization effects of the cement matrix.

The progress of civilization brings with it the development of advanced technologies and increased demand for electric and electronic equipment. That directly influences the increase of produced e-waste, called Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Due to the fact that deficit and critical metals are running out throughout the World, and due to increased demand for those metals, their alternative source and recovery methods have to be found. As an alternative biotechnological methods can be used. The advantage of biological methods over chemical processes is its selectivity in regard to different metal groups, simplicity of technological process, economic effectivity (lower energy expenditure) and lack of negative impact on environment. The aim of this work was to compare the effectiveness of biological and chemical leaching of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) from circuit boards (PCBs).The experiment was conducted in variants which included factors such as temperature (24°C and 37°C) and speed of mixing. In case of all metals higher effectiveness was achieved in variants conducted in the temperature of 24°C and faster mixing than in temperature of 37°C and slower mixing. In case of cooper and zinc better results of metal removal were achieved in bioleaching variant. In case of nickel faster result of metal removal were achieved in chemical leaching, but at the end of the experiment the effectivity of chemical leaching and biological leaching was similar. The maximum efficiency of cooper, nickel and zinc release was adequately 100%, 90%, 65%.

The paper presents the results of leaching research of selected heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Cr) from industrial waste. The impact of waste fragmentation on the level of heavy metals leaching was analyzed. The decrease of copper and zinc release and the increase of nickel leaching were observed with increasing grain size fraction of waste. Furthermore, release of contaminants in different ratio of liquid to solid (L/S = 10 dm3/kg and 2 dm3/kg) was studied. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were determined in ratio of L/S = 10 dm3/kg. In order to determine the risk of tested waste to the environment, the results were compared with the current law. This allowed the classification of the waste to hazardous waste.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badania wymywalności metali ciężkich: Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb i Cr z żużla hutniczego, przy wykorzystaniu kolumnowego testu wymywania. Do badań systematycznie pobierano eluaty o ustalonym stosunku cieczy do ciała stałego (L/S = 0,1; 0,2; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 5,0; 10,0). Eluaty z każdego etapu procedury charakteryzowały się najwyższym stężeniem cynku, a najniższym chromu. Zaobserwowano wzrost poziomu uwalniania wszystkich metali ciężkich z masy odpadu wraz ze wzrostem stosunku cieczy do ciała stałego (L/S).
The leaching of inorganic components from granular waste can be determined by up-flow column leaching test. The study allows researcher to assess the leaching behaviour of contaminants under specified percolation conditions (dynamic conditions). Dynamic tests simulate real conditions of the leaching of contaminants in the landfill aeration area. Percolation test also enables to perform observations on how the change of the liquid to solid (L/S) ratio influences the obtained concentrations of particular components. Test conditions, including the flow rate of leachant, determine which components are quickly leached and which are released under the influence of contact with matrix. The paper presents the research results of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb i Cr) leaching from smelter waste using of column leaching test. The eluates with predetermined liquid to solid ratio (L/S = 0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 5.0; 10.0) were systematically collected. In eluates from each stage of the procedure the highest concentration of zinc and the lowest concentration of chromium were determined. The increase of heavy metals release from waste mass with increasing the L/S ratio was observed.

Badania obejmowały dwa warianty nawożenia kompostem (K1 – 10 i K2 – 15 g N•m-2) oraz dwa warianty nawożenia mineralnego (NPK) z równorzędnymi dawkami azotu w postaci saletry amonowej, z uzupełnieniem PK w postaci superfosfatu i soli potasowej.
In this article there are present the results of six-year study of infiltration of nitrogen through the sand soil (loamy sand). Every year the soil was fertilized by compost (from sewage sludge) and equivalent doses of nitrogen in mineral fertilizers. Two variants of compost fertilization (K1-10 and K2-15 g N•m-2) were used. Additionally two variants of NPK with equivalent doses of nitrogen as an ammonium nitrate supplemented with PK as a superphosphate and potassium salt were applied. Systematically there were investigated the volume of all leachates and their chemical composition. With increasing doses of fertilizers the concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the leachate were increased. The concentration of nitrogen in the leachate from the soil fertilized by nitrate was much greater than in compost with equivalent dose of nitrogen. Not only nitrates but also nitrogen from soluble organic compounds were rinsed from the soil. In the case of soil fertilized by compost the participation of nitrates in the total value of nitorgen in the leachate was 41-77%. However in the case of fertilization by ammonium sulphate this proportion was significantly higher and was in the range 60-95%. Over the years, a systematic soil fertilization by both ways increased the nitrogen concentrations in leachate. It shows that in the soil there is surplus of nitrogen, increasing during the time.

The results of nitric acid leaching of sludge with the transfer of calcium into solution and the production of calcium nitrate are given. Titanium-containing cake after nitric acid leaching of sludge and electric smelting dust cannot be returned to the technological process due to its high silica content, so the silicon impurity was removed from their composition. Silicon removal was performed by fluoroammonium processing with sublimation of hexafluorosilicate compounds. An amorphous silicon dioxide product was obtained, after ammonia hydrolysis of silicon-containing sublimations and appropriate treatment of the sediment. The residue from the sublimation of silicon fluorides consists mainly of titanium-containing phases and can be suitable for return for electrofusion after ammonia treatment.

Organic matter contained in the waste of food industry or occurring in the households, in the absence of contamination with other kind of waste, may be used to create a “fertiliser”, which could be even reused in the organic production of arable crops. Particular attention is drawn to the fertilisers which may be applied in the case of amateur cultivation of pot plants and in the allotment gardens. The paper presents the results of research regarding the dynamics of the release of nutrients from tablets created with the help of encapsulation of the mixture manufactured from solvent extraction waste of coffee (SCG), modified by the ash obtained from low temperature burning of biomass. In this study, the mixture was determined as a fertilizer. Collagen, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, shellac as well as sodium water glass have been applied as testing membranes in order to slow down the elution of the components from a fertilizer into solution. The durability tests have been carried out according to PN-EN-13266 standard over 118 days at the temperature of 25°C. The obtained results indicate significant differentiation with regard to the leaching of nutrients and organic matter from the tablets depending on the applied membrane. Strong inhibition concerning leaching of the components through membranes and from shellac and polyvinyl acetate has been observed. The remaining membranes did not inhibit the leaching of nutrients in the long-lasting manner; however, even they may be applied in the agricultural practice.
