    By the late 1920s a considerable body of eugenic literature in Romanian, Hungarian and German had been produced in Romania, illustrating the growing importance afforded to science and evolutionary theories of human improvement in this country. Engaging with this literature, this article investigates the emergence of a Romanian sub-culture in Transylvania and the Banat, sanctioned through eugenics and biopolitics, and promoted by cultural associations and prominent intellectuals and politicians. In so doing, this article contributes not only to a new appraisal of the relationship between ethnic minorities and majorities in interwar Romania, but also to a new understanding of the ways in which eugenics and biopolitics were harnessed to Romanian narratives of nation-building during the interwar period.

    This article seeks to investigate the problem of modernity in post-war communist Poland (People’s Republic of Poland, Pol.: Polska Rzeczpospolita Ludowa, PRL) through the prism of concepts and ideas of model family and possibilities of shaping it, as promoted in the expert discourse and guidance practices. On the interpretation level, it is important to refer to modern – that is, rational and expert knowledgepropelled – social control methods, strictly connected with the concepts or ideas of modern society. The crucial aspect is the tension between biopolitics understood in terms of actions and strategies of modern dictatorship devised to control a population and the concepts of modernity that appeared in expert discourses in the context of, i.a., decreasing natality, modern birth control methods or practices related to maternity/paternity. Analysed are experts’ opinions proving dominant in the discourse, including the arguments put forth at sessions of the Family Council and the Planned Parenthood Association.

    Punktem wyjścia dla poniższego artykuły stał się film dokumentalny w reżyserii Krzysztofa Gradowskiego, który w 1970 r. wszedł na ekrany warszawskich kin i był szeroko komentowany przez ówczesne społeczeństwo. Autor podjął w nim problem samotności ludzi starych oraz biernie akceptowanej przez otoczenie szeroko pojętej przemocy i obojętności wobec nich. Film odbił się również echem w listach i skargach wysyłanych przez obywateli PRL do ówczesnych władz centralnych. Celem artykułu jest przede wszystkim próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, na ile dokument Gradowskiego był realnym i powszechnym obrazem doli starca w tym okresie oraz w jakim stopniu wyłaniający się z filmu obraz pokrywał się z tym przewijającym się w korespondencji i skargach Polaków lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych. W szerszej perspektywie tekst podejmuje również problem PRL-owskiej troski i odpowiedzialności w państwie socjalnym/opiekuńczym, ocierając się o zagadnienie szeroko pojętej biopolityki.
    The starting point for the article was a documentary film directed by K. Gradowski, which was broadcast in Warsaw cinemas in 1970, and was widely commented on by the society. The film, addressing the problem of loneliness of old people and broadly understood violence and indifference towards old people, was also echoed in letters and complaints sent by citizens of the Polish People’s Republic to the central authorities of those times. The purpose of the article is above all an attempt to answer the question to what extent the film image was a real and common picture of the old man’s fate in this period and to what extent the image emerging from the film coincided with that appearing in the correspondence and complaints of Poles of the 1960s and 1970s. In a broader perspective, the text also addresses the problem of care and responsibility in a social/welfare state of People’s Poland, brushing against the issue of broadly understood biopolitics of the Polish People’s Republic.
