Opis:
Metodę semantyczną przedstawioną w poprzednim artykule autora zastosowano do analizy podstawowych metafor trzech programów GIS, z których dwa są popularnymi produktami rynkowymi, a trzeci jest dziełem autora.
Semantic analysis, outlined in previous paper (W. Pomianowski 2005), has been applied to three GIS packages. ArcGIS and Maplnfo are commercially successful and popular mapping tools, Aviso was conceived by author and is not yet available to the public. The analysis revealed that common set of terms is used in three systems, but the meaning beyond them is different. Graphics style metaphor is most uniform in three systems. ArcGIS and Aviso seem to be closely related in the way they build upon map and layer metaphors, while Maplnfo suffers from inconsistencies, terminological confusion and lazy coding. The strength and high abstraction level of metaphors is not crucial for casual cartography, however it becomes important for advanced cartographic projects, where map long term maintenance is a major factor.

Opis:
W artykule przeanalizowano i oceniono możliwości opracowania kartogramów i kartodiagramów w jednym z programów typu GIS -MapInfo Professional 10.5. Omówione możliwości programu skonfrontowano z zasadami metodyki kartograficznej.
Autors analyze and evaluate the possibilities of elaborating choropleth maps and diagrams using one of the most popular programs for servicing geographic information systems - MapInfo Professional 10.5. The article focuses only on two forms of cartographic presentation since they are the most frequently used and described in detail in MapInfo. The classification of map elaboration methods used in the MapInfo program is completely different from the classification accepted in Polish cartography. Not only is the "classification" completely different, but also MapInfo features methods unknown and incorrect from the cartographical point of view. These erratic solutions adversely affect the evaluation of the program. MapInfo Professional is made for a wide range of potential users, therefore it would seem natural to expect that they be given correct basics of cartographic methodology. Terminology used both in the program and in the MapInfo guides very often differs from the terminology accepted in Polish cartography, which is a serious problem. Not only does it adversely affect the understanding of the program, but also causes chaotic terminology to spread. In the analyzed program the diagram can be generated by as many as four methods of generating a thematic map which makes it the program's most developed method of cartographic presentation. However, it is impossible to generate a diagram map illustrating values of a phenomenon with the use of a graph. Considering all sorts of diagrams (one- and multi--parameter, flat and three-dimentional block), it appears that only a small part of those can be generated in MapInfo Professional. There are options to elaborate one parameter flat geometric diagrams in the shape of a circle, half circle, column, square, triangle and polygon. While editing, the user has the option of changing their filling and contour. The lack of the option to adapt the size of diagrams to the size of base units is the program's very serious disadvantage, as automation and acceleration of map elaboration process is a feature quite expected of GIS software. Including an adequate algorithm seems indispensible. It is possible to generate a line diagram in the same form as a related to point or an area diagram in the program. In such a case the diagram is put in the "middle" of the line to which it refers (fig. 8). The solution is completely inconsistent with cartographic methodology and cannot be classified within cartographic methods of presentation. According to the information in MapInfo user guide (2008) the so-called division method is the equivalent of the second method of presentation mentioned in this article- the choropleth map. It appears, however, that with this "method" it is possible to present all quantitative data. There is no warning that the choropleth map can only be applied for presenting relative data. Moreover, there is no option to generate a continuous or two-variable choropleth map, or a correct legend. Attempts to generate choropleth maps and diagrams in MapInfo have proved that the suggested solutions are not entirely correct and satisfactory. Although the program contains many useful functions, they are underdeveloped and occasionally can even mislead the user.

Opis:
Maps are basic tools in many branches dealing with geographic space; map analysis belongs to primary research methods of natural science. These methods, which are a part of "cartographic research method" (K.A. Salishchev 1955), include: description basing on a visual analysis of a map, graphic methods, grapho-analytical methods, cartometry, morphometry, mathematical analysis methods, statistical methods and information theory methods (A.M. Berlant 1978). In American cartography, W.R.Tobler started so called "analytical cartography" which bases on quantitative, mathematical and statistical relations between geographical phenomena. It covers basic cartographic issues: transformations of map projections, transformations of point, linear and spatial objects, affinical transformations, transformations of statistical surfaces and structure of map data as well as volumetric transformations (J.-C. Muller 1991, A.J.Kimerling 1989, K.C. Clarke 1998, H. Moellering 2000). Data transformation is performed by computer systems, mainly geographical information systems, which are considered to be the natural successor of the methods of spatial phenomena analysis (P.A. Longley et al. 2001), known from cartographic research method. The main difference between cartographic research method and analytical cartography lies in scopee of research. The first concentrates mainly on formal aspect of methods and interpretation of results, the second stresses basic problems and terms of the field. The character of computer systems changed the approach to methods and rules of parameter assignment. Analytical cartography is currently linked to a new scientific discipline connected to spatial information systems "Geographic Information Science" (D. Mark 2000, H. Moellering 2000). In GIS there exist many methods of data transformation, basing on various principles, which are specified in software manuals and GIS handbooks. They can be divided into several groups, differing in complexity and character of operation. These metgod are described in the article. Application of various types of analyses and operations in GIS systems is labeled "cartographic modeling" (C.D. Tomlin 1990, J. Delaney 1999); it can refer to physical as well as socio-economic phenomena. It depends on phenomena models, which simultaneously take into account apatial and functional aspects. The models can be of explanative or predictive character. All methods, which traditionally belonged to cartographical research method can now be realized with GIS. When used properly, they can add to its development.

Opis:
Artykuł jest czwartym i ostatnim z cyklu "Nowe oblicza kartografii". Rozwinięto w nim i uszczegółowiono zagadnienia dotyczące znaczenia baz danych geograficznych w kartografii.
The article is the fourth and last of a 'New faces of cartography' series. It develops and discusses in detail the issue of map production using geographical databases. Special attention is paid to a common differentiation between databases built according to a Digital Landscape Model (DLM) and Digital Cartographic Model (DCM). The author discusses the benefits of modern database technologies for map production and the impact of their structure on the level of difficulty of cartographic data visualization. The article presents two examples, which illustrate the significance and reality of the process of producing maps from databases. The first is the Topographical Database, which together with the military VMap database exemplifies broad application of database technologies in Polish geodesy and cartographic services. In both cases a typical GIS database with data recorded in a relative database is at the input of the map production process. A system elaborated and used in PPWK (Polish Cartographic Publishing House) is another example of a large scale application of a GIS database. At the basis of the system there is a relational database managed from the level of ArcGIS software and a number of additional original applications using their own GIS Navigo components. The article suggests that cartographic skill should nowadays be accompanied with a basic knowledge of IT and GIS technology. At the same time a cartographer takes on a new role - of the one who defines and cooperates during the process of database creation, so that its structure ensures a correct cartographic interpretation of the data, using various media and cartographic presentation methods.
