Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the degree of adhesion and hydrophobicity of some strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with proven antagonistic properties against pathogenic bacteria. Studies were performed using-LAB strains isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of calves and piglets. These strains exhibited an antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains of Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli. Cell adhesiveness was examined in relation to the porcine and bovine mucin. Our analyses had shown that the tested microorganisms demonstrated a degree of adhesion in the range of 32.00-40.00% for strains isolated from calves, and 34.00-40.00% for strains isolated from pigs. The hydrophobicity of tested bacteria was in the range of 31.00%-44.00% for strains isolated from pigs, and 26.00%-42.00% for strains obtained from calves. The best mucin adhesion ability was found for bacterial strains belonging to the Enterococcus genus isolated from calves. Taking into account porcine isolates, the best adhesion was observed for the Leuconostoc bacterial strains. Among tested strains, the highest hydrophobicity, measured in relation to hexadecane, was recorded for the bacterial strains belonging to the Leuconostoc sp. isolated from piglets and a of Lactobacillus sp. bacterial strain isolated from calves.

Opis:
A protein kinase of 57 kDa, able to phosphorylate tyrosine in synthetic substrates pol(Glu4,Tyr1) and a fragment of Src tyrosine kinase, was isolated and partly purified from maize seedlings (Zea mays). The protein kinase was able to phosphorylate exogenous proteins: enolase, caseins, histones and myelin basic protein. Amino acid analysis of phosphorylated casein and enolase, as well as of phosphorylated endogenous proteins, showed that both Tyr and Ser residues were phosphorylated. Phosphotyrosine was also immunodetected in the 57 kDa protein fraction. In the protein fraction there are present 57 kDa protein kinase and enolase. This co-purification suggests that enolase can be an endogenous substrate of the kinase. The two proteins could be resolved by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Specific inhibitors of typical protein-tyrosine kinases had essentially no effect on the activity of the maize enzyme. Staurosporine, a nonspecific inhibitor of protein kinases, effectively inhibited the 57 kDa protein kinase. Also, poly L-lysine and heparin inhibited tyrosine phosphorylation by 57 kDa maize protein kinase. The substrate and inhibitor specificities of the 57 kDa maize protein kinase phosphorylating tyrosine indicate that it is a novel plant dual-specificity protein kinase.

Opis:
The study evaluated the effectiveness of air biofiltration in rendering plants. The biofilter material comprised compost soil (40%) and peat (40%) mixed up with coconut fiber (medium A) and oak bark (medium B). During biofiltration average VOCs reduction reached 88.4% for medium A and 89.7% for medium B. A positive relationship of aldehyde reduction from material humidity (r = 0.502; α<0.05) was also noted. Other biomaterial parameters did not affect the treatment efficiency.
