Opis:
The experimental technique of spin polarised neutron scattering as used in magnetic form factor measurements is presented. An introduction to the interpretation and the calculation of magnetic form factors and magnetization densities is given. The experimental technique of neutron scattering theory as applied to elastic spin polarised scattering experiments is briefly introduced. The calculation of the magnetic form factor and the magnetization densities are considered for simple model systems such as a collection of localised magnetic moments or an itinerant electron system. The discussion is illustrated by an experimental investigation of the magnetic form factor in the heavy fermion superconductors UBe$\text{}_{13}$ and UPt$\text{}_{3}$. Magnetization density maps and magnetic form factors are presented, and their implications for other physical quantities are briefly discussed.

Opis:
The CdTe(100) c(2×2) surface prepared by ion bombardment and annealing was investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation with photon energies between 8.5 eV and 32 eV. The bulk band structure was determined along the ΓΔX-direction normal to the surface measuring energy-distribution curves. The results are compared with a theoretical valence band structure assuming free-electron-like final states in connection with k-conservation. For further comparison we calculated the final states by the pseudopotential method and analyzed the results in form of structure plots. In this way, most of the dispersing maxima in the normal emission spectra can be explained. For this mode of photoelectron spectroscopy the resulting dispersion must be due to the component of the Bloch wave vector normal to the surface, k$\text{}_{⊥}$, keeping surface related structures at a fixed binding energy position E$\text{}_{b}$. The lack of dispersion for five structures along ΓΔX gives experimental evidence for their surface origin.

Opis:
Unreconstructed CdTe(100) surface prepared by ion bombardment and annealing is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission. The experimental band structure E(k$\text{}_{∥}$) is determined along high-symmetry lines of the surface Brillouin zone by measuring energy-distribution curves of photoelectrons. Different criteria were applied to separate surface and bulk related spectral features, e.g. calculating the position of bulk-derived emissions in the frame of the free-electron final state approximation assuming k conservation. In this way, most dispersing features could be explained. All remaining features were compared with theoretical surface band structures for different polar surface terminations which were calculated within a layer doubling procedure on the basis of an EHT-fit to the bulk band structure. The investigated CdTe(100)-(1×1) surface could be identified as Cd terminated. Two surface bands were observed, one located above the valence-band edge and the second in the open pocket of the projected bulk band structure along the Γ̅K̅ direction. At 4.6 eV binding energy an additional weakly dispersing band was found, which contains mixed surface and bulk character. The high density of bulk states associated with this edge of the heteropolar gap is also expected to contribute to this feature.

Opis:
Ferromagnetic vortex core switching is investigated using micromagnetic simulations. For that the OOMMF program is used together with a temperature extension we have developed recently. This is a continuum micromagnetic approach, where the well-known Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (valid for zero temperature) is replaced by the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. In our research we simulate switching of a ferromagnetic vortex core in a flat disk (diameter 200 nm, thickness 20 nm) with material parameters that resemble permalloy. Temperatures in the range 400 K to 700 K are considered. Switching itself is caused by application of a very short oscillating magnetic pulse. Parameters used resemble conditions met in the experiment: oscillation period 141 ps (equal to the peak width) and amplitude 60 mT. Surprisingly, no large temperature- or discretization dependence is found. Reasons for that are discussed.

The emission spectrum of the Ångström system (B$\text{}^{1}$Σ$\text{}^{+}$ → A$\text{}^{1}$Π) of $\text{}^{13}$C$\text{}^{16}$O was recorded and analysed by classical photographical spectroscopy. Under high resolution and with a precision estimated to be 0.010-0.020 cm$\text{}^{-1}$ the bands 1-2, 1-7, and 0-6 were recorded for the first time and the 0-1, 0-2, 1-1, and 1-5 bands were rephotographed and reexaminated. After the rotational analysis of the bands the following constants were calculated: (1) the rotational constants B$\text{}_{v}$, D$\text{}_{v}$ for the B$\text{}^{1}$Σ$\text{}^{+}$ and A$\text{}^{1}$Π states; (2) the equilibrium constants B$\text{}_{e}$,α$\text{}_{e}$, D$\text{}_{e}$, andβ$\text{}_{e}$ for the B$\text{}^{1}$Σ$\text{}^{+}$ state; (3) theν$\text{}_{0}$ band origins. A combined analysis of the currently observedÅ ngström bands and the previously observed Herzberg (C$\text{}^{1}$Σ$\text{}^{+}$ → A$\text{}^{1}$Π) and the (E$\text{}^{1}$ Π → A$\text{}^{1}$Π) bands made it possible to perform a precise relative characteristic of the B$\text{}^{1}$ Σ$\text{}^{+}$(v=0 and 1), C$\text{}^{1}$Σ$\text{}^{+}$(v=0) and E$\text{}^{1}$Π(v=0) Rydberg levels in $\text{}^{13}$C$\text{}^{16}$O. Numerous rotational perturbations observed in the A$\text{}^{1}$ Π state were confronted with the perturbations predicted from the theoretical calculations.

Ba(Ti_{1-x}Zr_{x})O₃ (x=0÷0.3) ceramics were prepared by the standard solid state reaction method and were sintered at 1450°C for 4 h. The structural and dielectric properties of the samples were studied. The phases formed in the ZrO₂ doped BaTiO₃ were tetragonal and of cubic symmetry. Increase in ZrO₂ content in the BaTiO₃ caused to increase of the lattice parameter and crystallite size of the perovskite structure. The evolution of the Raman spectra was studied for various compositions and the spectroscopic signature of the corresponding phase was determined. The scanning electron microscope was used to investigate the microstructure and surface morphology of the sintered samples. Scanning electron microscope observations revealed enhanced microstructural uniformity and retarded grain growth with increase of ZrO₂ content. Dielectric characteristics of ZrO₂ doped barium titanate were studied using a Hioki 3532-50 LCR meter in the frequency range of 1 kHz-1 MHz. It is found that the dielectric constant (ε_{r}) increases while the dielectric loss (tan δ) decreases with increase in zirconium oxide content (x<0.3).

In this study, the effect of B₂O₃ addition on the sintering behavior of 0-5-10% ZrO₂ doped barium titanate based microwave dielectric ceramics were investigated. For this purpose, the powder mixtures consisting of BaCO₃, TiO₂ and ZrO₂ were prepared by ball milling technique in alcohol using ZrO₂ balls at 200 cycle/min for 20 h. The prepared powders were calcined at 900°C for 2 h. Produced powders were mixed 0.5% B₂O₃ and 5% PVA and pressed as green body under the pressure of 100 MPa. The disc-shaped die-pressed samples were sintered at 1250°C, 1350°C and 1450°C for 4 h. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the main phases formed in the sintered samples are BaTiO₃ and $Ba(Ti_{1-x}Zr_{x})O_3$. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to investigate microstructure of the sintered samples. The bulk densities of the sintered samples increased with the addition of B₂O₃ content due to the low number of pores trapped between the grains.

We studied cracks in two different $In_{x}Ga_{1-x}As//GaAs(001)$ multi-quantum-well structures by electron microscopy. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy analyses of the sample-1 revealed that the epilayers associated with cracks. Detailed experimental works on the cracks were carried out by conventional and high-resolution electron microscopy. It was found that the epilayers were very effective on stopping the cracks in sample-1. Many dislocations were observed around the cracks and cracks tips. SEM images showed that the cracks formed an orthogonal set array accompanying with slits and pits. However, there were not observed any cracks in the sample-2.

Flux distribution in a Bi$\text{}_{2}$Sr$\text{}_{2}$CaCu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{8}$ superconductor sample, shaped as a thin disk with a hole in the center, and covered with a thin layer of magnetic garnet, was observed by means of magneto-optical Faraday effect. Applying external magnetic field perpendicularly to the sample plane with zero field cooling history, we were able to observe the flux trapped in superconductor, visible as concentric rings. Both directions of the trapped field were observed near the sample surface. Using the genetic algorithm we were able to determine the radial distribution of concentric currents in the sample under study.

Alloy disorder can affect ferromagnetism and metal-insulator transitions of correlated lattice fermion systems in subtle and often unexpected ways. Solving the Hubbard model and the periodic Anderson model within dynamical mean-field theory we show that alloy disorder can increase the Curie temperature of a non-disordered system, and also yields novel Mott or Kondo insulators at fractional electronic densities.

Samples of the composition RE$\text{}_{x}$Co$\text{}_{20}$Cu$\text{}_{80-x}$, RE = Sm, Gd or Dy (x = 0, 1, and 3) were produced by melt-spinning and subsequent annealing. The magnetoresistance is negative as in granular Co-Cu, but its values depend on the kind of rare earth element added and on changes in the microstructure induced by thermal annealing. An addition of 1 at.% rare earth metal to Co$\text{}_{20}$Cu$\text{}_{80}$ yields a considerable increase in the magnetoresistance ratio, whereas an addition of 3 at.% causes a decrease. E.g., by addition of 1 at.% Dy to Co$\text{}_{20}$Cu$\text{}_{80}$ and optimal thermal treatment, the value of magnetoresistance ratio measured at 10 K in a field of 5 T increases from -14% to -28%. The effect can be attributed to the presence of clusters of hexagonal Dy(Co,Cu)$\text{}_{5}$, which was ascertained from X-ray diffraction data, or other, metastable rare-earth compounds and paramagnetic rare-earth atoms in the Cu matrix.

This paper presents the molar heat capacity at constant volume C_{V} and characteristic Debye temperature θ, determination for the garnet system, Y_{3-x}Fe_{5+x}O_{12}, x=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 at 300 K. The θ values determined from Waldron's approach and those calculated using ultrasonic mean sound velocity, V_{mo}, are in agreement. C_{V} values calculated from the Einstein theory are consistent with the reported one and theoretically expected values using the Dulong-Petit law, but Waldron's approach based on the Debye theory and the Debye T³ law fail to estimate consistent C_{V} values. The result has been discussed in the light of key physical differences between the two theories. The applicability of the Kieffer model for molar heat capacity at constant pressure, C_{p}, determination has been tested. Finally, an attempt has been made to estimate electronic contribution and the temperature at which the lattice contribution and electronic contribution to the molar heat capacity become comparable.

Magnetooptical Kerr effect measurements of room temperature hysteresis loops were taken using sandwich- and multilayer-type specimens and He-Ne laser light. For maximal external field of ~250 Gs the corresponding Kerr angle reached 0.04 deg. The samples were obtained in the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa, using MBE method. The structure of samples may be described by a formula: substrate-buffer layer-(xCo/yCu)$\text{}_{n}$ -cover layer. Al$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ (two orientations) and MgO were used as substrates, the buffer layer was made of W, Cu or Fe, x=15, 20 or 25 Å, y=7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 20 Å, n=25 and 30. 50 Å of gold (Au) served as a cover layer. The genetic algorithm was subsequently used as a data processing tool, in order to reconstruct the Preisach map for each hysteresis loop. The diagrams clearly indicate changes of magnetic interactions caused by varying thicknesses of individual magnetic and non-magnetic layers.

Opis:
The objective of this work is to produce activated carbon from sugar beet molasses containing TiO₂ for CO₂ adsorption and reduction. Textural properties of activated carbons were obtained based on the adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77 K. The specific surface areas of activated carbons were calculated by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. The volumes of micropores were obtained by density functional theory method. The adsorption isotherms of CO₂ were measured up to the pressure of 1 atm at a temperature of 40°C. The best activated carbon adsorbed 1.9 mmol/g of CO₂.
