Opis:
Noctiluca scintillans is an important member of the mesozooplankton in terms of biomass and production in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The densities and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) contents of N. scintillans cells were measured. Vertical profiles of N. scintillans cellular activity in the coastal water were determined and the ATP contents were high at middle layers, with a maximum depth of 10 m. ATP contents were low in the surface and lower layers. These results suggest that active N. scintillans cells in subsurface layers with low density play an important role in the coastal ecosystem, and high-density cells in the surface water are not active.

Opis:
Several sea and laboratory experiments have been carried out to detect and determine the fluorescence characteristics of seawater and its natural fluorescing components and to analyse the influence of oil in the surface water layer on the lidar-induced return signal. The aim of the laboratory investigations was to create a database of different natural water types and of water polluted with Petrobaltic oil. During the r/v ‘Oceania’ cruise in the southern Baltic Sea two lidar methods were applied simultaneously to detect and analyse the influence of the fluorescence emission of oil on the fluorescence spectrum of seawater. Detection of oil pollution can be used to correct the fluorescent factors of fluorescing components on the basis of natural seawater fluorescence spectra.

Measurement of pCO2 in highly dynamic coastal zones such as the southern Baltic Sea presents many challenges. In this study, we designed a system to measure pCO2 and then validated it in a series of laboratory and seagoing tests. The fast response time of the system was shown to provide a better resolution of CO2 system gradients. In the open waters of the Baltic Sea, the accuracy of the pCO2 measurements (±1.3 μatm) met the requirements of the ICOS (±2.0 μatm). In the coastal zone, there was less consistency between pCO2, DIC and pH measurements, suggesting the need to redefine the quality assurance and control requirements for the measurement of pCO2 in dynamic regions.

Six bacterial strains isolated from the surface water of the southern Baltic Sea were described on the basis of their morphological, physiological and biochemical features, and were classified on the basis of 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Comparative analyses of the 16S rDNA sequences of five of the six bacterial strains examined displayed a ≥98% similarity to the sequences available in the NCBI GenBank. The 16S rDNA sequence of strain 2 shared only a 96% similarity with other published sequences, which suggests that this is a new, hitherto unknown species. The isolated heterotrophic bacteria belong to the families Bacillaceae (strain 1), Flexibacteriaceae (strain 2), Sphingomonadaceae (strains 3, 5), Micrococcaceae (strain 4) and Aurantimonadaceae (strain 6). This is the first study in which the polyphasic approach has been applied to the identification of heterotrophic bacteria from the brackish waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk and Gdańsk Deep.

Opis:
The standard exponential model for CDOM absorption has been applied to data from diverse waters. Absorption at 440 nm (ag440) ranged between close to zero and 10 m−1, and the slope oft he semilogarithmic absorption spectrum over a minimum range of400 to 440 nm (s440) ranged between <0.01 and 0.04 nm−1. No relationship was found between ag440 or s440 and salinity. Except in the southern Baltic, s440 was found to have a broad distribution (0.0165 ± 0.0035), suggesting that it should be introduced as an additional variable in bio-optical models when ag440 is large. An alternative model for CDOM absorption was applied to available high quality UV-visible absorption spectra from the WisGla river (Poland). This model assumes that the CDOM absorption spectrum comprises distinct Gaussian absorption bands in the UV, similar to those ofb enzene. Five bands were fit to the data. The mean central energy ofal l bands was higher in early summer (E ∼7.2, 6.6, 6.4, 6.2 and 5.5 eV or 172, 188, 194, 200 and 226 nm) than in winter. The higher energy bands were found to decay in both height and width with increasing salinity, while lower energy bands broadened with increasing salinity. s440 was found to be correlated with shape parameters of the bands centred at 6.4 and 5.5 eV. While the exponential model is convenient for optical modelling and remote sensing applications, these results suggest that the Gaussian model offers a deeper understanding ofc hemical interactions affecting CDOM molecular structure.

Space-time variations in chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations in the surface water of upwelling regions along the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea were analysed. Carried out between 1998 and 2002 in the warmer season (from April till October), the measurements were targeted mainly at the Hel upwelling. Satellite-derived sea surface temperature (AVHRR) and Chl a data (SeaWiFS) were used. Generally speaking, the Chl a concentration increased in the upwelling plume, except along the Hel Peninsula, where two scenarios took place: a reduction in Chl a concentration in spring and an increase in autumn.

Phytoplankton community, diatom to dinoflagellate ratio and pigment composition in surface waters with nutrient data from April 2013 to March 2014 were monitored in the south-eastern (SE) Black Sea using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and microscopic analyses. Microscopic examination revealed a total of 71 species that consist of dinoflagellate (58%), diatoms (25%) and other groups (17%). Microscopy and HPLC-based pigment analyses revealed almost similar results which suggest that the phytoplankton community is mainly composed of diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophores. Fucoxanthin (mean 0.35 ± 019 μg L−1), peridinin (mean 0.18 ± 0.14 μg L−1) and 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (mean 0.24 ± 0.15 μg L−1) are prominent pigments which showed significant correlation with Diatom-C (r2 = 0.63–0.71, p < 0.05), Dinoflagellate-C (r2 = 0.49–0.80, p < 0.05) and Coccolithophore-C (r2 = 0.72–0.82, p < 0.05), respectively. Mean carbon biomass of diatoms (36.50 ± 9.72 μg L−1) was higher than that of dinoflagellates (33.32 ± 9.05 μg L−1). Significant differences were also observed in nutrient ratio (N:P and Si:N) (One-way ANOVA, p < 0.05). Results illustrate that HPLC-based pigment approach can be used for taxonomic characterisation of phytoplankton groups in the SE Black Sea. Moreover, relatively high dinoflagellate species dominancy and significant correlations between Phyto-C and marker pigments indicate that phytoplankton community composition is shifting towards much smaller groups in SE coasts of the Black Sea.

Phytoplankton samples collected from the Northern Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal, northern Arabian Sea, and Dona Paula Bay Goa, west coast of India), were utilized to quantify changes in cell size, cell volume and carbon per cell of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The dataset from the Bay of Bengal also provides inter- and intra-annual variations (April 2008 to March 2010). The variations in cell size and volume were large in regions influenced by the riverine influx or terrigenous inputs. An interregional comparison of commonly available forms (8 species) points out that cell volumes are highest in the North Atlantic and lowest in the Mediterranean. The information provided will be useful in estimation of carbon biomass and biogeochemical studies.

Opis:
The absorption properties of phytoplankton in surface waters of the Baltic Sea and coastal lakes are examined in the context of their relationships with the concentration of the main photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll a. The analysis covers 425 sets of spectra of light absorption coefficients aph(l) and chlorophyll a concentrations Chla measured in 2006—2009 in various waters of the Baltic Sea (open and coastal waters, the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Pomeranian Bay, river mouths and the Szczecin Lagoon), as well as in three lakes in Pomerania, Poland (Obłęskie, Łebsko and Chotkowskie). In these waters the specific (i.e. normalized with respect to Chla) light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton aph *(l) varies over wide ranges, which differ according to wavelength. For example, aph *(440) takes values from 0.014 to 0.124 mg1 m2, but aph *(675) from 0.008 to 0.067 mg1 m2, whereby Chla ranges from 0.8 to 120 mg m3. From this analysis a mathematical description has been produced of the specific light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton aph *(l), based on which the dynamics of its variability in these waters and the absorption spectra in the 400—700 nm interval can be reconstructed with a low level of uncertainty (arithmetic statistical error: 4.09—10.21%, systematic error: 29.63—51.37%). The relationships derived here are applicable in local remote sensing algorithms used for monitoring the Baltic Sea and coastal lakes and can substantially improve the accuracy of the remotely determined optical and biogeochemical characteristics of these waters.

This work presents a one-dimensional simulation of the seasonal changes in CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The results of the model were constrained using data from observations, which improved the model’s ability to estimate nitrogen fixation in the central Baltic Sea and allowed the impact of nitrogen fixation on the ecological state of the Baltic Sea to be studied. The model used here is the public domain water-column model GOTM (General Ocean Turbulence Model), which in this study was coupled with a modifed Baltic Sea ecosystem model, ERGOM (The Baltic Sea Research Institute’s ecosystem model). To estimate nitrogen fixation rates in the Gotland Sea, the ERGOM model was modified by including an additional cyanobacteria group able to fix nitrogen from March to June. Furthermore, the model was extended by a simple CO2 cycle. Variable C:P and N:P ratios, controlled by phosphate concentrations in ambient water, were used to represent cyanobacteria, detritus and sediment detritus. This approach improved the model’s ability to reproduce sea-surface phosphate and pCO2 dynamics. The resulting nitrogen fixation rates in 2005 for the two simulations, with and without the additional cyanobacteria group, were 259 and 278 mmol N m−2 year−1 respectively.

The aim of the study was to determine the trophic state of the Vistula Lagoon in 2007–2009. The analysis of various trophic state indices, abiotic parameters and different water classifications indicated the eutrophy and even advanced hypereutrophy of the lagoon waters. The composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton likewise reflect the eutrophic nature of this water body. For this lagoon, Reynold’s functional groups of phytoplankton were used as an indicator of eutrophication for the first time. The dominant phytoplankton organisms in the surface waters belong to 8 functional groups: S1, X1, F, J, K, H1, LO, M. Some key concepts of the EU Water Framework Directive were implemented in this study.
