Opis:
At the end of the 60’s of the last century in the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography researches on the use of air photos for non-topographic purposes has been undertaken. In 1971 the Laboratory of Aerial Photointerpretation was set up. Its assignment was to use aerial photos made with different techniques, especially black and white as well as color infrared films to obtain information about the status and condition of the geographical environment. It should be mentioned that the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography received approval from the US authorities for the purchase of Kodak Aerochrome Infrared film and to use it for research purposes. Aerial color infrared photographs have been widely used to study the health status and sanitary conditions of pine stands. In 1974 the Laboratory was transformed into the Department of Interpretation of Aerial and Satellite Images. On the initiative of the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography, supported by other ministries, and above all by the Central Office of Geology, the Presidium of Government adopted the decision No. 145/75 on the use satellite images and aerial photographs in managing the national economy. On the basis of this decision, at the beginning of 1976 Director of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography set up within the Institute the National Remote Sensing Centre – OPOLiS.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono zagadnienie zwiększenia szczegółowości wydzieleń zawartych w bazach danych opracowanych w ramach programu CORINE Land Cover poprzez zastosowanie mniejszego pola jednostki kartowania i wprowadzenie czwartego poziomu wydzieleń. Porównano zawartość baz danych CORINE Land Cover z nową, szczegółową bazą opracowaną dla powiatu radziejowskiego przy wykorzystaniu tego samego źródła informacji, czyli zdjęć wykonanych przez satelitę Landsat.
The databases prepared within the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) program do not meet the requirements of most national users because of their low spatial resolution. The authors of the article decided to increase this resolution from 25 ha to 2 ha. As the source of information they used the same satellite images which were the basis of CLC database. For an example they chose the area of agricultural Radziejów district (powiat) in central Poland. In CLC-90 base which represents land cover in this region there are 187 polygons with the average size of 324.2 ha representing 13 forms of terrain cover. After having changed the spatial resolution to 2 ha the number of distinguished terrain forms rose to 20. The number of polygons increase to 967 while their average area decreased to 63 ha. In order to make the database more detailed the fourth level of legend was also introduced. It made it possible to increase the number of distinguished forms of terrain cover to 34. A comparison of the data bases prepared for the year 1990 (CLC-90) at the turn of the centuries showed in Radziejów district some minor changes in land cover, which took place on the area of about 147 ha and were represented by only two polygons. At the same time the comparison of detailed data bases showed that those changes covered the area of over 1500 ha and were represented with 297 polygons.

Opis:
The Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw has finalized the preparation of the next database of land cover in Poland - CLC-2006. This time the source of data were pictures from IRS and SPOT satellites. Due to different characteristics of new pictures their interpretation was more difficult. To facilitate identification of particular land cover forms the area was analyzed twice, in different periods of vegetation. Methodology applied for the new database differed from the methodology used for CLC-90 and CLC-2000 databases. This time changes in land cover were marked if their range exceeded 5 hectares. A comparison of the new database with the previous one led to a conclusion that changes had involved little more than 0,5% of the country's area. Most of them involved forest areas and had resulted from forest exploitatic and natural disasters. Changes in agricultural cover involved a slightly smaller area. Information included in CLC-2006 database can be further enhanced with the results of LUCAS project conducted in Poland by EUROSTAT (the Statistical Office of the European Communities) in 2007. All the databases prepared within the consecutive CLC projects, administered by EEA (European Environmental Agency) are available free of charge through EEA and GIOS (General Inspectorate of Environmental Protection) services.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono problematykę kartowania użytkowania ziemi i pokrycia terenu, realizowaną w ramach różnych przedsięwzięć międzynarodowych.
At the moment there are many international programs which collect data on land cover and land use. Some of them have to be mentioned: Global Terrestrial Observing System (GTOS), International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), Pan-European Land Use and Land Cover Monitoring (RELCOM) and EU's CORINE Land Cover (CLC). In the early 1990s a database of land cover in Europe was created within CLC program. It provides information on the distribution of 44 main land cover forms. The database is to be updated every 10 years, so in the beginning of the 21st. century a first update was conducted. It resulted in a CLC-2000 database and a base of land cover changes in the years 1990-2000. Landsat satellite images taken on the turn of the 20th. century were the source material used in the process. In 2002 Poland joined the land cover update project. Instytut Geodezji i Kartografii (Institute of Geodesy and Cartography) took up the task. The criteria for the elaboration of the new database (CLC-2000) remained the same as for the previous one (CLC-90), however the method had been changed: it employed visual interpretation of images displayed on a monitor screen. The methodology assumed geometric correction of the database from the nineties. The aim was to unify the base on European level and make it consistent. Therefore it focused on proper identification of particular land cover forms (in accord with the modified legend), accuracy of their borders and formal agreement of topology and data format. Correction of CLC-90 database was performed on the basis of satellite images from the nineties transformed into ,,1992" projection. New satellite images were also transformed to the same projection. Following the database update methodology, the new base registered only the changes over 5 ha (for changes of existing Forms area) or over 25 ha (when a new cover form appeared). A comparison of land cover databases for 1990 (CLC-90) and 2000 (CLC-2000) revealed land cover changes in the last decade of the twentieth century. In most cases they turned out to be minor. They covered just over 2500 km2, which represents only about 0,80% of the area of Poland. There are also several other products which are going to be prepared within CORINE Land Cover program. They include satellite ortophotomaps, mosaics of satellite images covering particular countries and the whole Europe, as well as raster and vector databases of land cover in different spatial resolutions. Institute of Geodesy and Cartography also prepared a map showing the distribution of all 31 land coverforms in Poland, which were stored in CLC-2000 database. The map was published at a scale of 1:1 000 000.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono klasyfikację zakresu treści planów wybranych miast europejskich. Zakres treści planów poddano analizie metodą graficznego porządkowania danych Bertina, a następnie dokonano klasyfikacji uzyskanych wyników, otrzymując w rezultacie podział planów miast na pięć grup podobnych pod względem zakresu przedstawianej na nich treści.
City maps are ones of the most often published and used cartographic publications. They are used by many groups of readers with various requirements and preparation to map reading. In the last two decades particularly significant changes in richness, variety, graphic level and detail took place in the maps of cities in East and Middle Europe. They followed the political transformation of the early 90-ties which abolished censorship and introduced market economy. In Western Europe situation was quite different because cartography developed continuously, without being distracted by external factors, such as censorship. In order to compare the range of contents of European city maps 50 plans of 20 cities had been chosen, mainly capitals, published by leading private cartographic publishers from the same country as the city itself. Bertin's method of graphic arrangement of data was used to compare the range of contents. Performed analyses showed 5 groups of city maps with common features as well as plans of 5 cities the contents of which did not belong to any of the groups. The analyses showed differences between the contents of city maps published in East and Middle Europe and those published in West Europe. The contents of maps published in East and Central Europe is usually much richer than in those from the West. This results from different conditions which influenced the development of city cartography in different parts of Europe. The analyses made it possible to determine the elements of contents which constitute a frame of European city maps, and appear on each map, irrespective of the presented area, place of publication, richness of contents or editorial level, as well as elements characteristic for particular publications.

Opis:
W artykule porównano zakres treści i formę graficzną trzech polskich cywilnych map topograficznych w skali 1:50 000: w układzie "1965", w układzie "1992" oraz w układzie "WGS-84".
In Poland currently there are three topographic maps at the scale of 1:50 000 for civil use: -map in ,,1965" coordinate system published in 1977-1982 by the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography, covering the whole country, - map in ,,1992" coordinate system, exept first 48 sheets of Mazowsze region, which were edited in ,,1942" coordinate system), published in 1995-2002 by the Surveyor General of Poland, covering almost 60% of the country's area, - ,,WGS-84" map in UTM projection published in 2003-2006 by the Surveyor General of Poland with the Polish Military Gegraphic Service, covering 25% of the country's area. Comparison of the range of contents and graphic form of the three maps clearly shows the superiority of the map in ,,1992" system. Compared to the other two it employs a new way of presenting built-up areas. It contains significantly more information about the function and intensity of exploitation of built-up areas and offers provides a more complete picture of anthropogenic landscape than any other map in that scale, in Poland or abroad. In addition, the ,,1992" map has the most detailed presentation of streets and relief. Detailed depiction of plant cover and crop areas is achieved by lowering the area limits, below which a particular object is not shown with its outline. Similarly, lowering of the length limit of watercourses and area limit of water pools led to a more detailed presentation of water network. The contents of the ,,1992" map was also enriched by a much larger number of acronyms and descriptions of public buildings and industrial sites. The map in ,,1965" system was printed in four colors, ,,WGS-84" map in five, and the ,,1992" map - in six. The comparison of graphic form of the three maps gave lowest marks to the least readable "1965" map. The ,,1992" map is characterized by wider use of color, which adds to its readability and attractiveness. Substituting black color, traditionally used for buildings and road network with brown resulted in higher graphic capacity and better presentation of public buildings and industrial sites. Consistent use of green for green areas, blue for water and light brown for relief facilitates perception of particular categories of map contents. Application of color patterns for grass areas and orchards allowed for a clear and detailed presentation of their outline. The graphic level of the .WGS-84" map is higher than that of former military maps and the map in "1965" system, partly due to the application of several solutions from the ,,1992" map (e.g. consistent use of green for green areas, simplified presentation of built--up areas). Some elements of the ,,WSG-84" map, such as main roads or borders of natural reserves, are more readable than in the other two. The comparison of the three maps in 1:50 000 shows that the newly planned map in this scale, which is to be prepared using the topographic database should base on the map in ,,1992" coordinate system.
