Opis:
The building units of biological systems, the biomolecules, cannot easily be organized or even classified into defined categories. They can be as simple as water or complex as tintin, a muscle protein extremely large with several thousand atoms. To understand their function, one must know their characteristics, where they occur and what they do. One approach to reach such an ambitious task is to determine their structure, as single molecules or assembled into aggregates. Small angle X-ray scattering is the most important method for this purpose. We present studies carried out on several systems, and aiming at different questions about them. We start with lipids, the main components of the cell membranes. These membranes form the cell boundaries, the moiety required for the so-called membrane proteins, but also influence significantly several aspects of biological activity. More complex systems like a muscle fibre is also presented, showing that changes in the structure are related to the movement mechanism. It becomes easy to conclude that knowing the structures and the changes occurring in them is an important way to understand the function of biomolecules and therefore their role in the life cycle.

A new technique of identifying orientation angles of walls of buildings has been proposed in this paper. The present method is based on multilook processing. The aim of this work is to find the relationships between the received signals reflected from uniform targets (e.g. walls, parts of buildings, etc.) positioned at different orientation angles towards the radar platform. The technique is dedicated for synthetic aperture radars systems. It can be used to extend target identification in synthetic aperture radars images obtained by a single-channel antenna. In this paper, theoretical analysis is presented and verified with simulated radar data.

Opis:
In this paper, the effect of tool tilt angle on tensile-shear failure load and weld zone properties for 1050 aluminum plates, welded by friction stir lap welding, were investigated. For this purpose, tool tilt angle was varied from 0° to 5° under the constant other parameters, such as tool geometry, tool rotation speed of 1200 rpm and tool travel speed of 30 mm/min. The tensile-shear test was employed to test the mechanical properties of the joint. Optical microscope examinations, microhardness and temperature measurements were also performed in weld zone of lap joints. According to overall results, the tool tilt angle has a reasonable influence on the joint soundness and weld defect formation. If the tool axis was perpendicular to plate surface or a larger tool tilt angle was used, such configurations had harmful effect for the weld zone. In such case the tensile-shear failure load dropped from 4853 N to 2799 N. Recorded peak temperatures varied from 381°C to 438°C in the weld center. The measured mean hardness values of the stir and heat-affected zones were 31.5 HV and 28.3 HV, respectively, which are lower than that of aluminum 1050 base metal (40.7 HV).

The effect of temperature on a wide-angle paratellurite acousto-optic tunable filter is analyzed on the example of two different acousto-optic tunable filter configurations. The acousto-optic tunable filter operation was between -50°C to +40°C; also the survival of an acousto-optic tunable filter device at -130°C was demonstrated. The phase matching ultrasound frequency varies with temperature. We link this temperature shift to photoelastic characteristics of the $TeO_2$. A generalization is made for all wide-angle acousto-optic tunable filters based on $TeO_2$ crystal. In addition, the temperature influence on the acoustic walk off angle was examined.

Opis:
The photoelectron emission from solids irradiated by X-rays was described by the analytical theory of electron transport and simulated by the Monte Carlo technique. The medium energy electron transport problem is treated by means of a Boltzmann type kinetic equation satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. The solution of the transport equation was obtained in the transport approximation based on the generalized radiative field similarity principle. Simple and reliable formalism was derived for both the differential and the total photoelectron yields. The dependence of the photoelectron yield on the X-ray incidence angle and the "flattening" effect of multiple elastic scattering on the angular distribution of electrons leaving the target are analysed in detail. The photoelectron yields and angular distributions calculated by the Monte Carlo algorithm, based on a realistic differential elastic scattering cross-section, are in good agreement with the results found from analytical theory. It is shown that main characteristics of the photoelectron emission are determined primarily by two parameters: the inelastic and the transport mean free paths.

Within the automotive detailing community, there is much discussion focusing on the application of waxes and sealants to enhance and protect paint, and there are a very large number of commercial products on the market. The general idea behind the application of such products is that a wax or sealant layer or layers can increase gloss and "depth of colour", provide protection against degradation by ultraviolet rays and also make it easier to keep the paint surface clean by shedding and repulsion of rain water. In this paper, the performance of several commercially-available automotive waxes and sealants is examined. In the absence of any available published work, we have used ellipsometry to determine the thicknesses of applied wax and sealant layers and have quantified the water beading effect by measuring the contact angles of water with the wax films.

Small-angle X-ray scattering experiments were carried out on cellulose membranes obtained by phase inversion from a solution of the polymer in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, by coagulation in water and selected primary alcohols. The invariant, Q, and the Guinier radius, $R_{G}$, computed directly from the small-angle X-ray scattering curve allowed us to estimate the pore dimensions and the pore volume fraction. It was found that both content and dimensions of pores depend on molecular mass of the coagulant used. Also, it was found that the dipole moment of coagulant molecules has a large influence on the volume content of the pores.

Opis:
The work presents an application of two scanning optical techniques, i.e. optical profilometry and angle resolved scattering method. The first method measures the light reflected from a film during scan of the surface, while the second method measures light intensity as a function of the scattering angle. The angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry measurements, being complementary to the atomic force microscopy, give information about surface topography. Scattered radiation measured by angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry is a function of height and slope of microfacets. The analysis of images allows to determine the most important statistic surface parameters, like roughness, height distribution and autocorrelation length, in large wavelength range by the determination of power spectral density function. The fast Fourier transform of angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry images permits to determine the distribution of surface features in the inverse space, such as periodicity and anisotropy. In this paper the results obtained for porous SiO₂, SiO₂-TiO₂ blends, TiN and polymer thin films have been presented. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the angle resolved scattering and optical profilometry for the surface and volume thin film inspection.

One way to perform lifetime measurements at a DC positron beam is to pass positrons through a pulsing device. The compressed e⁺ bunches are accelerated to a desired energy for depth profiling of the studied sample. A fraction of the e⁺ that are backscattered from the sample surface can travel back through the uniform magnetic field that is generated along the central axis of the beam transport lines and reach the accelerator. The backscattered e⁺ that reach the accelerator can be re-accelerated towards the sample and re-implant in it with a delay from the initial implanted e⁺ bunch. These e⁺ that are re-implanted into the sample with a delay cause distortions in the lifetime spectra. A setup which uses a bent tube to act as an energy filter to reduce the effect of the backscattered e⁺ is studied by simulations. The simulations are performed in order to find the optimum geometry for minimum distortions.

Opis:
The CdTe(100) c(2×2) surface prepared by ion bombardment and annealing was investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation with photon energies between 8.5 eV and 32 eV. The bulk band structure was determined along the ΓΔX-direction normal to the surface measuring energy-distribution curves. The results are compared with a theoretical valence band structure assuming free-electron-like final states in connection with k-conservation. For further comparison we calculated the final states by the pseudopotential method and analyzed the results in form of structure plots. In this way, most of the dispersing maxima in the normal emission spectra can be explained. For this mode of photoelectron spectroscopy the resulting dispersion must be due to the component of the Bloch wave vector normal to the surface, k$\text{}_{⊥}$, keeping surface related structures at a fixed binding energy position E$\text{}_{b}$. The lack of dispersion for five structures along ΓΔX gives experimental evidence for their surface origin.

Small-angle X-ray scattering method recognised to be very useful in the studies of structural problems of materials inhomogeneous in nanoscale. Studies by small-angle X-ray scattering on the Al-Ag alloys are presented. The size distributions of spherical Guinier-Preston zones were calculated using Vonk's and Glatter's methods. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies were performed on Al-5.0 at.%Ag alloy containing spherical Guinier-Preston zones in theη-state. For this alloy one can assume that scattering particles are of spherical shape, have uniform electron density and scatter independently. Moreover, the size distributions were calculated for Al-1.6 at.%Ag alloy containing Guinier-Preston zones in ε-state (scattering particles with not uniform electron density). Both, Vonk's and Glatter's, methods gave similar size distributions. Profiles of size distributions for Guinier-Preston zones inε-state are more complex in comparison to Guinier-Preston zones inη-state. It is connected with a complex structure of Guinier-Preston zones in ε-state. A modification of the structure model of Guinier-Preston zones inε-state is proposed.
