The reviewed work describes issues of language contact, sociolinguistics, etymology and terminology. The volume concerns widely understood Slavic studies in both diachronic and synchronic aspects, with a special emphasis on the Belarusian language.

    The Japanese-Slovene dictionary jaSlo: its development, enhancement and useThe paper presents the on-line Japanese-Slovene dictionary jaSlo, in particular the ways in which it has been used, and how it has been extended with examples mined from a parallel corpus. The paper first describes jaSlo and the structure of its dictionary entry, its Web interface for searching, and an analysis of the access logs. The use of jaSlo in the context of the Japanese reading-support tool Reading Tutor is described next, again followed by an analysis of the access logs. Also discussed is the manner in which usage examples were added to the dictionary, and an evaluation of their usefulness. The paper concludes with directions for further work.

    Contemporary Contrastive Studies of Polish, Bulgarian and Russian Neologisms versus Language CorporaIn the field of Slavonic linguistics contrastive studies of neologisms occupy little place, the newest words are insufficiently described and classified. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the need for contrastive description of the newest lexis and checking exclusively one of many possibilities of obtaining Polish, Bulgarian and Russian neologisms. Language corpora, as this possibility is in question, are not the only source from which the author obtains her research material, yet a growing interest in corpora has inspired her to also use this method. The author wants to show the reader to what degree language corpora can help in building the thesaurus of Polish, Bulgarian and Russian neologisms. Making an attempt to confront a collection of neologisms of contemporary Polish, Bulgarian and Russian language, the author points out the need to standardize the description (identical for each of the analysed languages), which she intends to propose in another publications on neologisms in Polish, Bulgarian and Russian language. The application of contrastive method to three different but related languages from the Slavonic group will help, in her opinion, to discover more mechanisms of new words coming into existence and examine the newest derivative processes and their productivity.

    Mental and emotional verbs in semantic and syntactic descriptionThe main issue of this article concerns relations between the semantic plane of the sentence, which is presented by means of notions of predicate argument structure, and the plane of formal realisation of this structure. The existing attitudes to the studied verb classes are presented. Then rules governing the model of description used are specified (the article has been written within an elaborate scientific grant concerning Bulgarian, Polish and Russian). Obligatory semantic features of both classes are pointed out, followed by an elaboration on the scope of analysis of semantic and syntactic phenomena. This scope is determined by basic semantic sentence categories on which comparative, including contrastive, research is based. Drawing on examples of particular units studied, I then discuss the effectiveness of the analysis which enables comparing differences between sets of sentence structures allowable for each class studied. Those differences stem from semantic differences typical of those classes. Czasowniki mentalne i czasowniki emocji w opisie semantyczno-syntaktycznymTematyka artykułu dotyczy relacji między płaszczyzną semantyczną zdania, ujętą w terminach struktury predykatowo-argumentowej, a płaszczyzną realizacji formalnej tej struktury. Zarysowane zostały dotychczasowe podejścia do opisu badanych klas czasowników oraz sprecyzowano ustalenia dotyczące zastosowanego w artykule modelu opisu (artykuł powstał w związku z realizacją obszernego grantu dotyczącego języka bułgarskiego, polskiego i rosyjskiego). Wskazano obligatoryjne dla obu klas cechy semantyczne oraz scharakteryzowano zakres analizy zjawisk semantyczno-składniowych. Zakres ten wyznaczają podstawowe semantyczne kategorie zdaniowe, których badanie stanowi podstawę dla porównań, także porównań konfrontatywnych. Zaprezentowane zostały przykłady opracowania wybranych jednostek oraz wskazana skuteczność analizy, która pozwala ukazać różnice między zbiorami dopuszczalnych dla każdej z badanych klas struktur zdaniowych. Różnice te wynikają z charakteryzujących te klasy różnic semantycznych.

    The aim of this article was to investigate the status of the Old Church Slavonic language in the context of today’s academic didactics, especially in Slavic studies. The research aimed to test two hypotheses: (a) an Old Church Slavonic course is useful in the teaching of modern Slavic languages, (b) students of Slavic studies can see the practical dimension of a course in this language and the links between Old Church Slavonic and other Slavic languages. In the course of the analysis, both hypotheses were confirmed: it was proven that the Old Church Slavonic language course can have a practical application, and for most students this aspect of the course is important. The results of the study can be used to improve the course on the grammar of Old Church Slavonic: from the revision of the syllabus entries to specific exercises in classes with students.
    Celem artykułu było zbadanie statusu języka staro-cerkiewno-słowiańskiego w kontekście dzisiejszej dydaktyki akademickiej, szczególnie slawistycznej. Badania miały na celu sprawdzenie dwóch hipotez: a) kurs języka staro-cerkiewno-słowiańskiego jest przydatny w nauczaniu współczesnych języków słowiańskich, b) studenci studiów slawistycznych dostrzegają praktyczny wymiar kursu tego języka oraz powiązania języka staro-cerkiewno-słowiańskiego z innymi językami słowiańskimi. W toku analizy potwierdzone zostały obie hipotezy: udowodniono, że kurs języka staro-cerkiewno-słowiańskiego może mieć praktyczne zastosowanie, a dla większości studentów ten aspekt zajęć jest istotny. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań mogą zostać wykorzystane do udoskonalenia kursu z gramatyki języka staro-cerkiewno-słowiańskiego: począwszy od korekty zapisów w sylabusach, aż po konkretne ćwiczenia w ramach zajęć ze studentami.

    On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of the Ukrainian linguist G. Y. Shevelov, this article attempts to evaluate his contribution to historical-comparative linguistics. Commenting on his pivotal work A Prehistory of Slavic: The Historical Phonology of Common Slavic (1964/1965), we mainly focus on how Shevelov understood the role of language contact in the development of languages in general and in the phonological development of Common Slavic in particular. His approach is analyzed with the help of our concept of paradigms of historical-comparative linguistics, working with the conventionalist, revisionist, and revolutionary paradigms.  
    Z okazji 20. rocznicy śmierci ukraińskiego językoznawcy Jurija Szewelowa niniejszy artykuł podejmuje próbę oceny jego wkładu w językoznawstwo historyczno-porównawcze. Komentując jego kluczowe dzieło A Prehistory of Slavic: The Historical Phonology of Common Slavic (1964/1965), skupiamy się głównie na tym, jak Szewelow rozumiał rolę kontaktu językowego w rozwoju języków w ogóle, a w rozwoju fonologicznym języka prasłowiańskiego w szczególności. Jego podejście jest analizowane za pomocą naszej koncepcji językoznawstwa historyczno-porównawczego, która obejmuje paradygmaty: konwencjonalistyczny, rewizjonistyczny i rewolucyjny w języku.

    Form, its meaning, and dictionary entriesAs we know, a language form is a unit which plays a specific form in the language, e.g. a semantic or syntactical one. We establish the function of a form based on its use (occurrence), i.e. its relation with the meanings of other forms in speech or in a text. The meaning of a form is the value of its function. In the traditional grammar, form is opposed to its meaning. However, various grammar schools have big problems with distinguishingbetween a form and its function. For example, the present tense form has a number of basic temporal meanings in Bulgarian as well as in Polish and Russian, and in none of those languages this is only the present time, (see past, future and habituality expressed using the present tense form). It is a big mistake not to distinguish between the meanings of article in article languages. For example, in Bulgarian the same form of article canexpress both uniqueness and universality (or, respectively: definiteness and indefiniteness). In the quoted book (Koseska-Toszewa 1982), I put forward a hypothesis on the development of the meaning of Bulgarian article. In my opinion, initially the article expressed uniqueness of an element (object), and then started to express also uniqueness of a set, which later, due to equalling two completely different semantically-logical structures, i.e. structures with universal and unique quantification, lead to a homonymy and to the article expressing also universality, i.e. indefiniteness. Similarly in English, French, Rumanian or Albanian, where the same form of article can express either uniqueness or universality. This proves that the above homonymy is of a general rather than typological (e.g. Balkan) character. Naturally, in the above languages the definite article form can also express uniqueness of an object or a set, so it also expresses definiteness. Ambiguity of the definite article form is a phenomenon exceeding the area of Balkan languages, and the only Balkanism is the position of the article - speaking more precisely,its postpositiveness (postpositive position). However, that position gives us no right to treat it differently than the English or French article. In Bulgarian, Rumanian and Albanian the postpositive article is written together with the name its concerns, but it is neither a unit belonging to the root of the word nor the ending of the word.The above observations, based first of all on the semantically-logical aspects of the definiteness category, have been confirmed by the language material from the Suprasl Code, where Bulgarian article does not occur in universally quantified nominal structures, but in uniquely quantified nominal expressions, denoting satisfaction of the predicate either by one element of the sentence or by the whole set treated as the only one.It is worth stressing that distinguishing between the form and its meaning in comparing the material 6 languages belonging to three different groups of Slavic languages (as is the case in the MONDILEX Project) will allow us to avoid numeorus substantiva mistakes and erroneous conclusions. Hence dictionary entries should be verified and made uniform in that respect before they are “digitalized”... Distinction between the form and its meaning in a dictionary entry is fully possible, as shown by works of Z. Saloni (2002) and A.Przepiórkowski (2008).

    This article deals with the development and use of linguistic terminology of a minority language in the context of bilingualism. Under this aspect, an overview is provided over the development and use of Upper Sorbian linguistic terminology past and present. Only recently, a Sorbian-language passage on the orthography of this tongue at the end of the 17th century was discovered. This establishes the oldest linguistic text in Upper Sorbian so far identified. As far as is known, the first two linguistic termini used were introduced by Z. Běrlink in his treaty of the Upper Sorbian orthography (1689), that is samohłósny ‘vowels’ and sobuhłósny ‘consonants’. Until the 19th century, grammars of Upper Sorbian were written in German and Latin, which means that the use of linguistic termini in this tongue was mostly restricted to their designating function and were in most cases equivalents of the lexical itmes ‘vowel’ and ‘consonant’. This article also deals with varying current questions of the existing linguistic terminology, for example, its stability, its currency and its applicability. In this context, the contribution to the informationquestion system of the Slavic linguistic internet forum iSybislaw and its developing dictionary of Slavic linguistic keywords is also described.
