The underlying principles and content of new technology for automated hydrological predictions of poorly gauged and ungauged basins were reviewed herein. Basin classification principles depending on the availability and spatial-temporal discreteness of the observations of meteorological and hydrological variables were proposed. The prediction procedure for large river systems insufficiently covered by hydrometeorological survey was outlined. The prediction methodology for Sông Sê San river basin, which is the left tributary of Mekong river, was tested. The possible options for preliminary calibration and validation of MLCM3 predictive model (Multi-Layer Conceptual Model, 3rd generation), developed within the framework of set task, were described. The software, implementing the streamflow prediction method for ungauged and poorly gauged special basins of large rivers tributaries, was tested.

The study aimed to evaluate the spatiotemporal variation in the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of Oued Inaouène water in relation to urban discharges that remain the main sources of pollution in the Inaouene basin. During the period from May 2019 to March 2020, seven stations were sampled, six of which are spread along the Inaouène Oued in addition to one reference station that is less affected by urban pollution. The indicators used were: temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity and dissolved oxygen (OD), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), E coli, IE and TC. The quality data obtained were analysed using multivariate statistical methods (the CPA) and the correlation matrix. The results showed that with the exception of the OT station located upstream of urban discharges, the majority of stations downstream of urban discharges have poor quality during both wet and dry seasons, according to the Moroccan standards.

The catchment area of Oued Larbaâ is located in the eastern prerif at the very eastern end of the large Innaouene basin, a stream of Oued Sebou [Lahrach. A et al., 1994]. The objective of the study was to establish a quality comparison of the watershed during the dry and wet seasons. Eight water and sediment samples were taken during the two seasons, all along the main channel of the Larbaa river, taking into account anthropogenic activities and the areas of confluence with its tributaries: Tarmasst, Taza, Larouireg, Defali and Jaouna. The physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, TDS, nitrates, sulfates, chlorides), as well as metal contamination (Al, Zn, Ni, Pb, Ag, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn) were studied in summer. The results revealed the alkaline pH higher than 7, a significant electrical conductivity in several stations, but still conforming to the Moroccan standards. Laboratory analyses reflect that the waters of the basin have generally good quality, except for a few peaks that indicate metallic contamination in Fe and Al. In order to better assess whether there is an anthropogenic effect influencing these results, and to remove the relationships between the different parameters studied, a statistical analysis was carried out with the PCA tool. This analysis made it possible to indicate Cr, Ni and Al as indices of pollution in certain areas. Although the results obtained have been tolerant until now, it is necessary to put in place an action plan to control the areas at risk of contamination during the years.

In order to achieve the task of formulating an optimal drainage model for the Calabar area, the Calabar drainage system was studied using some cartographic techniques to analyze its surface run-off and channel characteristics so as to determine how floods are generated. A morphological analysis was done, using detailed contour maps prepared for the study area. The “Blue line” and “contour crenulations” methods were used to recreate the expected run-off channels or drainage networks under natural non-urbanized conditions. A drainage structure with 6 major basins and 73 sub-basins was discovered. Existing storm drains were constructed without regards to this natural structure and so floods were generated.

The benefit from integrating the information from multi-source was confirmed in the research of hydrologic processes in river basins. However, the use of satellite-based rainfall products in hydrologic stream flow modeling has been limited because of the perceived uncertainty associated with such data. In this study the authors presented the simulated streamflow from a SWAT model driven by merging rainfall between satellite and gauge-observed rainfall for the Lam River Basin. The results demonstrate the usefulness of merging rainfall data for stream flow modelling at a monthly time step.

Opis:
Due to the deposits of quality hard coal, the area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) has been one of the most industrialised regions in Europe for centuries. One of the most significant issues in terms of environmental impact and risks related to mining activities are the discharged mine waters. Mine water is pumped to the surface in great amount from mine workings of active underground mines both in Czech and Polish part of the USCB. In the past, the mine waters used to be discharged to nearby watercourses without systematic control of their amount and quality. It resulted in uncontrolled impacts on quality of the main rivers in the USCB. This is why a technically and economically demanding solution was adopted: discharging of mine (but also waste) waters through an artificial channel – so-called “Olza Collector” – directly to the Oder River, i.e. away of the Olza River and its minor tributaries. Automated control and dosing of waters to the Oder River depending on quality of the discharged waters and quality and quantity of the Oder surface water ensures maintaining of the total content of chlorides and sulphates in Oder below 500 mg/dm3 with the efficiency of more than 90% of days in a year.

Regulation of surface runoff in urban areas with temporary delay by infiltration basins of rainwater in the places of their precipitation and with gradual drainage through the existing reservoirs of small diameters is the most appropriate under the conditions of intensive building development, wear and imperfection of surface drainage systems, especially combined sewerage. Evaluation of application conditions and basic parameters of infiltration basins in surface drainage regulation was carried out on the basis of own experimental studies of infiltration basin fragment with upper typical vegetation layer, numerical computer modeling of surface runoff formation in urban areas, its regulation using infiltration basins and analysis of previous studies. Its water absorption, filtration and clearing indicators were defined on the basis of experimental studies. The self-regenerative restoring function of a vegetative layer, working conditions under the flooded and not flooded conditions were established and defined. According to the amount of suspended solids, BOD, oxidation, pH and dissolved oxygen, the quality of rain runoff when filtering water through the upper vegetation layers of infiltration basins decreases to the normative values.

The work evaluates the effect of anthropogenic pollutants on the quality of water in Lake Bialskie (51º32’07” N 23º00’55” E) and its catchment basin. Samples of water were taken from the lake (4 sampling points) and from wells dug within the catchment basin. The quality of water was analysed in May, June, August and November 2015. In the wells only in single cases was the level of chemical pollution found to exceed drinking water standards. However, in all samples the standard content of manganese was exceeded. In waters from the lake the concentrations of total phosphorus, which can contribute to eutrophication were recorded above the standard level. Both in waters from the lake and from the well a large count of meso- and psychrophiles and Coli and faecal coliforms as well as faecal Enterococci was found, which points to a high degree of contamination of the analysed waters with anthropogenic faeces. The phenomenon was observed to intensify in summer months, which can be associated with increased tourist traffic around the lake in this period.

Opis:
The paper covers the analysis of water management problems in the cross-border reservoir basin of Bukówka, located at the Bóbr river, at 271+540 km of its course, below the Czech-Polish border, in Dolnośląskie Voivodeship. The problems of water management in the context of the reservoir’s functions have been analyzed; these are: flood control, the provision of water during low water level periods for the Water Treatment Plant in Marciszów, the provision of drinking water for the city of Wałbrzych as well as the provision of proper flow in the Bóbr river bed downstream from the reservoir. Due to its localization right below the border with the Czech Republic, the reservoir is exposed to a number of problems. The study has found that the main problems of water management in the basin area included unsatisfactory state of water and wastewater management in the basin, unsatisfactory state of the surface water quality in the basin area of the reservoir, poor condition of streams and drainage ditches, improper arrangement of arable lands and large downslopes and a lack of monitoring stations on tributaries of the reservoir. It has been found that the hydrochemical conditions in the Bukówka reservoir’s section are unfavorable for it. From the eutrophication point of view, the water flowing into the tank is characterized by a large content of nutrients, especially nitrates, phosphates and BOD5. In order to counteract eutrophication it is necessary to lower the concentration of nutrients in the water flowing into the tank. One of the basic ways to do so is to restore the water and wastewater management in the reservoir’s basin. Studies in the Bukówka reservoir provide important information concerning the state of the purity of the water supplying the reservoir. In order to obtain accurate information on the state of purity, a monitoring of hydrological and water quality should be continued. The studies are a part of the strategy of protection of the quality of transboundary waters, proposed in the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes of 1992.

The soil resources in Kosovo are facing challenges due to different human activities. Urbanization, along with economic growth, has further worsened the shortage of soil resources in Kosovo. In the last 20 years, Kosovo has undergone some social, political and economical changes which have made the population to migrate toward plains, where new settlements are formed, and other are extended. Soil resources are important for Kosovo’s inhabitants, who are mainly focused on agriculture. Most of the Kosovo’s terrain is mountainous, which means nearly half of the area is not suitable for agriculture. The Sitnica River basin lies mostly in Kosovo Plain where soils are characterized by high fertility with a great potential for agricultural development. The vicinity parts of the river basin lie in the hilly mountainous areas where soils have low fertility. Good natural conditions have made the River Basin the most densely populated area in Kosovo. Rapid extension of urban and rural settlements changed the land cover; agricultural lands were excluded from primary use, and the agricultural capacity is reduced with the increasing number of settlements on lands with high quality. Sitnica River basin was faced with uncontrolled urbanization, followed by the degradation of agricultural lands and land use changes, where floods occur in some cases or the flood risk is increased. In this case study, the Sitnica River basin will be analysed based on terrain morphology, soil and other natural resources, land use changes and will be a contribution towards sustainable urbanization of settlements in order to preserve soil resources.

Nowadays, the increasing intensity of extreme rainfall and changes in land use have triggered massive floods in various regions of Indonesia. The changes in the characteristics of these two parameters cause an increase in the peak and duration of the flood over time. Peak and duration of flood estimation might be very useful for the national and local government because it is closely related to the effectiveness of prevention and mitigation plan in the future. A hydrograph-based model constitutes one approach to estimating them simultaneously. The objective of this research is to examine the application of ITS-2 – a synthetic unit hydrograph (SUH) model which was developed at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in 2017 – for estimating the peak flood discharge as a basis for planning disaster mitigation programs. This study was carried out by testing the reliability of the ITS-2 Model using the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) indicator by comparing the measured unit hydrograph and synthetic unit hydrograph derived using the model, optimizing the parameters of the model, and then analyzing the transformation of rainfall-flood discharge in the Gumbasa Watershed, one of the major watersheds in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. This catchment is part of the Palu watershed, which is largely a tropical rainforest conservation area known as the Lore Lindu National Park. The input model is based on the design rainfall with a certain return period using the frequency analysis where the data was obtained from the rainfall stations in the study area. The results of the research showed that the performance of the ITS-2 model was still very good with the NSE above 80%. The difference in the peak discharge of these two unit hydrographs is relatively low, with a deviation below 10%. The optimal values of the ITS-2 Model parameter coefficients consisting of C1, C2, and C3 were achieved at 1.29, 0.33 and 1.88, respectively. The results of the hydrograph analysis based on a 1-year to 100-year return period indicate that peak flood discharge ranges from 100 m3/sec to 550 m3/sec. From a series of analyses and tests that have been conducted in the previous and current research, it can be concluded that the ITS-2 Model can be applied to various watershed sizes, especially in Indonesia.
