Opis:
The current policy of waste management requires, above all, a gradual reduction of waste amount and, to a larger extent, forces us to seek new methods of waste disposal. Recycling the energy contained in biomass waste is a more and more universally applied method of thermal converting. Biomass combustion allows saving fossil fuels which fits into sustainable development. This paper checks the possibility of using spent coffee ground (SCG) in energy recycling using a combustion process. This particular biomass type up to now has not been widely examined, which inclines to consider its usage as a potential additive to alternative fuels. In the study, we examined the quality of fuel, which was in a form of briquette, made of beech shavings with 10 and 25% of post-exploitation waste obtained during the process of coffee infusion. This waste, if fresh, is distinguished by its high hydration. However, after drying it may constitute a valuable additive to alternative fuels. It increases the calorific value of fuel and reduces briquettes’ hardness what contributes to reducing resistance of conveying screw in stoves.

Optimization of the biodegradable wastes management is one of the main goals of the activities taken up in the European Union. The aim of the present paper is to define the possibilities of supporting the process of golden rod yield (Solidago canadensis L.) by using different mineral-organic fertilizers, in a form of granulated substances, produced from extracted coffee wastes (CSG) as well as from ash which is the result of woody biomass combustion. Golden rod, as a potential energetic plant, is very easy to grow because it covers the grounds which are not utilized agriculturally or the ones localised in the close neighbourhood of industrial areas. For certain experimental purposes, a field experiment was conducted. Six experimental plots constituted its basis, two experimental fertilizers based on the extracted coffee wastes (in the amount of 100g/m2), ash from the process of thermal biomass transition and two commercial fertilizers were applied. After 160 days of the experiment, the golden rod harvest was submitted to quantitative-qualitative analysis. An analysis of basic soil parameters (pH, EC, TOC) was also carried out and the content of significant elements, as far as fertilizers are concerned, N, P, K, Ca, Mg was analysed too. As a result of the conducted experiment, the yield rise was observed, both in the case of the plants fed with commercial fertilizers as well as the ones cultivated on the basis of the extracted wastes. Using fertilizers does not only allow for management of the wastes produced in farm areas but also enables to increase the achieved amount of golden rod crops as well as to boost energy that is sourced in the process of biomass used for energetic purposes.

Coffee pulp and husk are the primary residues of the coffee agro-industry. Disposing of them into the land can bring a serious problem on the environment. Strategies are needed to convert it into more valuable products as well as reduce the risk of environmental damage. This paper reports experimental and simulation investigation on the pyrolysis of Gayo arabica coffee pulp and husk in a pilot scale reactor. The investigation included finding the chemical and physical properties of biomass under ultimate, proximate, bomb calorimeter and TGA analyses. During the pyrolysis experiments, 3 kg of dried raw material was fed into the reactor and heated from room temperature to 600 °C, then held for 2.5 h. Afterwards, the resulting biochar and pyrolytic oil ware quantified for product distribution analysis. Modeling and simulation of the pyrolysis process were performed using Aspen Plus V10 software. Experimental results show that biochar is the main product giving a yield of 43.83%. The percentage of pyrolytic oil and un-condensable gas products are 25.5% and 30.67%, respectively. The thermodynamic simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental result, which helps in optimization and scaling up reactor.

This research focused on using spent coffee grounds as a source of caffeine by ultrasound-assisted extraction technique. Two types of ultrasound techniques (ultrasonic bath and ultrasonic probe) were studied to extract caffeine. The effect of the sonication type sonication power, extraction time, and extraction temperature on the extraction efficiency was investigated. The results demonstrated that extraction by an ultrasonic probe is superior to ultrasonic bath extraction. The highest caffeine recovery was obtained at 55 °C by using an ultrasound bath where caffeine concentration was 795.74 mg/L after 60 min. The bioactivity of extracted caffeine was also studied and compared with the bioactive of standard caffeine against candida albicance yeast. The results showed that the minimum inhibition concentration for natural caffeine was 100 mg/L which is half of the minimum inhibition concentration of standard caffeine.

Opis:
Safety of environment and human health is an essential requirement of modern industrial techniques. Therefore, using natural agents in tanning industry may emerge as a trusted method to avoid the chemical contamination caused by using traditional chromium salts in tanning process. This study aimed to evaluate the hot water extract of used coffee grounds (UCGs) as a vegetable tanning agent. The collected UCGs were dried and extracted with hot water at 90 °C for 2h. The phytochemical screening properties of UCGs extract were determined. Sufficient amount of extract was prepared to be used in leather tanning. Three groups were tanned with UCGs extract solely at concentrations of 20, 30 or 40% of pelts’ weight, while another three groups were tanned with the same concentrations and then re-tanned with 10% of a synthetic tanning agent “Phenol sulfonates”. On tanned leathers, organoleptic, physical and chemical properties were determined; scanning electron micrographs were depicted to examine the leather surface and collagen fiber bundles. Analysis of UCGs extract revealed that it has good tanning properties, as it contained tannins (14.92%), tannins/non tannins ratio (2.06), hide powder (39.57) and Stiasny number (21.16). The results of leather properties showed that using UCGs extract alone at concentration of 40% achieved the best results for the vegetable tanning where the tanned leather had higher (P<0.05) tensile strength, tearing strength and shrinking temperature than that treated with the lower level of 20% UCGs extract. However, 40% of UCGs extract is highly recommended to be used to accomplish the required shrinkage temperature that should be ≥ 70 °C. UCGs extract could be successfully used as tanning agent in vegetable tanning to produce durable leathers with good fullness; it may be used for different manufacturing products, such as footwear and bags. Moreover, using a combination of UCGs extract at any of the used concentrations with phenol sulfonates 10% led to significant improvement in all studied traits as compared with using UCGs extract alone.

Opis:
Organic plant cultivation, especially those intended for human consumption, poses new requirements for gardening. It is recommended to use organic slow-action fertilizers, which provide doses of nutrients essential for plants for a long time. Particularly valuable fertilizers are those that arise within the household, due to their high quality and the absence of costs associated with their purchase and transport. Organic matter contained in the food industry waste or arising in households, in the absence of contamination by other types of waste, can be used for self-production of organic fertilizer. The paper presents the results of testing organic fertilizers, which you can make yourself, destined for the cereal plants. The experimental fertilizers were made from coffee spent grounds (CSG) and ash from the thermal conversion of biomass (A), and the components limiting the amount of pests in the form of leaves and flowers of tansy (Tanacetum vulgare L.). The fertilizer can be used at the time of planting and sowing, because of the slow release of nutrients. Moreover, the addition of leaves and flowers of tansy helps to protect the seedling due to the content of essential oils. As a comparison, the horse manure and rabbit droppings fertilizers were used. Such fertilizers can be prepared independently, which leads not only to reducing the weight of biodegradable and mineral waste, but also provides the ability to generate financial savings of the household and promote organic gardening. Fertilizers made from a mixture of CSG and A support the implementation of good agricultural practice and sustainable development.

Organic matter contained in the waste of food industry or occurring in the households, in the absence of contamination with other kind of waste, may be used to create a “fertiliser”, which could be even reused in the organic production of arable crops. Particular attention is drawn to the fertilisers which may be applied in the case of amateur cultivation of pot plants and in the allotment gardens. The paper presents the results of research regarding the dynamics of the release of nutrients from tablets created with the help of encapsulation of the mixture manufactured from solvent extraction waste of coffee (SCG), modified by the ash obtained from low temperature burning of biomass. In this study, the mixture was determined as a fertilizer. Collagen, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, shellac as well as sodium water glass have been applied as testing membranes in order to slow down the elution of the components from a fertilizer into solution. The durability tests have been carried out according to PN-EN-13266 standard over 118 days at the temperature of 25°C. The obtained results indicate significant differentiation with regard to the leaching of nutrients and organic matter from the tablets depending on the applied membrane. Strong inhibition concerning leaching of the components through membranes and from shellac and polyvinyl acetate has been observed. The remaining membranes did not inhibit the leaching of nutrients in the long-lasting manner; however, even they may be applied in the agricultural practice.

The management of smallholder coffee plantations in Bengkulu Province has not yet conducted according to good agricultural practices. As a result, the productivity and quality of green beans produced are also low. The efforts to improve this condition need to be made in order to maintain the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of this agribusiness. The present study aimed at identifying the life cycle of the coffee agroindustry in supporting sustainable agriculture using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. The results of the study revealed that the energy input from the use of fertilizers, herbicides, manpower, and fossil fuel was 4349.08 MJ/ha. The energy output from the green beans and coffee husks was 9763.39 MJ/ha and 13524.21 MJ/ha, respectively, so the efficiency based on the input-output ratio was 5.35. The emission values to the global warming potential, acidification, and eutrophication were 109.43 kg eqCO2 , 345.70 g SO2 eq/ha/year, and 28.54 g PO4 3-eq/ha/year, respectively. The coffee agribusiness in Kepahiang Regency is categorized as organic. The coffee agribusiness was economically feasible with a Net B/C of 2.87, but the land ownership which was 1.45 ha/household and the present agribusiness conditions indicate a low sustainability rate.

Coffee production has been a major source of income in Indonesia since the early twentieth century. This study aimed to estimate the energy balances and determine the environmental impact of Robusta and Arabica coffee production as well as identify the measures to increase the efficiency of Robusta and Arabica yield using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The potential adverse impacts of processing ground coffee manifest themselves in the forms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, acidification, as well as water and environmental pollution due to solid and liquid waste disposal. The total GHG emissions for Arabica coffee processing is 1,804 t CO2-eq year-1 while for Robusta, it is 1,356 t CO2-eq year-1. The total acidification potential for Arabica coffee processing can be given by 8,013 kg NO2-eq year-1 and 10,663 kg SO2-eq year-1, while for Robusta coffee processing, the potential for acidification is represented by 60.97 kg NO2-eq year-1 and 79.58 kg SO2-eq year-1, and the potential GHG per unit weight of Arabica and Robusta ground coffee processing were 98.7 CO2-eq kg-1 and Robusta 119.6 CO2-eq kg-1, respectively. The potential measures to mitigate this include replacing gasoline with biofuel, utilising liquid waste with chemical processing, and solid wastes of coffee production, such as brickquetess and bio-pellets for renewable energy.
