We report structural and magnetic properties of Ni$\text{}_{83}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$/Cu multilayer films with various buffer layer and sublayer thicknesses of copper d$\text{}_{Cu}$ and Permalloy d$\text{}_{Py}$ deposited by face-to-face sputtering. The following features prove a good quality of our films: a well-layered structure, complete antiferromagnetic coupling with a low coupling strength (2×10$\text{}^{-5}$ J/m$\text{}^{2}$ for d$\text{}_{Cu}$=1 nm and 10$\text{}^{-6}$ J/m$\text{}^{^2}$ for d$\text{}_{Cu}$=2.1 nm) and a low coercive field which make them attractive for possible applications as giant magnetoresistance sensors.

Two types of the silica materials were used for the preparation of iron oxides. The MCM-48 type silica support and wide-pore silica gel were impregnated with iron nitrates. The samples were investigated by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption method, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and $\text{}^{57}Fe$ Mössbauer spectroscopy. Redox properties were studied by the temperature programmed reduction method. Strongly dispersed hematite was evidenced on the supports. An application of the MCM-48 silica mesoporous materials led to the development of the oxide phases within the ordered porous structure. The detailed temperature programmed reduction studies evidenced slight differences of the redox properties of the species located within the silica templates and after their removal. Magnetic properties of iron oxides were related to the porous structure of the silica supports. The Mössbauer study of high surface area materials Fe/$SiO_{2}$ and Fe/MCM-48 type silicate templates revealed existence of ferro- and superparamagnetic phases. The relative contribution of the superparamagnetic doublet component in Mössbauer spectra is 15% and 80% for Fe/$SiO_{2}$/c and Fe/MCM-48/c samples, respectively.

The electrical and magnetic properties of $Fe_{0.5}A_{0.5}$ alloys are presented, where the A corresponds to various compositions of the elements: A = (Al, Si, V, Cr, Co, Ga, Ni, Ge). The system is closely related to the known family of high entropy alloys. The samples were synthesized by arc melting and/or melt spinning technique and exhibit a regular type of crystal structure. Lattice parameters are systematically smaller than the estimates based on metallic radiuses of the elements. Temperature dependences of resistivities show maxima for some compositions. This behavior is consistent with results of electronic structure calculations, where a low density of states at the Fermi level were predicted. Also the measured magnetic moments are in good agreement with results of calculations. It is thus presented that some physical properties can be designed by appropriate choice of the chemical composition within the same simple structure.

Opis:
In this work the magnetic properties of ribbons with composition of $Nd_{10}Fe_{83}Zr_1B_6$ obtained by using the melt-spinning method were studied. From the X-ray diffraction patterns the phase composition was determined. It was found that investigated alloy was composed of α-Fe and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases. From the peaks broadening the grain sizes of α-Fe and $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phases were estimated as equal to 20 nm and 40 nm, respectively. From the recoil curves the reversible $μ_0$ $M_{rev}$ and irreversible $μ_0 M_{irr}$ parts of magnetization and differential susceptibility $χ_{rev}$ and $χ_{irr}$ were determined as a function of an applied field. From these dependences it was found that the pinning of domain walls at the grain boundaries is the main magnetization reversal process. The interactions between grains were investigated by means of the δ M plot. It was stated that short range exchange interaction between grains of hard and soft phases are dominant and causes the remanence enhancement.

The present paper describes a comparison of magnetic properties of $Nd_{12}Fe_{82}B_6$ and $Nd_{14}Fe_{80}B_6$ powders obtained by a new method of processing of Nd-Fe-B powders - high temperature milling. In this method the milling operation is carried out, entirely or only in the final stage, at high temperatures, so that the destruction of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase and its recombination occur simultaneously. In this way a powder with good magnetic properties immediately after milling was obtained. In the present experiments, the powder was subjected to high-energy milling for 17 h (until the material becomes amorphous) and then, the milling was continued for 0.5 h with the powder container being heated to an appropriate temperature or milled at high temperature during whole time of the process. Diffraction examinations have shown that the powder processed in this way contains the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase. Its magnetic properties appear to depend on the applied temperature or milling time (at optimum temperature). The used method of processing leads to obtaining high-coercivity Nd-Fe-B powders. The magnetic properties of the material thus produced, in particular its coercivity, strongly depend on the milling temperature and milling time.

Opis:
The current study is a continuation of experiments presented by Sęk and Bukała (Acta Physica Polonica A 123, 1106 (2013)). The purpose of the present study was to investigate frequency discrimination of amplitude modulated high frequency carriers. Using 2AFC procedure, the subjects were presented with two observation intervals of which the first interval contained four pulses of the same high frequency signal (called SSSS), while in the second interval (called SHSH) the second and fourth pulses had higher frequencies values (i.e. shifted upwards by Δ f). The carrier frequency (in S pulses) was fixed and equal to 10 kHz. Modulation rates were equal to 100, 200, 337, 500, 600, 733, and 800 Hz. The value of the modulation rate was limited to keep all components of the sinusoidal modulation within one auditory filter (17% of the center frequency) centered at the carrier frequency. Two different types of modulation were used: a simple sinusoidal modulation with the modulation depth m set to 100%, and a logarithmic modulation with the modulation depth m set to 50 dB. Results indicate a strong relationship between frequency discrimination threshold and modulation type. The thresholds are significantly higher for logarithmic modulation in comparison to sinusoidal modulation. Amplitude modulation as well as logarithmic modulation applied to the high frequency carrier cause significant increase in the frequency discrimination threshold. For high frequency sinusoidal signal carriers (i.e. close to 10 kHz), frequency discrimination thresholds do not depend on amplitude modulation rates up to about 800 Hz. In general, the excitation pattern mechanism was a primary cue enabling frequency discrimination of modulated and unmodulated signals to compare with the mechanism based on the temporal fine structure. However, the excitation pattern was not the only mechanism responsible for the frequency discrimination.

Phase transitions in n-alkanes were observed by using the positron annihilation lifetime method. In the case of alkanes, application of pressure is equivalent to temperature lowering (1 K corresponds to ≈4 MPa). When argon at high pressure penetrates the sample one observes a non-monotonous dependence of the melting point on pressure. This effect is observed also in even-numbered alkanes, in which there is no rotator phase.

A study is performed on characteristics of lattice dynamics in the initially ordered ternary Ni$\text{}_{3}$(Fe$\text{}_{1-x}$Nb$\text{}_{x}$) (x = O to 10 at.%) alloys using high temperature X-ray diffractometry for the temperature range from 300 K to 1300 K. Aspects investigated included temperature and concentration dependencies of the full mean square atomic displacements Ū²$\text{}_{f}$, the Debye characteristic temperature Θ$\text{}_{D}$, and linear thermal expansion coefficient α. It is found that the Ū²$\text{}_{f}$, Θ$\text{}_{D}$, and α parameters show anomalous change at temperatures where the alloys are subjected to order-disorder phase transitions. It is further found that Nb addition results in the considerable increase in the parameters Ū²$\text{}_{f}$ and α and decrease in Θ$\text{}_{D}$. Moreover, the addition of Nb stabilizes Ni$\text{}_{3}$Fe ordered structure and shifts the order-disorder transition to higher temperature.

Opis:
Hydrostatic extrusion is a modern method of shaping material microstructure and properties. Hydrostatic extrusion can also be successfully used for consolidation of hard magnetic powders. The effect of extrusion temperature, within the range of 700-800°C, on the magnetic properties of the bulk, final product was studied. A commercial MQU-F42 powder, dedicated to hot pressing, was placed in copper capsules and initially cold compacted up to 60% of the theoretical density. Subsequently, the billet was heated in an oven to temperatures 700 and 800°C, respectively and subjected to hydrostatic extrusion. The extruded product had a form of a copper rod, with the Nd-Fe-B core, having 96% of theoretical density (true strain 1.85 after extrusion at 800°C). The extrusion process led to deterioration of the coercivity, for which coarsening of the Nd₂Fe₁₄B grains was blamed. In order to prove this hypothesis, the starting powder was annealed in a temperature range of 550-900°C for various times. The crystallite size, measured after annealing by the X-ray diffraction method, showed that with extension of time and elevation of the temperature the crystallite size increases, however the dominating parameter is the temperature. Correlation of the crystallite size with temperature indicates that when the crystallites are larger than 80 nm the magnetic properties dramatically decrease. Additionally, after HE at 800°C micrometric size Nd-rich phase appear in the microstructure. The Nd is squeezed from the grain boundary of the Nd₂Fe₁₄B phase leading to non-isolated grains, which also contributes to the deterioration of the coercivity.

The structural and microscopic magnetic properties of the pseudobinary $Sc(Fe_{1-x}Ni_x)_2$ system prepared under high pressure of 8 GPa were studied by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer measurements in the range of 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.60. The samples for 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10 have the hexagonal C14-type structure and those for 0.30 ≤ x ≤ 0.60 crystallize in the C15-type structure. Both the magnetic hyperfine field on $\text{}^{57}Fe$ and the Curie temperature decrease with the increasing Ni content and the system becomes paramagnetic for x ≈ 0.60 at room temperature. The form and temperature dependences of the Mössbauer spectra for 0.40 ≤ x ≤ 0.50 indicate the coexistence of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic regions in the samples and occurrence of magnetic clusters with a wide distribution of the Curie temperatures. It is interesting that $T_C$ for the compounds obtained under high pressure are by about 100 K smaller in comparison with those for the isostructural samples produced under normal pressure even though interatomic distances are practically equal in the both types of compounds.
