When considering questions such as What it means that something is? when? where? and how? we may for some purposes say that we are concentrating entirely on is - sometime, somewhere, somehow. This illustrates a transition from physical abstraction to ontological abstraction.

Opis:
A description is given of resonant tunnelling processes in double-barrier semiconductor heterostructures from the point of view of sequential theory. If a magnetic field is applied in the plane of the barrier interfaces, the energy and transverse momentum of the electrons injected into the quantum well through the emitter tunnel barrier can be varied independently by changing the applied voltage and magnetic field. This technique can be used to probe the energy and momentum spectrum of the subband states in a quantum well. In n-type wide-well structures, a detailed interpretation of magneto-oscillations in the tunnel current has been given in terms of semiclassical orbits of electrons in the well. In p-type structures with narrow wells, the dispersion curves of hole subbands, which are complicated by the strong mixing of light hole and heavy hole states, have been directly studied. Resonant tunnelling into the bound state of single donor atoms in a quantum well has recently been observed. The magnetic field dependence of the tunnel current then gives a measure of the transverse momentum distribution and hence lateral extent of the donor wave function.

Field-effect transistors are nowadays considered as possible elements of THz detection and emission systems. Their THz performance is governed by excitations of two-dimensional plasma in the transistor channel. The paper discusses peculiarities of the photon-plasmon coupling mechanism in field-effect transistors and puts it in the perspective of classical investigation of plasma excitations in two-dimensional systems.

We summarize recent developments in the area of the coherent propagation of laser pulses through dielectric media. We will show that the principle of dynamical adiabaticity opens new avenues to control the non-perturbative and resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a three-level medium. Examples include the formation of stable wave forms that can travel through optical dielectric media in a loss-free manner with arbitrary pulse shapes, novel possibilities to store optical information in dielectric media in the form of spatially dependent excitations and techniques to exploit this information to control laser pulse envelopes

We review a progress in understanding of statistical properties of a quantum degenerate Bose gas. We show how the Maxwell demon ensemble helps to compute fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate of an ideal Bose gas according to the microcanonical ensemble. Then, we review a method of measuring these fluctuations. Using a soluble model of interacting Bose gas we also stress the importance of higher-order correlation functions. Finally, we review our novel computational method of studying an interacting Bose gas near its critical temperature.

A survey of the physical properties of solid state materials activated with d$\text{}^{2}$, d$\text{}^{3}$ and d$\text{}^{8}$ transition metal ions is presented in the context of tunable laser operation. An emphasis is put on common characteristics of all three systems, like a strong electron-phonon coupling and similar electronic structures. The conditions necessary to obtain a tunable operation and to avoid an overlap of the excited state absorption and emission are formulated. It is shown that the d$\text{}^{3}$ configuration system has the largest range of allowed values of the crystal field parameter 10Dq.

Opis:
Two different, working examples of organization of econophysics graduate courses at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw and the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Wrocław University are considered. In the first example we have a system where the interdisciplinary, econophysical education begins only after three years study of physics. Within this system the M.Sc. as well as Ph.D. theses in econophysics are conducted only at the Faculty of Physics. In the second example the B.Sc. theses in econophysics are accomplished in the Department of Physics and Astronomy again after three years study but higher degrees can be prepared either in physics in the Institute of Theoretical Physics or in economy in the Institute of Economical Sciences. M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses can also be conducted. For both examples, the graduate students of econophysics are obliged to participate in traditional (typical) economical lectures and trainings which are offered them by economical departments while lectures and trainings (tutorials and/or laboratory classes) in econophysics are offered them by physics departments themselves. Thus Poland is one of a few countries, where so modern interdisciplinary knowledge is systematically offered to students.

Opis:
Since modern semiconductor epitaxy techniques have reached the present level of perfectness, resonant tunneling through double barrier structures has attracted new interest, also with respect to novel device applications. The present review shortly discusses the underlying physical concepts of resonant tunneling through semiconductor multiple heterostructures. Beside resonant tunneling diodes also concepts for tunneling transistors are discussed. In particular, a novel 2D-2D tunnel transistor is presented, in which tunneling between two neighboring two-dimensional electron gases yields current-voltage characteristics with two types of instabilities depending on the applied gate voltage. Scaling down the lateral dimensions of a resonant tunneling diode leads to quantum boxes or dots, in which the effect of single electron tunneling with Coulomb-blockade can be observed. The underlying physics is discussed on the basis of recent experiments and theoretical calculations. Finally some possible future applications both of resonant tunneling diodes and of single electron devices are presented.

Quantum dots contain only a few well-defined energy levels for electron and/or holes as a result of the confinement of charge in all three spatial dimensions. Here, we describe both the application of photoluminescence spectroscopy and transport measurements to the characterisation of quantum dots and the novel phenomena that they exhibit. These include the Coulomb blockade, single electron tunnelling and single photon detection. The impact of quantum dots on future electronics and directions for future research, such as in quantum computing and cryptography, are addressed.

Opis:
We present the main features of the spin-orbital superexchange which describes the magnetic and optical properties of the Mott insulators with orbital degrees of freedom. In contrast to the SU(2) symmetry of spin superexchange, the orbital part of the superexchange obeys the lower cubic symmetry of the lattice and is intrinsically frustrated. This intrinsic frustration and spin-orbital entanglement induce enhanced quantum fluctuations, and we point out a few situations where this leads to disordered states. Strong coupling between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom is discussed on the example of the $RVO_3$ perovskites, with R standing for rare-earth ion, La,...,Lu. We explain the observed evolution of the orbital $T_{OO}$ and Néel $T_{N1}$ transition temperature in the $RVO_3$ series with decreasing ionic radius $r_R$. A few open problems and the current directions of research in the field of spin-orbital physics are pointed out.
