Opis:
The presence of infragravity waves in nearshore regions can be sought in the records of both water levels and wave-driven longshore currents. For this reason, time series of such currents in close proximity to the shoreline were analysed using Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA). Simultaneously, the results obtained with this method were confronted with the output of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), which had previously been applied to this data. The records of longshore currents were collected on a daily basis during field experiments in the autumns of 2002 and 2003 with sampling rates of 3 Hz and 0.5 Hz. This produced a large data set that allowed for the use of an advanced signal processing technique, capable of extracting patterns characteristic of low-, medium- and high-frequency bands. It provided similar evidence to that produced by DWT for the existence of infragravity waves along a dissipative coast with multiple bars. The study also demonstrated the utility of SSA for studies on coastal hydrodynamics. It also showed up the better user-friendliness of DWT in terms of pattern extraction and interpretation. On the other hand, SSA demonstrated a higher precision of pattern extraction once the DWT output was known, which is a manifestation of the synergy of the two methods when applied jointly.

Opis:
Traditionally, upwelling-related studies in the Baltic Sea have been limited to the period from May to September. Based on wintertime in situ measurements at two nearshore locations in the Gulf of Finland, clear evidence of winter “warm” upwelling events was detected and analysed. The process was very common. At a 10 m deep location, upwelling caused water temperature (T) to switch from 0—1 to 4—5°C and salinity (S) to switch from 4.5 to 6 PSU; at 20 m depth it caused a switch in T between 1 and 2—4°C and in S between 5.5 and 6.8 PSU. Differently from summer upwelling, T and S variations were positively correlated to each other. Salinity variations remained roughly the same throughout the winter, whereas T differences were higher in winter onset, then decreased to ca. 1°C, and increased again after the process reversed to summer-type upwelling in April—May. Based on analysis of SatBaltyk (January to March) sea surface temperature and salinity product imagery, winter upwelling occurrence along the North Estonian coast was 21—28% over 2010—2021, and slightly less along the Finnish coast. Regarding S variations, winter upwelling occurred with roughly similar frequencies and impacts in the northern and southern parts of the gulf. However, the impacts on T and sea ice conditions were highly asymmetrical. Upwelling kept the Estonian coast ice-free longer and water temperatures slightly higher than at the Finnish coast. Winter upwelling as a phenomenon has long been ignored and therefore probably underestimated.

Opis:
The response of phytoplankton community to the co-existing events of coastal upwelling and mud banks in the nearshore waters of Alappuzha (15 m depth), located in the southwest coast of India from April to November 2016, is described based on size-fractionated phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a), primary production and community composition. The study region exhibited well-distinct spatio-temporal hydrological changes because of the influence of wind-driven coastal upwelling, prevalent during the southwest monsoon (SWM) period. However, the formation of mud banks, in addition to coastal upwelling, was observed at station M2, which facilitated the substantial increase of water column turbidity and inorganic nutrients (ammonium, phosphate, and silicate) during and after the peak SWM period compared to the non-mud bank reference stations (M1 and M3). The prevailing hydrological changes were complemented the corresponding phytoplankton productivity patterns, in which profound domination of nanophytoplankton (2—20 μm) chlorophyll a and primary production was observed throughout the study region, irrespective of seasons. The SIMPER analysis, based on phytoplankton (mostly >20 μm) species composition data (microscopy), revealed the formation of certain characterizing species, mainly comprised of diatoms and dinoflagellates. The consistent predominance of the nanophytoplankton, established under variable hydrological scenarios, showed that the inorganic nutrient (specifically ammonium) availability was instrumental in defining the widespread growth of nanophytoplankton community compared to the prevailing light levels. The present study thus revealed that even the small-sized phytoplankton community could survive in the nutrient-enriched coastal waters, characterised by the co-existing upwelling and mud banks.

Opis:
The study, carried out in 2003 and 2006 at the Lubiatowo Coastal Research Station (Poland), located on the non-tidal southern Baltic coast (tidal range < 0.06 m), focused on larger rhythmic forms (mega-cusps) with wavelengths in the interval 500 m > Lc > 20 m. Statistical analyses of detailed shoreline configurations were performed mostly with the Discrete Wavelet Transform method (DWT). The beach is composed of fine sand with grain diameter D50 ≈ 0.22 mm, which produces 4 longshore sandbars and a gently sloping seabed with β = 0.015. The analysis confirms the key role of bars in hydro- and morphodynamic surf zone processes. The hypothesis was therefore set up that, in a surf zone with multiple bars, the bars and mega-scale shoreline rhythmic forms form one integrated physical system; experimental evidence to substantiate this hypothesis was also sought. In such a system not only do self-regulation processes include swash zone phenomena, they also incorporate processes in offshore surf zone locations. The longshore dimensions of large cusps are thus related to the distances between periodically active large bed forms (bars). The spatial dimension of bar system activity (number of active bars) depends, at a given time scale, on the associated hydrodynamic conditions. It was assumed that such a time scale could include either the development and duration of a storm, or a period of stable, yet distinct waves, capable of remodelling the beach configuration. The indentation to wavelength ratio of mega-cusps for the studied non-tidal dissipative environment may be one order of magnitude greater than for mesotidal, reflective beaches.

Opis:
Using objectively analysed hydrographic data, currents have been calculated off the Egyptian Mediterranean coast at the surface and at 30, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 m depths for the four seasons. The surface circulation is dominated by an anticyclonic circulation off Salum Bay in winter, spring and summer. In nearshore areas, the current flows eastwards at the shallower levels but westwards at the deeper levels. Off the Nile Delta, the current is almost eastward with a higher velocity in summer and autumn, while in spring it is very weak. Off the area between Port Said and Rafah, there is a clear cyclonic circulation appearing in all seasons except winter. At 50 and 75 m depth, the velocity of the circulation is weak. At 100 m depth, the circulation that appeared between Matruh and Alamen in summer decreases in area and magnitude at the former depths. At 200 and 300 m in winter, the current velocity is quite low. In spring the current flows southwards off the area between Rafah and Port Said. In summer, the current off the area between Port Said and Rafah is quite strong and flows to the south. The situation in autumn is quite similar to that in summer, except in the eastern area, where the current is a westward one.
