Opis:
The interplay between the quantum size effect and superconductivity in the metallic Al nanofilms has been studied with the use of the self-consistent numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We have shown that the critical temperature of the metallic nanofilm oscillates as a function of the nanofilm thickness. This phenomenon results from the quasi-particle energy quantization induced by the confinement of electrons in the direction perpendicular to the film. For the ultrathin nanofilms with thickness 1-2 nm we have found that the critical temperature increases up to value several times higher as compared to the one measured in the bulk.

Opis:
Calculations of the quantum correction to the DC conductance of a cylindrical nanowire due to the quantum interference are presented. The real space Cooperon equation is solved for cylindrical geometry. Using this approach, it is shown that the quantum correction to the conductance in the weak localisation regime depends not only on the dephasing processes but also on geometrical parameters of the nanowire.

Opis:
The influence of the applied gate voltage on the coherent propagation of the conduction electrons through the InGaAs/InP core-multishell nanowires with the surrounding gate is considered. The solution of the three-dimensional Schrödinger equation within the effective mass approximation is found using the adiabatic method. The electrostatic potential distribution generated by the all-around gate is determined from the self-consistent procedure applied to the Schrödinger-Poisson problem. The Landauer-Büttiker formalism and quantum transmission boundary method are applied to calculate the transport properties of the considered nanosystem.

Using the computer simulations we have studied the spin conductance of the InAs nanowire with three all-around gates that generate two coupled quantum dots in the nanowire. We have assumed that the same constant voltage is applied to the outermost (left and right) gates and investigated the effect of the varying central-gate voltage (V_{G}) and axially directed magnetic field B on the spin currents. The calculated spin-up and spin-down conductances exhibit pronounced oscillations as functions of V_{G}. In certain intervals of V_{G}, both the spin conductances oscillate in antiphase, which can be applied to the spin-filter operation.

Opis:
The non-classical distribution function formalism is used for studying the electron transport in a nanosystem. We calculated the current-voltage characteristics of a triple barrier one-dimensional nanostructure which is connected to three-dimensional (highly doped semiconductor) reservoirs by the ohmic contacts. We also estimated the peak-to-valley ratio for the considered nanostructure and discussed the effect of switching the bias from peak-to-valley and from valley-to-peak voltages.

Opis:
The spin-dependent electronic transport is investigated in a paramagnetic resonant tunnelling diode formed from Zn$\text{}_{1 - x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Se quantum well between two ZnBeSe barrier layers. The spin-dependent current-voltage characteristics have been obtained in the presence of magnetic fields by solving the quantum kinetic equation for the Wigner distribution function and the Poisson equation in the self-consistent procedure. We have obtained two distinct current peaks due to the giant Zeeman splitting of electronic levels in a qualitative agreement with experiment. We have shown that the sign of spin current polarization can be reversed by tuning the bias voltage. Moreover, we have found the bias voltage windows with a nearly constant polarization.

Opis:
We analyze the Andreev conductance through a quantum dot strongly coupled to one ferromagnetic and one superconducting lead. The transmission due to the Andreev reflection is obtained from the numerical renormalization group method. We show that at low temperatures, depending on the dot level position, the Andreev conductance exhibits a peak at zero bias due to the Kondo effect, which can be split by the exchange field due to spin-dependent coupling to ferromagnetic lead.

Opis:
Superconductivity of indium diffused GaAs was investigated. The superconductivity in these samples was identified by the magnetic susceptibility and the characteristic field modulated microwave absorption. The static magnetic susceptibility was measured from 40 K down to 2.5 K. The result shows two distinctive diamagnetic contributions within 7 K-2.5 K range. These diamagnetic contributions were correlated with the excess of In and Ga metal in GaAs.

We have determined an instability of the Fermi-liquid state of almost localized fermions in an applied magnetic field. It is proposed that a transition to a strongly correlated fermions (statistical-spin-liquid) state takes place at that point. The resultant magnetization curve and the field dependence of the specific heat are calculated and compared with those for CeRu$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$.

The M$\text{}_{1}$/MgO/M$\text{}_{2}$ trilayer tunnel magnetoresistance systems are studied by means of X-ray diffraction, NMR, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. As M$\text{}_{1}$ and M$\text{}_{2}$ electrodes we used Co, Fe, and CoFe layers. The growth mechanism and structural quality of both electrodes and of the epitaxial MgO barrier forming the magnetic tunnel junctions are experimentally examined. It is shown that the crystallographic coherence of magnetic tunnel junctions across the MgO barrier is significantly disturbed by imperfect crystal structure of magnetic electrodes. The NMR results indicate a difference in short-range order between bottom and top electrodes.

The aim of this paper is to present the new method for relative changes measurements of intima-media thickness in the common carotid artery wall. The numerical solver was created for calculation of the fields of ultrasonic beams and scattered fields under different boundary conditions and different angles of penetration of ultrasonic beams with respect to the position of the arterial wall. The cylindrical model of the artery was changing the radius and thickness of the wall under cyclic variation of blood pressure. The presented method was verified on a pipe made of latex. The paper describes also the initial results of examinations of the intima-media thickness. The good agreement for the angle dependence and the perpendicular ultrasonic beam displacement from the longitudinal axis of the artery segment between the numerical calculation and experimental results was obtained for different artery diameters.

The scope of this study was the removal of heavy metal ions, ammonium and organic substances by ion exchange from municipal wastewaters. Clinoptilolite, bentonite, and palygorskite are especially interesting in the group of inorganic sorbents because of their specific physico-chemical properties. Specific surface areas and pore distributions were determined for the above sorbents. Sorption kinetics of Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and ammonium ions in synthetic solutions and wastewaters were investigated on the above sorbents. Ion sorption process was carried out with a static method at various phase contact times. The atomic adsorption spectroscopy method was used for measurements of heavy metal contents. The adsorption process was found to be pH and concentration dependent. The removal mechanism of metal ions was by adsorption and ion exchange processes. The FT-IR photoacoustic spectroscopy method was used to study mechanism of Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and ammonium ions sorption on the clinoptilolite, bentonite and palygorskite. The spectra of FT-IR/PAS before and after sorption of Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and ammonium ions were investigated.

Differential dynamical subgap transport measurements were performed on LSMO/YBCO/LSMO trilayers to probe local evolution of the Andreev bound states which are manifested as the zero bias conductance peak. Dynamical conductivity dI/dV vs. magnetic field measured in current in plane and current perpendicular to plane geometries show nonmonotonic behavior with maximum at about 500 Oe. The shape of the zero bias conductance peak measured in current in plane geometry is sharp, whereas zero bias conductance peak measured in current perpendicular to plane geometry demonstrates V shape. These shapes of the zero bias conductance peak were predicted theoretically for unconventional p-wave spin triplet phase superconductor and superconductor with d-wave symmetry of the order parameter, respectively.
