Opis:
This research examines the numerical solutions to the direct problem of electrical impedance tomography for two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, taking into count the surface relief on the basis of the integral equations method. The results of the numerical modeling identify a distortion effect for vertical electrical sounding curves caused by relief surface and the apparent resistivity function along the relief surface is obtained.

Current standards for the measurement of the SI derived unit of sound-in-air pressure, the pascal, are based upon microphone reciprocity calibration and are achieved indirectly through microphone sensitivity. These methods require microphones of specific geometry and performance characteristics, effectively artefacts, and are traceable through standards for electrical and dimensional units. Measurement of acousto-optic interactions can provide a direct approach to measuring sound pressure. One acousto-optic interaction is the periodic scattering of photons caused by particles moving in a sinusoidal manner due to propagating sound across interference fringes formed at the intersection of two coherent laser beams. The sequence of these scattered photons, which is collected using telescopic optics and generated by a single photon counting device, can be autocorrelated to yield the periodicity of the photon events. Through mathematical analysis of the autocorrelation function it has been shown that acoustic particle velocity is inversely proportional to the time of the first minimum. This has effectively been shown for measurements in acoustic standing wave tubes and has been developed into a method which can be applied in an anechoic chamber. This paper describes the design and implementation of such a system which allows for a comparison of sound pressure measurements using optical and microphone based techniques.

Phase transitions in n-alkanes were observed by using the positron annihilation lifetime method. In the case of alkanes, application of pressure is equivalent to temperature lowering (1 K corresponds to ≈4 MPa). When argon at high pressure penetrates the sample one observes a non-monotonous dependence of the melting point on pressure. This effect is observed also in even-numbered alkanes, in which there is no rotator phase.

Ortho-positronium lifetime and intensity was measured as a function of temperature and pressure for some n-alkanes in which so-called "phase IV" appears. This phase is characterized by slightly increased ortho-positronium lifetime compared to low-temperature phases. It was found that the effect of quenching positronium by light does not appear in all phases from phase IV upwards. The lifetime in the rotator phases becomes equal to that in liquids, and only the change of positronium formation intensity allows to detect the solid-liquid transition in positron lifetime measurements.

Opis:
The possibility of using the transverse acoustoelectric phenomena in experimental investigations of near surface region in semiconductor crystals was discussed. The results of experimental investigations of GaP:Te(111) surfaces by means of the transverse acoustoelectric voltage were presented. Applying the transverse acoustoelectric voltage method, the lifetime τ of minority carrier in the near-surface region and the surface potential $V_{s}$ in GaP:Te(111) surfaces after their different technological treatments were determined.

In this paper the influence of alloying elements (Si and Al) on the precipitation process of Mg₂Sn phase in Mg-Sn alloys is presented. X-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the lattice parameters of α -Mg solid solution, the phases content and size of the Mg₂Sn precipitates. It was found that silicon causes the refinement of the precipitates of Mg₂Sn phase, however it does not result in a significant increase of hardness increment after ageing treatment at 250°C. The addition of aluminum has a positive effect on the hardness of Mg-7Sn-5Si alloy.

Positronium (Ps) formation during self-irradiation by positrons was observed in n-alkanes of various carbon chain length. The rise of Ps intensity with time of irradiation is the result of positronium formation with trapped excess electrons. In the range T < 190 K the saturation value of positronium intensity changes with temperature mainly due to the change of positron mobility. With the increase of the irradiation dose the process of charging traps is slowing down and this effect is ruled mainly by interaction of excess electrons with ionization products during electron's migration to the traps.

Opis:
Sulphur hexafluoride, SF₆ gas has excellent physical and chemical properties and insulation arc extinction performance. It has been widely used in electric power systems and other electrical equipment due to such advantages, as compact size and high reliability. SF₆, can be decomposed into different gases, when the equipment exhibits arc discharge, local heating of contactor, and partial discharge. It is important to detect decomposition of insulating gas SF₆, caused by partial discharges for gas-insulated switchgear. Partial discharge in gas-insulated switchgear can lead to the generation of multiple decomposition products of SF₆, and the detection and analysis of these decomposition products is important for fault diagnosis. The detection of decomposition components is needed to maintain on-line running state monitoring. Recently, interest in carbon nanotubes has been rapidly growing in various scientific and engineering fields, because of their faster response, higher sensitivity, lower operating temperature and a wider variety of detectable gas. In this paper, a molecular dynamics simulation software package, Materials Studio, is used to model accurately the processes by which single-walled carbon nanotubes could detect studied gases. All calculations were performed using the DMol³module of the Materials Studio. We compute the preferential adsorption sites, bonding configurations, and adsorption geometry for molecular adsorption. Results of analysis of electrical characteristics reveal that SWCNTs show different responses to the decomposed gases.

Opis:
The study of pyroelectric response of monocrystalline TGS cubic specimens to changes of temperature induced by linear and pulse heating of three mutually perpendicular pairs of cube sides demonstrated a complicated structure of signals. We attribute their forms to the activation of various hydrogen bonds between glycine G1, G2, and G3 molecules. In the case of pulse heating the pyroelectric signal is observed also in the paraelectric phase.

We study the properties of ultra-cold bosons in optical lattice in arbitrary gauge potentials. Using quantum rotor approach we are able to go beyond mean-field approximation thus taking into account subtleties of the band structure of the artificial magnetic field. This allows us to elucidate the interplay of the subbands widths and energy gaps on the formation of the coherent state. As a result, we are able to pinpoint the elements of the band structure, which are crucial to proper theoretical description of the synthetic magnetic field in a lattice bosonic system. This leads us finally to a method of approximation of the Hofstadter butterfly spectrum with a simpler band structure and use it to investigate the ground state of the system for a wide range of magnetic fluxes.

Epitaxial $La_{0.67}Ca_{.33}MnO_3$ (LCMO) thin films by off-axis magnetron sputtering were deposited on $SrTiO_3$ (STO) substrates. Complex impedance measurements (module and phase of the thin film impedance) in frequency range 1-30 kHz are done. Substantial dependence of both: module and phase of the complex surface impedance is observed. The temperature interval scanned is from 77 K to room temperature. The impedance has inductive behavior for temperatures less than the Curie temperature and capacitive for higher temperatures. Reduction of the film thickness from 60 to 30 nm shifts the impedance curves to the lower temperatures.

Opis:
We study ultra-cold bosonic systems in optical lattice using quantum rotor approach to calculate the current-current correlations, which provides the information about conductivity of the system. The method allows us to go beyond mean-field approximation and track the behavior of the real part of the conductivity along the phase transition between the Mott insulator and superfluid state for various geometries of the lattice. In the phase-ordered state at zero temperature, a discrete ingredient appears resulting from the long-range coherence in the system.

We present a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of $Cr_8F_8(Piv)_{16}$ molecular ring (in short Cr8) using the package SIESTA with several choices of chromium pseudopotential parameters. We use generalized gradient approximation to investigate properties of Cr8 ring approximated by replacing the pivallic group by H atoms (hydrogen saturation). For different choice of chromium pseudopotential we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of Cr8 molecule. We compare highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps for both spin channels, magnetic moments, and exchange interaction parameter J. The influence of pseudopotential parameters on obtained results is discussed. Finally our results are compared with other theoretical approaches and experimental data.

Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy and structural X-ray diffractometry have been used to study nitrides formation in the surface layer of cast steels subjected previously to low-temperature nitriding. It has been found that creation of iron-nitrogen phases strongly depends on sample composition. Nitrides: $γ^\prime-Fe_{4}N$ and $\epsilon-Fe_{2-3}N$ arise in the course of the nitriding procedure in most investigated cast steels. Moreover, considerable changes in their microstructure and tribological properties occur. The depth profile of nitrides has been derived for selected cast steel.

Opis:
The paper presents the acoustic method for determining some parameters of fast surface states in semiconductors. This method uses the interactions of the phonon-electron type for determining both the effective carrier lifetime τ influenced by the fast surface energetic states and the velocity g of the carrier trapped by the surface states. Some experimental results of the parameters τ and g in near-surface region of real Si(111) samples for their various surface treatments, obtained by the offered method, are presented.
