Rare-earth doped nanocrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, $ZrO_{2}-Y_{2}O_{3}$) is, recently, a subject of studies because of its luminescent properties. The luminescence may be strongly influenced by the crystal structure and microstructure of the material. In this work, the X-ray diffraction study for Pr doped YSZ nanocrystals is presented. The phase composition dependence on the $Y_{2}O_{3}$ content and on heat treatment conditions is quantitatively determined using the Rietveld method and the similarities and differences between the present data for doped samples and earlier reported data for undoped material are discussed. A formation of high symmetry phases (cubic and tetragonal) is observed for high yttria content in agreement with general tendencies observed in literature for undoped samples.

Opis:
The undoped, and Er-doped yttrium aluminozirconate (AYZ) glasses were prepared by flame synthesis in the form of transparent glass microbeads. The $ZrO_{2}$ content was in the range between 5 and 20 mol. %. The prepared glass microbeads were characterised by optical microscopy, SEM, XRD, DSC, $\text{}^{27}Al$ MAS NMR, UV-VIS-NIR and fluorescence spectroscopy. The thermal stability of AYZ glasses, expressed in terms of the difference between the glass transition temperature, $T_{g}$, and the onset of crystallization, $T_{x}$, was not affected by the increasing $ZrO_{2}$ content. The $\text{}^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectra of studied glass samples reveal that Al atoms are predominantly 4-coordinated in glasses. The AYZ5 and AYZ10 basic glasses were doped with $Er^{3+}$ at the level of 1-5 mol. % of $Er_{2}O_{3}$. The UV-VIS-NIR/fluorescence spectra show characteristic absorptions/emissions, due to the optically active $Er^{3+}$ ions in the host glasses. The absorption/emission properties of guest ions are not significantly affected by the glass host.

Nanostructured oxides, like $ZrO_2,$ on $ZnO$ and $Bi_2O_3$ show interesting electronic and photovoltaic properties. Pressed and annealed samples were obtained from nanopowders grown in hydrothermal or plasma processes. Positron annihilation (the Doppler broadening depth-resolved, positron lifetime) techniques were used to trace structural changes in samples after annealing. Photoluminescence spectra of all investigated samples show broad-band emission in the visible, with intensity depending on annealing temperature. The change in nanoporosity and positron lifetimes correlate well with changes in photoluminescence properties. The nature of broad photoluminescence bands is to be understood; further positron studies via the Doppler coincidence method would help in identifying the nature of defects in these samples.

The polycrystalline samples of copper and vanadium doped as well as undoped (ZrO)$\text{}_{0.8}$(Y$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{0.2}$ were synthesized and studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques in order to investigate their structural and magnetic behaviour. The effect of exposure to lithium vapours on the host lattice of these ceramic materials is also studied using EPR technique. It has been observed from X-ray diffraction study that the samples consist of mainly two phases monoclinic and tetragonal. The monoclinic phase is in dominant proportion. Scanning electron microscope study showed that the morphology of the samples is similar to each other. EPR studies showed interesting changes on diffusion of lithium into the lattice of the host materials.

In this work, we theoretically study the use of magneto-photonic crystal for amplification of the magneto-optical effects, to improve the merit factor. A two dimensional magneto-photonic waveguide device, formed by a triangular lattice of air holes, embedded in SiO₂/ZrO₂ matrix doped with magnetic nanoparticles, is used to study the influence of the volume fraction (VF %) on the mode conversion. We have used the beam propagation method (BPM) to simulate the efficiency coefficient in a planar 2D magneto-photonic waveguide. The influence of VF % on propagation length is studied, and an enhancement in Faraday rotation in 2D magneto photonic crystal is achieved, which proves the ability of the structure to produce magneto-photonic crystal isolator.
