Opis:
The annual plastic production in Indonesia has exceeded 4.6 million tons and accumulated in the aquatic system. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and Polypropylene (PP) are the most widely used plastics in manufacture of packaging, fibres, and drinking bottles, etc. The degradation of these plastics to micro sizes leads to environmental threats, especially when the micro plastics interact with fresh water microorganism such as microalgae. Therefore, the study on the interaction between micro plastics and microorganisms is really important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of microplastics on the growth of microalgae Spirulina sp and also to evaluate the contribution of microalgae Spirulina sp to the plastic degradation. The interaction between microalgae and microplastics was evaluated in a 1 L glass bioreactor contained microalgae Spirulina sp and PP and PET microplastics with the size of 1 mm at various concentrations (150 mg/500 mL, 250/500 mL and 275 mg/500 mL) for 112 days. The results showed that the tensile strength of micro plastic PET decreased by 0.9939 MPa/day while PP decreased by 0.1977 MPa/day. The EDX analysis of microplastics showed that the decreasing carbon in PET (48.61%) was higher as compared to PP (36.7%). FTIR analysis of Spirulina sp cells showed that the CO2 evolution of cells imposed by PET microplastic was higher than imposed by PP. The growth rate of Spirulina sp applied by micro plastic was lower than the control and the increase of microplastic concentration significantly reduced the growth rate of algae by 75%. This research concluded that biodegradation has important role in the degradation process of plastic.

Opis:
Rawapening Lake is one of Indonesia’s national priority lakes that is experiencing environmental problems which are urgently required to be solved due to its functions. The decline in the environmental quality of Rawapening Lake includes sedimentation, water pollution and excess of nutrients, especially Phosphorus (P) and Nitrogen (N) into the lake that induced uncontrolled growth of aquatic plants, one of which is water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms). Many activities had been done to reduce the covering of water hyacinth in Rawapening Lake that tends to increase by the time, but no significant result has been achieved. Therefore, this research was conducted in order to study the growth rate of water hyacinth with mesocosm in Rawapening Lake as a baseline to develop suitable management. There were three different sites, namely: Site I in the floating net cage area (FNCA), Rowoboni Village, Site II in the natural area of Bejalen Village which is far from the aquaculture sites, and Site III in the upper reaches of the Tuntang river, Asinan Village. The research was performed in November-December 2019 with the measurements of growth rate, addition number clump and water hyacinth covering every week. The experiment was conducted in the 1 x 1 meter mesocosm, with three replication in every site. In every mesocosm water hyacinth with similar initial weight of 160 grams and number of leaves 6-7 strands were grown in the mesocosm. On day 7 (H7) the average wet weight of water hyacinth increased by 201%. In the fourth week (H28) the average wet weight of water hyacinth increased by 788% compared to the initial weight when planted. The highest relative growth rate (RGR) value of water hyacinth was at site III (7.26%/ day), followed by Site I (7.03%/day), and Site II (6.40%/day), respectively. The doubling time (DT) value of water hyacinth at the site I was 9.9 day, site II – 10.8 day, and site III – 9.6 day. One clump of water hyacinth weighing 160 grams was able to cover 1 m2 of mesocosm within 21 days. On the basis of these results, to manage water hyacinth blooms one has to consider its growth rate.

Opis:
This article discusses the ability of the Cellular Automata (CA) Markov method to project rice sufficiency by considering the conversion of massive rice fields, such as the ones in Indonesia. The conversion of rice fields into land use for non-farming due to the rapidly growing population, industry and economic needs is increasingly affecting the rice self-sufficiency. With the development of remote sensing techniques, such as CA Markov, which has been used for years in spatial change projection, there is a need to assess the rice field conversion and its impact on the rice field self-sufficiency. The process is not solely based on CA Markov but also includes an object-based classification method utilising multi-temporal spot image data to derive land use maps, CA Markov for rice field conversion projection and rice self-sufficiency assessment, which was developed by assessing the availability of rice, consumption and production. Using the Indramayu district as the study area, the results indicate that within the next 20 years, the rice field area will decrease, and the impact on rice self-sufficiency will be 5.34 for Business as usual (BAU) and 0.47 when considering population growth. The previous research validated the results and indicated the efficiency of this method for rice self-sufficiency projection. Moreover, a management assessment was also conducted and indicated that in order to maintain rice self-sufficiency, innovation in the planting and seed systems as well as in farmers’ welfare management, such as incentives and subsidies, local food diversification systems and innovative food technique development to support food diversification, should be considered.
