    At the present time to production of high quality maps a vector spatial data are needed. They can be edited and modified at any time and significant shorten or facilitate the process of Earth surface mapping. The easy access to the data and the automation processes of maps production lead unfortunately to the fact, that the newly created maps very often did not match the cartographic standards. The lack of spatial reference of map elements is often the significant weakness. This paper describes the possibility of combining both, the visualization (VIS) of raster maps and vector data (GIS).

    W artykule omówiono kilka zagadnień związanych z redagowaniem map kropkowych, a więc sposoby wyznaczania wielkości i wagi kropek, sposoby rozmieszczenia kropek na mapie oraz zarysowano problematykę relacji metody kropkowej do innych form prezentacji kartograficznej, co w przyszłości może ułatwić opracowanie poprawnej klasyfikacji kartograficznych metod i form prezentacji.
    The article discusses several issues concerning the elaboration of dot maps. The dot method is difficult to digitize and requires considerable editing skill. Discussed are the following issues: range of application of the method, method of determination of dot size and value, methods of dot distribution on the map. Although the range of application of the dot method is rather broad, it is most rarely used by cartographers. Among many methods of determination of dot size and value it is worth noting the method of G. Ozerova (1973), which facilitates the establishment of these parameters on maps of population distribution (fig. 3 and 4). According to the author, on almost any map dots are distributed regularly within marked areas, but the final effect depends on the scale of size reduction of the map for reproduction. The last section of the article discusses the dot method in relation to other methods of cartographic presentation. According to the author there is some similarity between the dot method and the pictorial point symbol method (fig. 6,7), the area symbol method (fig. 8), the proportional symbols method (fig. 9), the repeated symbol method (fig. 10) and the choropleth map (fig. 11). Such analysis may aid better understanding of cartographic methods of presentation and help to prepare their proper classification.

    W artykule zaproponowano rozszerzenie metodyki opracowywania map koncentracji przestrzennej. Omówiono także wyniki przeprowadzonych badań, wskazując iż dodatkowy parametr metody pozwala na uzyskanie przestrzennie spójnych klas obiektów dla poszczególnych wydzieleń tematycznych.
    The ability to think of the map as a means of presenting not only real objects, but also abstract phenomena allowed for intensive growth of thematic cartography in 19th century. Later development of cartographic research method (analytical cartography) was the result of perceiving the map as a tool for examining spatial dispersion and interdependence of phenomena. The methodology of elaborating maps of spatial concentration is one of them. Contemporary technological development allows to eliminate calculation problems connected to elaborating such maps, it requires however making the rules of creating them more precise. The authors present the implementation of both the mosaic and the zone concentration method for a few selected phenomena. Whereas mosaic concentration maps were done according to original methodological assumptions (see F. Uhorczak 1971), an additional parameter of distance from zone nucleus was used for zone concentration. The parameter prevents concentration zones from expanding, which on previously elaborated concentration maps was the cartographer's task and resulted from his knowledge and experience. It was shown how the change in weight of that parameter impacts shape and distribution of concentration zones. It was also demonstrated how the change in base unit shape impacts the result of the method.

    Global visualization and monitoring of the planet are some of the current scientific tasks. Global warming of the climate, global pollution of the environment, global spreading of disease, global conflicts and global geopolitical interests, transcontinental economic structures, global division of labor etc. all require innovative technologies of global mapping and presentation on globes. The history of globes of the Earth and heavens spheres show that these amazing inventions of human mind take many forms, have many uses, show various features and big thematic variety. At the beginning of the third millennium globes were reborn in a virtual digital form. They exist on computer screens, are carried on notebook hard disks and downloaded from the Internet. Cartography made a significant step forward in its development: a cartographic large-scale model of a global electronic-information system of Planet Earth was created, capable of continuous updating. Globes are a good example of an old invention getting a new life at the next stage of cognition and development of technology. Global electronic large-scale mapping and multi-stage generalization allow for interactive transition from globes to maps and back. 'Personal' globes-atlases have been prepared not only for the Earth, but also for other planets of the solar system.
