Opis:
Although the analogies between the electron energy loss spectra and X-ray absorption spectra were recognized long ago, the possibility to observe the magnetic circular dichroism in the electron microscope was demonstrated only recently. This technique combines the atom specificity with the high spatial resolution of the transmission electron microscope. Being a very young technique, there are still many open questions concerning the optimization of the signal to noise ratio. In this paper we study the dichroic signal dependence on the sample thickness, acceleration voltage and incoming beam tilt angle of bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni.

Opis:
Starting from a uniform d-wave superconducting phase we study the energy cost due to imposed unidirectional defects with a vanishing pairing amplitude. Both renormalized mean-field theory and variational Monte Carlo calculations within the t-J model yield that the energies of inhomogeneous and uniform phases are very close to each other. This suggests that small perturbations in the microscopic Hamiltonian might lead to inhomogeneous superconducting phases in real materials as observed in recent scanning tunneling microscopy on $Ca_{2-x}Na_xCuO_2Cl_2$.

Opis:
Recent scanning tunneling microscopy in the superconducting regime of two different cuprate families revealed unidirectional bond-centered modulation in the local electronic density of states. Motivated by this result we investigate the emergence of modulated d-wave superconductivity coexisting with charge domains that form along one of the crystal axes. While detailed stripe profiles depend on the used form of the Gutzwiller factors, the tendency towards a valence bond crystal remains robust. We also find closely related stripe phase originating from the staggered flux phase, a candidate for the pseudogap phase of lightly doped cuprates.

Opis:
A two-dimensional phenomenological model of patch-domain formation on unsaturation in strongly coupled tri- and multilayer antiferromagnets is presented. Domain patterns are simulated using a fast Monte Carlo algorithm. As a first example the autocorrelation function of the simulated domain pattern is compared with that of a measured Kerr image.

Opis:
Magnetooptical Kerr effect measurements of room temperature hysteresis loops were taken using sandwich- and multilayer-type specimens and He-Ne laser light. For maximal external field of ~250 Gs the corresponding Kerr angle reached 0.04 deg. The samples were obtained in the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, using MBE method. The structure of samples may be described by a formula: substrate-buffer layer-(xCo/yCu)$\text{}_{n}$ -cover layer. Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ (two orientations) and MgO were used as substrates, the buffer layer was made of W, Cu or Fe, x=15, 20 or 25 Å, y=7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 20 Å, n=25 and 30. 50 Å of gold (Au) served as a cover layer. The genetic algorithm was subsequently used as a data processing tool, in order to reconstruct the Preisach map for each hysteresis loop. The diagrams clearly indicate changes of magnetic interactions caused by varying thicknesses of individual magnetic and non-magnetic layers.

Opis:
Magneto-optical properties of type II heterostructures with InSb/InAs quantum dots has been studied at external magnetic field applied in the Faraday geometry. The emission polarization degree can be changed in the range from 100% σ-minus to 10% σ-plus due to excitation intensity and temperature variation. The detailed calculation of the band structure within a tight-binding approximation is presented. The simulation of the experimental data reveals that the oscillator strength of the optical transitions involving electrons with the spin oriented along and opposite to the magnetic field vector differs by approximately 1.8 times in the heterostructures under study.
