Opis:
The preservation status of the mollusc shell accumulation of sandy barriers at the Amvrakikos Gulf lagoon complex was studied. Taphonomic shell analysis of dead mollusc depositions was undertaken in the summer of 2016 at Amvrakikos lagoon complex within the Tsoukalio and Logarou sandy barriers, which showed significant differences among the major abundant bivalve species of Cerastoderma glaucum and Polititapes aureus. Both hydrodynamic transport and differential exposure to environmental conditions differ among the accumulated shells depositions of the lagoonal sandy barriers. The heavier and more durable shells of C. glaucum are frequently found concentrated at the Tsoukalio lagoon accumulations and show a higher intensity of fragmentation whereas at Logarou lagoon the bioerosion and abrasion is more intense. On the other hand, the lighter, thinner, and thus more fragile shells of P. aureus show higher concentration and intensity of fragmentation and bioerosion at Logarou lagoon sandy barriers. The continuous deposition of shells at Tsoukalio lagoonal sandy barriers, contrary to the longterm deposition at Logarou lagoon, explains the different types of accumulations among the lagoons which are attributed to the geomorphology of the sandy shores as well as the morphological characteristics of the different shells.

Opis:
A primary production model for the Barents Sea shows a hot spot of organic carbon settlement to the sea bed over 100 km long, a shallow pile of highly permeable sediments (mainly large Balanus, Mya and Pecten shell fragments over 1 cm in size) of glacial origin. Hydrodynamic flow models suggest an intensive, deep flow of near-bottom waters into the sediment. Depending on wave height, water in shallow (30 m depth) places may percolate more than 5 m into the sediment. During 10 days of stormy weather as much as 4 to 8 kg wet weight pelagic biomass can be processed per square metre through this extremely permeable sediment. Analogous processes known in coastal waters lead to intense biocatalytic phenomena and metabolism of organic carbon within the seabed, estimated here as more intense than surface consumption. Spitsbergenbanken may be acting as a huge sink for organic carbon and an important source of nutrients in one of the most productive areas of the North Atlantic.

Zooplankton composition and abundance were investigated seasonally at ten sites in Lake Timsah and the adjacent, connected western lagoon in relation to the physicochemical conditions. A total of 42 taxa (including larval stages) were identified, among them 21 species of copepods, 6 rotifers, 5 cladocerans, 1 chaetognath and 1 urochordate. Copepods represented the predominant component (77.7% of the total community), followed by rotifers, molluscs, cladocerans and (9.2, 4.7 and 3.9% respectively), while other groups collectively formed about 4.5% of the total zooplankton population. Summer was the most productive season with an average count of 40 864 individuals m−3. The dominant copepod species were Paracalanus crassirostris and Oithona nana representing 28.3 and 24.3% of the total zooplankton respectively. The total zooplankton count, including copepods, and its dominant species showed significant positive correlations with temperature, pH and total phytoplankton density. However, negative correlations were detected between densities of rotifers, and salinity and dissolved oxygen.
