Opis:
Over the last few years we have developed a new method to control single-electrons by isolating and moving them through a submicron width channel formed in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure using a surface acoustic wave. The acoustic wave acts to push electrons through the depleted submicron channel in packets each containing an integer number of electrons. Our primary motivation for studying this system has been to develop a new standard of dc current for metrological purposes, but our recent focus has widened to investigate the possibility of single-photon emission. Here we show new experimental results which demonstrate acoustoelectric current flow in adjacent 1D wires. These results have relevance both to the use of the system in a single-photon emission scheme, as well as in the creation of a proposed acoustoelectric quantum computer.

Opis:
Quantum dots have been identified as potential sources of entangled photon pairs, essential for many applications in quantum information. However, in practice structural properties of the dots result in polarisation splitting of the emission lines, which has prevented the realisation of such a source. Here, we present two techniques developed to control the polarisation splitting in a quantum dot both irreversibly and reversibly. We find that the splitting is strongly dependent upon the emission energy, or lateral confinement, of the quantum dot. Thus by precise control of the InAs deposition thickness, it is possible to produce ensembles from which dots with zero polarisation splitting can be easily selected. Additionally, we demonstrate that by using modest in-plane magnetic fields to partially mix the bright and dark exciton states, the polarisation splitting can be reversibly tuned to zero for most dots of a certain type. Finally, we demonstrate the emission of triggered entangled photon pairs from a quantum dot with approximately zero splitting with fidelity >70%.

Opis:
Non-square quantum wells in electric field have been investigated by photoreflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The structures have been obtained by a post-growth modification (rapid thermal annealing) of standard 1.55μm InGaAsP-based laser structures that were grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. During rapid thermal annealing a migration of semiconductor atoms across quantum well interfaces changes the quantum well profile from a square well to a rounded well. The modification of the profile changes energy levels in the quantum well and in consequence a blue shift of the quantum well emission peak is observed in photoluminescence. In this paper the blue shift of the ground state transition of post-growth modified quantum well structures has been investigated by both photoluminescence and photoreflectance techniques. Also a blue shift of excited state transitions has been observed in photoreflectance spectra. Generally, a stronger blue shift for the ground state transition than for excited state transitions has been observed. Additionally, oscillator strengths for all quantum well transitions have been determined from photoreflectance spectra. It has been found that the oscillator strength is constant for all quantum well transitions despite of modification of the quantum well profile.

The reentrant spin-glass transition was found in the samples of solid solutions CuCr$\text{}_{1.5+0.5x}$Sb$\text{}_{0.5-0.5x}$S$\text{}_{4}$ with x=0.34 and 0.4. The transition temperature to the spin-glass state T$\text{}_{f}$, determined from the bend on the temperature dependence of the initial susceptibility in an ac magnetic field, depends on the measurement frequency. It was shown that the dependence T$\text{}_{f}$(ω) obeys the power law 1/ω=(1/ω$\text{}_{0}$)[T$\text{}_{f}$/(T$\text{}_{f}$ - T*)]$\text{}^{zν}$ assuming existence of the phase transition at T*. The maximum of the temperature dependence of electroresistivity was found for the sample with x=0.34 in T* region. These facts show that considered spin-glass-long magnetic order transition is the phase transition.

The quantum transfer-matrix method was applied to study the finite-temperature static properties of the spin S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains in a wide range of the single-ion anisotropy and temperatures. The high-resolution quantum transfer-matrix simulation data are obtained for the zero-field susceptibility, specific heat as well as for the field-dependent magnetization. The microscopic parameters of a number of real quasi-one-dimensional compounds are found from fitting procedures, some theoretical approaches are numerically verified and an extension of the technique to a non-uniform bond alternating molecular magnets is also put forward.

We address the problem of reliability of a finite-chain technique for CsNiF$\text{}_{3}$. We investigate the effect of the boundary conditions, completely neglected so far, and apply a new extrapolation procedure appropriate for quantities showing non-monotonic behaviour. From a detailed analysis of the specific heat existing theoretical estimates for the model parameters are discriminated and a strong evidence for the reliability of the direct finite-chain technique predictions is presented.

A numerical transfer-matrix approach and an exact diagonalization technique exploiting the point-group symmetry are worked out in the framework of quantum statistical mechanics and group theory for finite rings. They are applied to spin models of the high nuclearity cyclic clusters [Mn(hfac)$\text{}_{2}$NITPh]$\text{}_{6}$ and Ni$\text{}_{12}$(O$\text{}_{2}$CMe)$\text{}_{12}$(chp)$\text{}_{12}$(H$\text{}_{2}$O)$\text{}_{6}$(THF)$\text{}_{6}$. We report the first studies of luminescence spectra from asymmetric double quantum wells of GaAs with widths around 100 Å differing by only one (2.8 Å) or two monolayers. Studies of the position and intensity of the direct and indirect exciton lines suggest the existence of acoustic phonon-assisted tunnelling between exciton states separated by a few meV. At temperatures 10-20 K the electron tunnelling process is fast enough to maintain thermal equilibrium between these direct and indirect excitons which are connected with holes in the same quantum well.

We report on measurements of samples with nominal composition $FeSe_{0.5}Te_{0.5}$, crystallized by the Bridgman method. Magnetic and transport properties of the samples were examined. The measurements confirm the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity below the superconducting transition temperature. The ferromagnetic contribution to magnetization, estimated at 10%, might be caused by the presence of ferrimagnetic $Fe_7Se_8$, which occupies about 10% of sample volume. From the Andreev spectroscopy we found superconducting energy gap Δ = 2.6 meV at T = 4.2 K, and from magnetization measurements the critical temperature $T_c$ = 15.8 K. The critical current density in magnetic field H = 4 kOe, determined from magnetization measurements, is $j_c$ = (1-2) × 1$0^4$ A/$cm^2$ and weakly depends on magnetic field intensity.

A new technique of measurements of field emission current fluctuations is proposed. The technique uses fiber optics and offers such advantages as the possibility to easily vary the geometry of the probed regions and the distance between them on the field emitter. The correlation functions of field emission current fluctuations have been measured with this technique for O/W(110), H/W(110), Si(111) and Na/Si(111) systems. Some data on surface diffusion coefficients are derived from the measurements.

The diffusion is the result of Brownian movement and occurs with a finite velocity. We consider the nonlinear diffusion equation, with diffusion coefficient directly proportional to the impurities concentration. In this case of diffusion from the constant source, the maximum displacements of diffusing particles are proportional to the square root of diffusion time. This result coincides with Brownian movement theory. The obtained analytically solutions were successfully applied for describing the diffusion and superdiffusion experiments' in solids. After theoretical consideration of application of this equation for diffusion in gases, we are investigating here the binary nonlinear diffusion in gases. We obtained the nonlinear interdiffusion equation, for the spherical symmetric case, and presented the approximate analytical solutions.

Total energy minimization enables us to estimate the equilibrium volume, bulk modulus and its pressure derivative. We have also described the total density of states and the partial density of states around the Fermi energy.
