The divergence in the structure of the education of men and women in the Polish People’s Republic. Between the state policy and individual educational choices (Summary)In the era of the Polish People’s Republic, the gender divergence in the structure of education grew in parallel with an increase in the number of women who obtained secondary and higher school education. The analysis given in the article supplements our knowledge on the topic with details on the analysis presented here, it is possible to specify two factors which, while linked to the educational policy pursued in communist Poland, stood behind the divergence under discussion. First, vocational schools offered training in trades reserved mainly for men, which led women to opt for high school general education. Second, women’s access to some ‘male’ schools was formally restricted. Women’s educational advantage, which was the result of the policy conducted by the state in the fi eld of education, can thus be regarded as having been an unintentional side effect of the reforms introduced in Poland after the Second World War.

Opis:
Social attitudes toward communism in Poland encompassed the whole spectrum of attitudes, from affirmation, through adaptation, to resistance and dissent. The most developed and institutionalized form of dissent was the opposition movement. Komitet Obrony Robotników (Workers’ Defence Committee), later transformed into the Social Self-Defence Committee ‘KOR’ was a new of type opposition against the communist regime; it created a political alternative and new methods of system contestation, which were followed by other groups in the democratic opposition in the 1970s. The main features of the KOR opposition model are: openness, acting without violence, absence of hierarchic organization, decentralization, legalism, solidarity, specified social objectives, political self-limitation, ethical radicalism, pluralism and civic virtue.

The article is a reconstruction of the most important strands in the historiography devoted to the political activity of the laity after 1945, especially the period between 1945 and 1948. The author first discusses pre-1989 literature and then the most recent studies devoted to political Catholicism in Poland. In the main part of the article he presents three strands in historiography: research into the Labour Party, research into groups associated with Catholic socio-political weeklies, and biographies and syntheses of the history of the Catholics and the Church.

In 1969 an interdisciplinary committee for long-term forecasting was created at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Together with the central planning authorities, statistical offices and every branch of government it constituted a system of prognostication which remained legally in place between 1971 and 1976. This article regards prognostication as an institutionalized experiment based on one of the key myths of modernity – that future events can be known and shaped. The genealogy of long-term forecasts in Poland dates back to pre-war experiences with state planning and transnational transfers of knowledge since 1956. After an outline of its pre-history, this article describes the construction and programmatic ideas of the prognostic system and asks how its functioning affected participants’ understandings of the future as a political category. Finally, this article makes the case that this state-run prognostication venture resulted in an amplitude of euphoria followed by frustration regarding future knowledge, which can be understood as an indirect but significant cultural symptom of the emerging political and economic crisis in the Polish People’s Republic beginning in 1976.

This article shows how the leaders of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) tried to incorporate the October Revolution into the Polish culture of remembrance. The author concentrates his attention on two round anniversaries (in 1957 and 1967) and describes the limits, zig-zags, and paradoxes of the official politics of memory conducted by the PZPR. He argues that although the Soviet leaders conceived the anniversaries of the October Revolution as a means of strengthening the friendship between the nations, in the case of Poland, they created an opportunity to advance arguments for easing Soviet domination. The author also points out that both the Soviet and Polish cultures of remembrances shared one feature in common: by the late 1960s, the theme of the Second World War started to overshadow all other events from the past, including first and foremost the October Revolution.

The changes that took place in the Polish People’s Republic after World War II were closely monitored by Polish political emigrants in Great Britain. Understandably, special attention was paid to political problems. The author discusses the attitude of the Polish government in exile and the Polish émigré press towards the elections to the People’s Poland Sejm in 1952: i.e. their assessment of the electoral law, the National Front, its programme, candidates to the Sejm, the electoral campaign, and election results. In the closing part of the text, the author comments on the success allegedly achieved by the Ministry of Public Security in that part of the “Cezary” Operation which concerned disinformation of émigré community in the area of electoral propaganda.
Zmiany zachodzące w Polsce Ludowej po II wojnie światowej były bacznie obserwowane przez polskie uchodźstwo polityczne w Wielkiej Brytanii. Szczególną uwagę zwracano na sprawy polityczne. W artykule omówiono stosunek władz RP na obczyźnie oraz prasy emigracyjnej do wyborów do Sejmu PRL w 1952 r.: tzn. jak oceniano prawo wyborcze, Front Narodowy, jego program, kandydatów do sejmu, kampanię wyborczą oraz wyniki wyborów. W końcowej części tekstu skomentowano sukces, jaki rzekomo odniosło Ministerstwo Bezpieczeństwa Publicznego w tej części operacji „Cezary”, która dotyczyła dezinformacji środowisk emigracyjnych w zakresie propagandy wyborczej.

The author outlines the development of the electoral system of the Polish People’s Republic in the 1940s and 50s, and also analyses its singular features in the years when elections to the Sejm were fully controlled by the ruling Polish United Workers’ Party. The final part of the paper is devoted to elections in the 1980s, when this electoral model collapsed, thereby contributing to the disintegration of the communist dictatorship in Poland.

Artykuł zawiera ustalenia dotyczące problemów aprowizacyjnych, w tym przede wszystkim braków mięsa w szerokim kontekście historii politycznej, kulturowej i społecznej Polski w latach 1945–1989. Dokonana została analiza „kwestii mięsnej” w polityce władz komunistycznych (działania zmierzające do ograniczenia popytu, zwiększenia podaży i karania za nadużycia w instytucjach zajmujących się produkcją, dystrybucją i sprzedażą mięsa). Podjęta została próba określenia roli mięsa w życiu polskich rodzin, społecznych reakcji na jego braki (od dowcipów z wątkiem „aprowizacyjnym” do roli braków mięsa w genezie i przebiegu buntów antysystemowych w PRL).
The article presents findings regarding food supply problems, including in particular shortages of meat in a broad contexts of Poland’s political, cultural and social history in 1945–1989. An analysis of the “meat issue” in the policy of the communist authorities was made (measures to reduce demand, increase supply and punish abuse in institutions involved in the production, distribution and sale of meat). An attempt was made to determine the role of meat in the lives of Polish families, social reactions to its deficiencies (from jokes about food supplies to the role of meat shortages in the genesis and course of anti-system rebellions in the Polish People’s Republic).

Artykuł jest próbą ukazania awansu administracyjnego wybranych miast z lat 1975–1998. Cztery z nich otrzymały status ośrodków wojewódzkich mimo faktu, że w momencie desygnacji nie były największe na terenach nowo tworzonych jednostek administracyjnych. W artykule starano się zobrazować skalę rozwoju miast wybranych do roli centrów wojewódzkich i zestawić z sytuacją okolicznych ośrodków, które, oceniając sytuację wedle kryterium demograficznego, można uznać za zaskakująco pominięte.
This article presents the development of selected capitals of provinces between 1975 and 1998. The four described cities were given provincial status, even though, at the time of designation, they were smaller than other cities in the newly created administrative units. The article attempts to illustrate the range of development of cities selected as the voivodeship’s capital and to compare them with the neighbouring cities, which could be considered surprisingly omitted according to the demographic criteria.

This article discusses the moral dimension of history writing in the opposition milieus during the last decade of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). It focuses on the works of two dissident historians who dealt with untold or contested aspects of Polish contemporary history: Krystyna Kersten and Jerzy Holzer. First, the essay describes the narratives about the values and experiences shared in the PRL context by people belonging simultaneously to the intelligentsia, opposition dissidence, and academia (professional historians), with a special emphasis on the discovery and search for the truth under positivistic premises. Secondly, it analyses the counterfactual questions posed by Kersten and Holzer in their bestseller underground books about post-war politics and the trade union Solidarity’s legal period, respectively. The reflections that these two scholars developed about pasts-that-didn’t-take-place provided a complementary ethical component to their discourses concerning decision-making processes and Polish society’s political agency. The idea of losing, the ultimate inevitability of defeat, and the way that defeat was faced in two different moments of Poland’s recent history are tackled by Kersten and Holzer with an educational goal: to explain to readers that, however minute the range of choice is, ethics, together with remembrance, plays an important role in social consciousness and empowerment, and hence can make a crucial difference in the long run.

Artykuł omawia wpływ pracy zawodowej kobiet na stosunki w małżeństwie. Podstawą źródłową analizy są oryginalne pamiętniki konkursowe pochodzące z trzech konkursów z lat 1964, 1965 i 1974. W artykule stawiam tezę, że praca zawodowa, szczególnie związana z wykształceniem i pozycją zawodową, wpływała na podniesienie statusu kobiety w małżeństwie, choć była rozumiana jako drugorzędna. Innym czynnikiem wpływającym na zmianę pozycji kobiety w małżeństwie było upowszechnianie się partnerskiego modelu małżeństwa, co także pokazują omawiane pamiętniki.
The article discusses the impact of women’s work on relations in marriage. The source basis of the study are original personal memoirs written for three competitions organised in 1964, 1965, and 1974. I argue that professional work, especially related to education and professional position, raised the status of women in marriage, even though the women’s employment was regarded as of secondary importance. Another factor changing the role of women in marriage was the popularisation of the partnership model of marriage, which is also mirrored in the analysed.

Przedstawione wydarzenia, informacje oraz etapy działań fanklubu są rozmieszczone chronologicznie.
The following article shows the specific activity of the Beatles Fan Club in Lublin, in difficult realities of the 1980s, and its evolution from a neighbourhood circle of interest to the fan club of international activity. The article outlines not only a general description of the history of the fan club, but also recollections of its members and guests, who participated in meetings of the Beatles’ fans, among others journalists: Jerzy Janiszewski, Hirek Wrona and the author of Beatlemania. Obsession or madness? Marek Szpejankowski. There are also presented numerous fan-club’s members, for example editor Peter Metz, and events, together with a description of fan-club gadgets, all against the backdrop of the realities of the eighties. One of the purposes of the article is to contribute to our knowledge about the life in the Polish People’s Republic as well as open a discussion about the unique cultural phenomenon that under the circumstances of communist Poland should not have come into being. The Fan Club events, information and milestones are arranged in a chronological order.

Artykuł koncentruje się na wpływie polityki inwestycyjnej na konwergencję regionalną w Polsce w latach 1960–1973. Na podstawie oficjalnych statystyk dotyczących regionalnego produktu materialnego netto i brutto oraz struktury zawodowej (sektor materialny/niematerialny) zrekonstruowano poziom PKB dla poszczególnych regionów Polski. Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała brak konwergencji regionalnej zarówno typu sigma, jak i beta. W rezultacie przeprowadzone badanie potwierdziło, że przestrzenna alokacja inwestycji w Polsce okresu rządów Gomułki i Gierka nie sprzyjała polityce konwergencji, a ze względu na inne cechy gospodarki centralnie planowanej spontanicznie wyłaniający się polaryzacyjny model rozwoju również okazał się nieefektywny.
The article focuses on the impact of investment policy on regional convergence in Poland between 1960 and 1973. On the basis of official statistics on the regional net, gross material product, and occupational structure (material/non-material sector), the author reconstructs the level of GDP for individual Polish regions. The analysis revealed a lack of regional convergence of both sigma and beta types. As a result, the study confirmed that the spatial allocation of investment in Poland during the rule of the Gomułka and Gierek governments was not conducive to the convergence policy, and – due to other characteristics of the centrally planned economy – the spontaneously emerging polarised development model also proved ineffective.

Zbigniew Herbert was one of the most outstanding Polish poets of the twentieth century. The article presents an analysis of three monographs devoted to him, written by Joanna Siedlecka, Andrzej Franaszek, and Rafał Żebrowski. The editions of his correspondence and memories of the poet are taken into consideration. Differences in the depiction of Herbert’s biography are shown against the background of disputes about the recent history.

W artykule zestawione zostały dwie książki, będące próbą rozliczenia się polskiego środowiska literackiego ze stalinizmem: Rachunek pamięci pod redakcją Władysława Bieńkowskiego, Heleny Boguszewskiej, Pawła Jasienicy i Jerzego Kornackiego oraz Hańba domowa Jacka Trznadla. W tekście przedstawiono okoliczności powstania obu prac i ich recepcję. Przeanalizowano zamieszczone w nich wypowiedzi pisarzy pod kątem oceny literatury w czasach stalinowskich i ówczesnej atmosfery w środowisku literackim, stosunku do rozliczenia oraz czynników, które decydowały o poparciu dużej części środowiska dla ustroju komunistycznego w tym okresie.
The article compares two books being an attempt of the Polish literary community to settle with Stalinism: Rachunek pamięci (An Examination of Remembrance) under the joint scientific editorship of Władysław Bieńkowski, Helena Boguszewska, Paweł Jasienica, and Jerzy Kornacki; and Jacek Trznadel’s Hańba domowa (Home Disgrace). The study presents the circumstances of the creation of these two books and their reception, together with an analysis of the statements and opinions of writers contained in the text in terms of assessing literature in Stalinist times and the atmosphere in the literary milieu at the time, their attitude to settling accounts with the past and to the factors that determined the support of a large part of the community for the communist system in the period.
