Opis:
The biological methods of removing the phosphorus compounds from wastewater as applied currently at treatment plants may no longer be regarded as sufficient. They can therefore be augmented with physicochemical methods, raising the efficiency of the wastewater treatment system. Indeed, almost all large urban wastewater treatment plants practice precipitation of phosphorus using salts of iron and aluminum in the form of chemical coagulants. Nevertheless, the search for new ways of assisting with the removal of the biogenic element from wastewater, e.g. by dosing bentonites, fly ash and post-technological sludge from water treatment stations, or even unconventional organic sorbents such as rice husks, is ongoing. A further unconventional material in the P-removal from wastewater may take the form of powdered mineral materials. The work presented here shows the results of laboratory scale trials on the P-removal using brick dust and powdered ceramsite (expanded clay).

Opis:
The article reports the conducted analyses of certain chemical parameters characterising the sediments of Poland’s Besko Reservoir. Specifically, determinations concerned the pH value, percentage organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbonates (CO32-), total phosphorus (TP) and its fractions, as well as heavy metals (Fe, Al, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, Zn, Mn). The sediments have a slight alkaline reaction, with pH values correlating positively with the high content of carbonates. The sediments have low organic matter content, while organic carbon accounts for about 30% of OM. The values for the C:N ratio point to an allochthonous origin for organic matter. The analysis of phosphorus fractionation showed that inorganic phosphorus (IP) is predominant at every research station. The lowest percentage for a fraction was in turn obtained for NAIP. This testifies to a slight anthropogenic impact of the catchment area. The sediments can be classified as of the 2nd purity class (according to PIG), due to their highest concentration of chromium. According to Müller’s classification, the sediments can be classified as purity class 3 (i.e. with moderate contamination). The values noted for the EF coefficient confirm a very strong enrichment by chromium ions. In addition, chromium, copper, nickel and cadmium have a negative effect on aquatic organisms. The results show that the sediments can be used for example in building and maintaining hydraulic structures.

Opis:
In wastewater treatment, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is a relatively new alternative to the activated sludge method. The biogranulation of biomass ensues when appropriate environmental conditions in a reactor are ensured, and one of the factors determining this is the organic loading rate (OLR). As a literature review suggests, the optimal values of OLR for AGS technology are in the range of 2.50–7.50 g COD/(dm3∙d), the aim of the work detailed here was to evaluate the impact of powdered ceramsite on biogranulation in two Granular Sequencing Batch Reactors (GSBRs) in which OLR was equal to just 2.10 g COD/(dm3∙d) (R1) and 1.0 g COD/(dm3∙d) (R2). The research was carried out in laboratory scale with using synthetic wastewater containing different concentration of organic compounds. In the course of the research, a more intensive process of biogranulation was noted in reactor R1, and mean diameters of granules on the last day of experimentation were 962 and 274 µm for R1 and R2, respectively. While the organic loading rate equal to 2.10 g COD/(dm3∙d) could allow granule formation, the results also pointed that lower food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratios favour biogranulation. This parameter was indirectly affected by the application of powdered ceramsite, because the powdered material improved the sludge sedimentation properties (average values of SVI30 being 30.1±12.8 and 36.9±10.9 cm3/g). The result of this was more-limited leaching of biomass from reactors (with average values for MLVSS at 4.37±1.23 and 3.03±0.67 g/dm3).

Opis:
The paper presents physicochemical studies of nine reactive materials for removing phosphorus from wastewater and water. The materials under analysis are raw forms of marl and travertine along with their thermally treated forms at temperatures of 500 °C, 650 °C, 700 °C (travertine), 700 °C, 900 °C, 1000 °C (marl) and the commercial material Polonite®. The scope of the research included morphological analysis and elemental composition, specific surface area, pore volume and diameter, losses on ignition and the amount of elements leached from materials. The results of the research allowed assessing the impact of physicochemical properties and thermal modification on the efficiency of phosphorus binding by these materials. All the tested sorbents show the highest calcium content among the elements with the ability to bind phosphorus. The size of the specific surface does not determine the efficiency of phosphorus retention by the tested materials; therefore it is advisable to study the mechanism of its binding. The thermal modification process, along with the increase in the treatment temperature, improves the regularity of marl and travertine structures, which also manifests itself in increasing the efficiency of phosphorus removal.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono analizę gospodarki osadowej i biogazowo-energetycznej w oczyszczalni ścieków w Opolu w aspekcie uzyskiwania biogazu i jego wykorzystania do produkcji energii elektrycznej.
Increasing requirements of wastewater treatments and the development of wastewater treatment and sewage sludge systems cause a significant increase in the demand for electricity and heat. An alternative way to obtain cheap energy is to use biogas produced in the anaerobic digestion process from sewage sludge. The paper presents an analysis of sewage sludge and biogas-energy management at the wastewater treatment plant in Opole in the aspect of obtaining biogas and its use for electricity production. The biogas-energy system was functioning properly in 2017–2019. A total of 7.26 GWh of electricity was produced from biogas in two power generators, which allowed to cover nearly 35% of the demand for electricity.
