Opis:
An SiO$\text{}_{2}$ aerogel with absorbed deuterium is suggested as a target for the fusion reaction d+d → He$\text{}^{3}$+n by a super-intense ultrashort laser pulse. The multiple inner ionization of oxygen and silicon atoms in the fibers of this fractal aerogel takes place in super-intense laser field. The Coulomb explosion of the deuterated aerogel skeleton propels deuterons up to kinetic energies of ten keV and higher. The neutron yield is estimated up to 10$\text{}^{5}$ neutrons per laser pulse during≈500 ps if the peak intensity is 10$\text{}^{18}$ W/cm$\text{}^{2}$ and pulse duration is 35 fs.

In this work, we present a new result which concerns the derivation of the Green function relative to the time-independent Schrödinger equation in two-dimensional space. The system considered in this work is a quantal particle that moves in an axi-symmetric potential. At first, we have assumed that the potential V(r) to be equal to a constant $V_0$ inside a disk (radius a) and to be equal to zero outside the disk. We have used, to derive the Green function, the continuity of the solution and of its first derivative, at r=a (at the edge). Secondly, we have assumed that the potential V(r) is equal to zero inside the disk and is equal to $V_0$ outside the disk (the inverted potential). Here, also we have used the continuity of the solution and its derivative to obtain the associate Green function showing the discrete spectra of the Hamiltonian.

In this study, we consider some nonlinear partial integro-differential equations. Most of these equations are used as mathematical models in many problems of physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and in other areas. Our main purpose is to propose a new numerical method based on the Laguerre and Taylor polynomials, called matrix collocation method, for the numerical solution of the mentioned nonlinear equations under the initial or boundary conditions. To show the effectiveness of this approach, some examples along with error estimations are illustrated by tables and figures.

Highly porous IC3120 silica aerogel was subjected to the high pressure up to 450 MPa while the positron annihilation lifetime spectra were collected. The pressure was delivered to the investigated samples in two ways: by pistons and by gas (nitrogen) penetrating the aerogel. The evolution of all PALS parameters was discussed. With the increase of the pressure, shortening of ortho-positronium lifetimes (different, depending on the pressure method introduced) was observed. Similarity between the dependence of the longest-lived o-Ps component lifetime on the pressure, for the sample affected with nitrogen molecules and pure nitrogen was observed. It suggests, that the nitrogen fills the largest free volumes of the aerogel. The pressure exerted mechanically causes much smaller decrease of free volume available for positronium. The comparison of PALS results with the electron microscopy images, obtained after removing the pressure, confirmed that more intense and lasting changes were caused by affecting the aerogel with the pistons.

Frictional heating makes detrimental effects on surrounding tissue and lubricant around the artificial hip joint. For reduction of this thermal damage, testing parameters and their effects were investigated by using the Taguchi method and analysis of variance. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular liners and CoCrMo femoral head artificial hip joint components were used as samples. Frictional heating measurements of the joints were carried out on a custom made hip joint friction experimental setup. Surface dimples in different sizes were machined on the inner surface of acetabular insert samples. The tests were conducted under different loading conditions with different testing time. Bovine calf serum was used as lubricant with different amount of third body wear particles in it. Temperature rise in acetabular and femoral component was recorded with embedded thermocouples. The experimental results demonstrated that the surface dimples were the major parameter on frictional heating, followed by applied load, amount of third body particles and time. The optimal combination of the testing parameters was predicted and validated by doing experiments.

The investigation of intermolecular free volumes in resorcinol was conducted under high pressure, hydraulic pressure and gas (argon or nitrogen) atmosphere. The sizes of free volumes were estimated basing on the mean lifetime of ortho-positronium (o-Ps). In the first case, a monotonous change of lifetime and intensity was observed for the o-Ps component while the range of pressure was 0-477 MPa. On the other case, the samples were put into the pressure chamber filled with argon or nitrogen in the range of pressure from 0 to 450 MPa. When the pressure chamber was filled with a gas, the appearance of an additional o-Ps component has been found. In the nitrogen atmosphere, the material crushed when the gas pressure reached about 200 MPa, and the mean lifetime of the longest o-Ps component increased.

Positron lifetime spectra were measured as a function of pressure for multicomponent mixtures of alkanes with an average carbon chain length of 19 atoms, and a varying width of length distribution. The range of rotator phase broadens with increasing the wax component distribution. When the number of wax components was five or more, we have observed the coexistence of rotator-rigid phases. The results of analysis of high statistics positron annihilation lifetime spectra by MELT program speaks in favour of an existence (in that range) of a single broad component, rather than two components corresponding to the separate rigid and rotator phases. In the mixtures of alkanes, the inter-lamellar gap size increases significantly due to the presence of various chain lengths of the components forming the mixture. For all investigated waxes the pressure of 360 MPa was sufficient to reduce the gap width to that one observed in pure alkanes.

Synthesis of nanocrystalline, spherical, and anatase type $TiO_2$ photocatalyst were performed by supercritical gas antisolvent process in the range of 50-150C and 100-150 bar. As-prepared samples were calcined at 500C and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetry. In X-ray diffraction analysis, the anatase crystalline phase of titanium dioxide has been detected. The mean crystalline size of powders is about 13 nm. The photoactivity test of the powders was evaluated by the photodegradation of aqueous RR 180 (reactive red 180) solution under UV light. While the photocatalytic performance of $TiO_2$ powders (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 69.2 $m^2$/g) produced at 150 bar and 150C was found to be 98%, only 25% degradation was observed with powder produced at 150 bar and 100°C. Results showed that the powder properties and photocatalytic activity can be tuned by controlling the supercritical conditions such as temperature and pressure.

Friction between articulating surfaces cause temperature rise in acetabular cup and femoral head. This heating may influence the rate of wear, fatigue, creep, oxidative degradation of bearing materials and may terminate surrounding tissue. The objective of this study is to determine temperature rise with different applied load for the articulating surfaces of conventional ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and vitamin E blended ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (VE-UHMWPE) acetabular components paired with a ceramic femoral component in bovine calf serum lubrication condition. Additionally frictional torque between the bearing surfaces was measured and friction coefficient was calculated. Frictional measurements of the joints were carried out on a custom made hip joint friction simulator. Various levels of static loads were applied on 28 mm diameter prostheses. In flexion-extension plane, a simple harmonic oscillatory motion between ± 24° was applied to the UHMWPE acetabular component. The period of motion was 1 Hz and the tests were run up to 12,000 cycles. Temperature rise in acetabular and femoral component was recorded with embedded thermocouples. The results were compared in terms of UHMWPE and vitamin E blended UHMWPE.

A mathematical model describing the dynamic emission of intracavity polarized isotropic $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ solid-state saturable absorber was developed. This model considers double pumping laser pulses to simulate the actions of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ as a dual Q-switched crystal (1.06 μm) and lasing medium (1.4 μm). The model describes the time evolution of interaction between the pumping laser pulse, partial polarizer and the polarized saturable absorber. The analysis of the polarization process is based on the assumption that at each moment of lasing evolution, the state of polarization represented by an eigenstate corresponds to the lowest radiation losses state. The model offers a simple mechanism for studying the kinetics of the pulsed lasers and the influence of the variations of the pumping laser power and nonlinear anisotropy parameter on the characteristics of the output laser pulses 1.06 μm and 1.4 μm. The angular rotation of the passive switch $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ reveals that the transmission of the polarized 1.06 μm laser radiation is strongly anisotropic in the saturation regime. The suggested model estimates the transmission of pumping laser density of the polarized light 1.06 μm radiation as a function of nonlinear anisotropy parameter, temporal behavior of the relative population inversion of Nd-laser, population inversion of the different polarized levels of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ pulsed laser and the output laser pulse densities under impact of different values of the nonlinear anisotropy which is due to the self-induced anisotropy of its saturated absorption.

Using the exact decomposition of the sc lattice into a set of interacting dimers (each dimer is described by the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian) and exact solution of the dimer problem (preceding paper) we exactly find the form of the extended Hubbard model in the case of a crystal in the large U limit. We apply a new, nonperturbative approach based on the exact projection procedure onto a dimer subspace occupied by electrons in this limit (it is the only assumption). The resulting Hamiltonian is very complicated and contains a variety of multiple magnetic and nonmagnetic interactions deeply hidden in its original form (site representation). We also present a simplified version of the model to better visualize a mixture of different interactions resulting from this approach.

Positronium formation probability was investigated as a function of irradiation time and temperature for some long-chain saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes). Intensity of ortho-positronium component in the lifetime spectrum depends on the concentration of trapped excess electrons, but also on concentration of radicals and ions acting as electron scavengers. The results indicate the existence of two kinds of electron traps; those which are not emptied by thermal treatment disappear after several days of positron irradiation.

The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to study the porous Vycor glass annealed at the temperatures between 950 and 1050 K. With increased temperature the spectra show significant decrease in o-Ps lifetime and intensity in the pores, while the rise of intensity in the small intermolecular voids is observed. Similar changes are observed as a function of annealing time at fixed temperature depending on the time and temperature of thermal treatment. They can originate from partial crystallization of the silica in the material under study.

We have investigated optical properties which are very important for optoelectronic devices, such as laser modulators, photo detectors, optical amplifier and high efficient solar cells of BN and BBi using the density functional theory based on full potential linearized augmented plane wave method as implemented in Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP). The exchange correlation potential is treated by generalized gradient approximation. Primarily, we have calculated the equilibrium lattice constant ($a_0$) of BN and BBi. Our results for a_0 are 3.6264 $Å$ and 5.5243 $Å$ for BN and BBi, respectively. These results fairly coincide with theoretical and experimental studies. Then, we have calculated the optical parameters (dielectric functions, absorption and refractive index, reflectivity, energy loss function and conductivity) of BN and BBi which is directly related to the energy band structure of the material.
