    An integral part in the nation-building processes unfolding in the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy was the formation of specific elite segments that could shepherd various ethnic or confessional communities towards modernity or help to preserve their national existence in the face of de-nationalising policies. Over time, the establishment of a legal elite – graduates of law academies and faculties – assumed an increasingly important role, especially for national minorities. The present paper attempts to tally the results of the collective endeavour on the part of the Romanians in Dualist Hungary to forge this elite segment by focusing on the swansong moment of Romanian petitioning, the Memorandum trial of 1894. It examines the impromptu selection of local members of the Romanian legal elite in Hungary, occasioned by the need to defend the leadership of the Romanian national movement in the courtroom, and discusses their educational and professional backgrounds. It also shines a light on the contrary positions taken by other members of the national leadership – also a segment of this legal elite – and the ensuing conflicts between and among the national leadership as both groups tried in their own way to defend the Romanian national movement.

    Niniejszy artykuł to próba wyjaśnienia, czy program litewskiego ruchu narodowego w końcu XIX i na początku XX w. rzeczywiście zawierał alternatywę dla modelu społeczeństwa/państwa narodowego, jak często twierdzi historiografia litewska. Prowadzone badania pokazują, że litewski ruch narodowy, podobnie jak większość etnonacjonalizmów w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej, był zorientowany na model państwa narodowego.The present article seeks to explain whether the programme of the Lithuanian national movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century included an alternative to the model of nation state, as has often been argued in the Lithuanian literature on the subject. Research reveals that the Lithuanian national movement, like a majority of ethnic nationalisms in Central and Eastern Europe, was oriented towards the model of thenation-state.

    W artykule podjęto próbę krytycznej oceny tezy funkcjonującej w historiografii litewskiej, a częściowo także polskiej, że idea unii obu państw została wyeliminowana z projektów litewskiego ruchu narodowego ukształtowanych w końcu XIX i na początku XX w. Wyniki analizy ukazują potrzebę badań koncepcji federalizmu litewskiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii wpływu na nią unii polsko-litewskiej.
    The article offers a critical assessment of the deeply entrenched view in Lithuanian and Polish historiography that the idea of the (Lublin) Union was erased from the Lithuanian statehood projects created within the Lithuanian national movement in the late nineteenth–early twentieth centuries. Summarising the critical assessments made against this idea, several theses were formulated based on which further research could be conducted that could explain the effects of the Union on the formation and development of “Lithuanian federalism”.

Ewolucja stosunku Bocheńskiego do PRON-u była wyrazem jego wzrastającego rozczarowania działaniami władzy w tym czasie. Aleksander Bocheński’s activity in the Patriotic Movement for National Rebirth was an expression of his political concepts in the eighties. They were meant as the apology of policy conducted by Gen. Jaruzelski’s team and emphasised the consequences of geo-political situation of Poland. An evolution of Bocheński’s attitude towards the Movement was provoked by his disappointment with the government’s actions at that time.

    The following article will discuss Polish national attitudes among peasants in Eastern Galicia in the light of memoirs of peasant youth that the sociologist Józef Chałasiński collected in 1938 and analysed in his seminal work Młode pokolenie chłopów [The young generation of peasants]. It will start with a discussion of differences in processes of the integration of peasants into the Polish nation in Western and Eastern Galicia until WWI. The article will argue that Western Galician peasants, represented in the Polish peasant parties, embraced the idea of being the ‘pillars of Polishness’ while for Roman Catholic or Polish speaking peasants in Eastern Galicia that remained rather an ascription by nationalist circles of the Polish intelligentsia. This condition, as Józef Chałasiński’s collection of memoirs show, does not seem to have changed much during the interwar period.

    W artykule scharakteryzowano stosunek największych polskich central związkowych do Obozu Zjednoczenia Narodowego. Zróżnicowane opinie na temat OZN, wyrażane w latach 1937–1939 przez przedstawicieli organizacji związkowych, a także podejmowane w związku z tym działania były w dużej mierze uwarunkowane nastawieniem ideowym poszczególnych środowisk. Wynikały też z zaszłości historycznych i powiązań niektórych central z partiami politycznymi. Były również konsekwencją rywalizacji o prymat w ruchu zawodowym.
    The article characterises the attitude of the largest Polish trade union centres towards the Camp of National Unity (Polish: Obóz Zjednoczenia Narodowego, OZN). The differing opinions on OZN expressed between 1937 and 1939 by representatives of trade union organisations and the actions taken in their consequences were, to a large extent, conditioned by the ideological stance of individual circles. They also resulted from historical backgrounds and the relations of some headquarters with political parties. They were also a consequence of competition for supremacy in the labour movement.
