Opis:
The purpose of this paper is a description of the dispersive dielectric medium, both linear and nonlinear, from first principles using the field theoretic methods based on the Feynman path integrals over classical trajectories. The main idea is to use notion of effective fields, in the present case the electromagnetic field modified by presence of a polarizable medium. Interaction of the field with the medium on the microscopic level is described by a modified Hopfield Lagrangian containing terms corresponding to the electromagnetic field, the matter polarization field modelled by harmonic oscillators with some resonance frequency and other matter fields describing the degrees of freedom responsible for absorption in the medium (reservoir fields). The polarization field is coupled both to the electric field and the reservoir fields. Effective theory is obtained by elimination of the matter degrees of freedom which is achieved by functional integration over all matter fields. For a linear medium all calculations can be done exactly leading to the effective Lagrangian from which, among others, an expression for frequency dependent dielectric constant can be extracted. Explicit form of the dielectric constant depends on the way by which the polarization field couples to the reservoir fields. In particular, uniform coupling to all reservoir modes gives the standard Lorentz oscillator model, and for any type of coupling the Lorentz form of dielectric constant is retrieved for frequencies close to the resonance. For weak damping the dispersion ω(k) is little sensitive to the form of coupling leading to polariton modes not different from those of the Lorentz model. It is also outlined briefly how the functional integration method could be used to description of nonlinear effects in the medium.

Opis:
The paper is devoted to new trends in dispersive control techniques for ultrafast light emission. Acoustooptical dispersive delay lines for controlling the spectral components and phase composition of ultrashort laser pulses are considered. The method of super high frequency modulation of chirped femtosecond laser pulses is proposed. Theoretical approach to dispersive pulse shaping is supported by the experiments.

Opis:
We report on a laboratory EXAFS spectrometer optimized for transmission dispersive mode. Absorption edges ranging from 6 to 20keV can be studied. Factors determining energy range and resolution are detailed. A new asymmetric geometry which allows to use all the lattice planes of the dispersing crystal is described and the choice of the best plane analysed. EXAFS spectra of Cu metal and Cu acetate, obtained on this laboratory facility, are compared to the corresponding spectra recorded on the French synchrotron facility (LURE).

Opis:
One-dimensional propagation of ultraslow optical pulses in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account the dispersion and the spatial inhomogeneity is investigated. Analytical and semi-analytical solutions of the dispersive inhomogeneous wave equation modeling the ultraslow pulse propagation are developed and compared against the standard wave equation solvers based upon Cranck-Nicholson and pseudo-spectral methods. The role of curvature of the trapping potential of the condensate on the amount of dispersion of the ultraslow pulse is pointed out.

Opis:
The installation of the wavelength shifter at the BESSY I storage ring in Berlin makes it possible to apply the synchrotron radiation for white beam investigations of organic multilayers. Considering the energy characteristic of the synchroton radiation source and the absorbance of the beryllium window the synchrotron radiation can be used outside the UHV system for X-ray reflectometry and X-ray diffuse scattering between about 3 keV and 25 keV. Between 3 and 10 keV the synchrotron radiation intensity is high enough to realize the grazing incidence diffraction mode in order to get in-plane information. The capability of the methods is demonstrated at the example of a Pb-stearate multilayer covered by a thin polyelectrolytic polymer layer.

Raman scattering studies reveal the remarkable structure and the unusual electronic and phonon properties of carbon nanotubes. In this study, we directly produced boron, B, and nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes by using DC-arc discharge method which normally can be employed for producing carbon nanotubes. We performed experiments without using catalysts and in the presence of Ar gas for producing boron doped carbon nanotubes. At the second and third stages and in the presence of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ and MgO nanopowders as catalysts and nitrogen gas were used for producing nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes. In general, our investigation revealed that some major changes caused by B and N dopants can be observed in the related recorded Raman spectra.

Opis:
The Goos-Hänchen effect is an optical phenomenon defined as a displacement of the reflected beam of linearly polarized light after the total internal reflection, which occurs perpendicularly to the direction of propagation. Due to this effect, when an optical wave propagates through a barrier, tunneling times may change accordingly. In this paper, we consider the impact of the Goos-Hänchen effect on group delay and dwell time for electromagnetic wave propagating through a nonlinear dispersive slab placed inside linear dispersive surroundings. Numerical calculations are performed for the special case, namely a double negative index metamaterial embedded into a material with a saturable nonlinearity, when a background medium is vacuum. The numerical results for tunneling times are calculated when the Goos-Hänchen effect is observed. It is shown that this approach gives more accurate expressions for tunneling times when the angle of incidence has a non-zero value.

In this work two $Co_{53.5}Fe_{10}X_{5.5}B_{31}$ (X = Ta, W) alloys were synthesized from high purity (≥99.9%) powder elements by means of mechanical alloying. In case of Ta-addition, mechanical alloying resulted in formation of two component material with nanocrystalline phase embedded in amorphous matrix. On the other hand, substitution of Ta by W retards partial amorphization induced by mechanical alloying. High pressure-temperature stability of both alloys was monitored using in situ energy dispersive X-rays.

Opis:
Iron, an important microelement essential to the functioning of the body, plays a special role in the process of respiration. There are more and more new products available on the pharmaceutical market. Some of them were the subject of previous studies, especially by using the Mössbauer spectroscopy. One of the latest is Biofer. For the present tests three tablets from three different production series of Biofer were used for examination of elemental composition using the X-ray fluorescence and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy methods. Information about oxidation of iron contained in the tablets was obtained with by means of the Mössbauer spectroscopy.
