    The purpose of this paper is twofold: to identify an ‘enigmatic man’ represented on the right side of the Banganarti Anastasis painting as Abel and to exclude the identification of the figure as ‘Moses at the Burning Bush’. The ‘enigmatic man’ is young and he holds a stick in his hand, which seems to be the shepherd’s crook. Such an attribute is typical for images of Abel (a younger son of Adam and Eve killed by his brother). The absence of the Manus Dei and sandals makes the identification of the figure as ‘Moses at the Burning Bush’ a bit unlikely. In Banganarti, Abel is set in a separate field, what makes this image unusual. Solitude of Abel brings to mind an apocryphal Ethiopic Book of Enoch. In this text the lonely spirit of Abel cries and awaits for the Resurrection and condemnation of Cain’s offspring. The image from Banganarti allows to state that some apocryphal texts had an impact on Nubian painting and for this reason several murals are unique on the background of Byzantine art.

    The aim of this paper is to present a method that enables identification of Nubian paintings whose tituli have not been preserved or are incomplete. This method is reminiscent of the laborious piecing together of mosaics from scattered and incomplete tesserae. The attributes, vestments or contexts are such tesserae, which taken into consideration together enable the composing of a mosaic, piece by piece. Some interpretations of the paintings were made during excavations, without time for deeper analysis. Identifications created in this way have become so merged with the images, and then repeated frequently, that it was very difficult to change them and introduce a new perspective on already widely accepted opinions. In this article, I have focused on a few select examples that show how one can identify individual paintings, but also how one can fall into the trap of too easy comparisons and attributions. A scholar studying Nubian art has to be cautious as its iconography is sometimes so original that it cannot be easily compared to Byzantine or any other cultural patterns.

    The study of mural painting in ancient Alexandria is still based on images decorating walls of Alexandrian tombs due to the fact that discoveries of painted plaster at archaeological sites in the ancient city are rather scarce and poorly documented. For this reason, the analysis of painted decorations from both public buildings and private houses has to be supported with references to the material from the necropolis. Fragments of mural paintings, unfortunately not in large numbers, were found on the walls of buildings discovered at Polish excavations at Kom el-Dikka. They are mostly decorations of house interiors, both from the Early Roman and Imperial Periods (first–third centuries AD) as well as the Late Antique Period (fifth–sixth centuries AD). Very few remains of painted decoration of public buildings were preserved in several so-called auditoria and in some rooms of Imperial Baths. Rich assemblages of painted plaster pieces were found in debris filling interiors of particular buildings. A common presence of uniform patterns and colours indicates that the majority of the material might have come from a single large edifice located in the vicinity of Kom el-Dikka. The material, which consists of several hundred remains, includes a rich selection of imitation of stone revetment, fragments of ornamental decorations and pieces which come from bigger figural compositions. All this material could be a starting point for an in-depth study of painted decoration of Alexandrian architecture between the first and the sixth centuries AD.

    Excavations in the North-West Church yielded numerous fragments of plain and painted wall plaster, which suggest that the entire interior of the church was plastered, and in large part, decorated with wall paintings. The majority of painted remains were discovered in the martyrion chapel and in the diakonikon. This paper describes the findings and addresses the following questions: to what extent was the church painted; what did the paintings represent; were these paintings aniconic; what are the characteristic features of the technique of execution of these paintings; do these paintings belong to a single phase of decoration of the church?

    The field research conducted in Paphos in the framework of a joint project of the Université d’Avignon and the University of Warsaw focuses on the southern part of Fabrika hill with the aim to understand its role in the urban life of ancient Nea Paphos. Two seasons of the fieldwork (2018–2019) yielded evidence for the arrangement and chronology of a temple site of the Hellenistic and early Roman period. A preliminary exploration of underground chambers strongly suggests that they may have been a part of the same sacred area as the temple. Moreover, several burials as well as some walls and floors testify to the use of the site during the Byzantine and Medieval period.

    In one of the domestic rooms attached to the North-West Church at Hippos (Sussita), at least three ceramic pithoi were found, all of them in secondary use, possibly for the processing (storing?) of lime. One of them bore an inscription in Greek, scratched into its surface, which turned out to be an acclamation for the circus faction of the Blues. This interesting addition to the corpus of the factions’ inscriptions from Syro-Palestine is also lending the dating to the original period of the pithos’ use, which cannot be later than the Islamic conquest of the region in AD 636/638.
