Opis:
The Giessen slow positron source TEPOS delivers intense beams in the energy range between some eV and 6 keV; with postacceleration up to 80 keV. Results for remoderation are described shortly. Further the energy-losses of positrons with incident energy of 6-20 keV through thin aluminium foils were measured. Cross sections for K- and L-shell ionization of thin silver and gold targets by positron and electron impact have been determined at projectile energies of 30-70 keV. The experimental results are presented in detail; they are confirmed by calculations in plane-wave-Born approximation which include an electron exchange term and account for the deceleration or acceleration of the incident projectile in the nuclear field of the target atom.

Opis:
Using the scaling theory of quantum critical phenomena we explore the occurrence of universal critical behavior at the insulator-to-superconductor and superconductor-to-normal state transitions at zero temperature. Experimentally, these phase transitions are driven by doping and correspond to critical end points of the phase transition line in the temperature-hole concentration plane. Provided that the order parameter is a complex scalar in two dimensions, and that the London relation between superfluid number density and magnetic penetration depth holds, the scaling theory predicts universal behavior close to the insulator-to-superconductor transition. In particular, transition temperature and zero temperature penetration depth are universally related and the sheet resistance adopts a universal value. These predictions agree remarkably well with available experimental data and provide useful constraints for a microscopic theory.

Opis:
We generalize the standard attractive Hubbard, having an on-site pair creation operator Q$\text{}_{i}$ = a$\text{}_{i↑}$a$\text{}_{i↓}$, to one with n components Q$\text{}_{iα}$ = a$\text{}_{iα↑}$a$\text{}_{iα↓}$, α=1,2,...,n. In the limit n → ∞ we obtain the Ginzburg-Landau functional. On this basis we explore the crossover from weak (BCS) to strong coupling (Bose-Einstein condensation) superconductivity. The associated self-consistent equations for the Ginzburg-Landau parameters are similar to those of the T-matrix approach. The evolution of the band structure with increasing interaction strength is studied and correlated with the behavior of the pair propagator and the transition temperature. We find that the pairing interaction creates a new band which moves downwards in energy as the interaction strength increases and separates into a lower Hubbard band when the interaction strength becomes comparable to the band width. In the strong coupling regime, a third band with small spectral weight is also found in between the lower and upper Hubbard bands.

Opis:
Neutron and X-ray diffraction patterns of α and β powders as well as of sintered SiC were analysed by a multiphase Rietveld method. It is shown that structural models combined of large period polytypes can be used to approximate the disordering of these polytype structures. The hexagonality of the samples could be terminated with reproducibility 1-2% using different combinations of large-period polytypes. It follows that the usual classification into α and β SiC is an oversimplification. The polytype behaviour of SiC powders and the role of twinning of cubic layer stackings is discussed. Distribution functions of stacking sequences of different length in α and β phases are derived.

Opis:
We present combined first-principle calculations and experimental results of the transversal magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) of thin Fe films across the 3p edges using linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. We show that the experimental T-MOKE spectra at the 3p edges of Fe exhibit clear signals that are strongly influenced by interference effects. Ab initio calculated T-MOKE asymmetry spectra confirm the importance of interference effects. The comparison of experimental with calculated spectra reveals some differences that we attribute to metal/metal interface roughness that is not taken into account in the calculations.
