Opis:
The influence of the quadrupole interaction on the shape of $\text{}^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra expected for samples with charge-density waves andor spindensity waves is investigated. It is shown, by model calculations, that both for the commensurate and for incommensurate charge-density waves andor spin-density waves the shape of $\text{}^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra is sensitive to the value, and for asymmetric spectra, to the sign of quadrupole interaction. This necessitates an inclusion of quadrupole interaction when analyzing the spectra recorded on samples exhibiting charge-density waves andor spin-density waves, and having a symmetry lower than cubic.

Opis:
Results concerning the morphology of Cu adsorption layers deposited from vapor under ultrahigh vacuum on Ir tip and the influence of oxygen on this morphology are reported. The method employed was field electron emission microscopy. It was found that the presence of oxygen decreases the copper wettability of iridium. Preadsorption of oxygen on the Ir surface is followed by an increase in cohesion interaction between atoms of the Cu deposited onto the tip at room temperature. Coadsorption of Cu and O on the Ir tip surface at liquid nitrogen temperature, when followed by gradually heating the adlayer, results in crystallization of the deposit in the temperature range from 430 K to about 700 K. Some evidence indicates the formation of Cu$\text{}_{2}$O with a high degree of crystallinity under these conditions. Cu and O coadsorption on the Ir surface at a temperature higher than 1090 K leads to selective accumulation of Cu on the {111} faces and to formation of epitaxial crystals which are oriented to the substrate in the same manner as the Cu crystals grown at ultra-high vacuum from Cu flux containing no oxygen. Oxygen incorporated into the Cu beam interact preferentially with {011} and {001} Ir faces, where it can produce oxide layers.

Opis:
Current density-voltage characteristics were obtained from 2,6-diamino anthraquinone samples using ohmic aluminium electrodes. Results showed that at low voltage the conduction process was ohmic, while at high voltage space-charge-limited conduction controlled by a single dominant trap level was presented. Thickness dependence measurements proved that the trapping sites were located at a discrete energy level. The transition voltage, V, between ohmic and space-charge-limited conduction was approximately proportional to the square of the sample thickness and was found to be temperature independent. The temperature dependence of ohmic and space-charge-limited current densities have been investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of extrinsic nature of ohmic conduction. Traps with density ≈ 2 × 10$\text{}^{24}$ m$\text{}^{-3}$ located at 0.50 ± 0.03 eV below the conduction band edge have been observed.

An iterative procedure of calculation of reflectivities and transmission coefficients of light rays for an uniaxial film with a lapse rate of an index of refraction on a uniaxial substrate was gained by orienting the axis of anisotropy along the normal to the boundary. With its help the dependences of ellipsometric angles Δ and ψ for a linear, quadratic, and sine-shaped profiles of refractive indices of a uniaxial immersing film with optic axis oriented along the normal to the boundary were analyzed. The dependences of angles Δ andψ on quantity of an uptake and anisotropy of the film were also examined. The numerical modelling for ZnO films and Langmuir-Blodgett-like films on a melted quartz was carried out, and this allowed to draw conclusions of practical importance for the ellipsometric investigations of the film structures.

The paper reports dielectric measurements carried out for isatomalononitrile at different temperatures (346 to 383 K) and various frequencies (50 to 5 × 10$\text{}^{5}$ Hz). Kramers-Kronig relations are used to ascertain the magnitude of the dc conductivity and to enhance the reliability of dielectric measurements. The analysis of the results shows that there exist certain very slow dielectric phenomena in isatomalononitrile. The frequency dependent conductivity of isatomalononitrile increases approximately linear with frequency. The frequency exponent has the value of 0.5, independent of temperature.

Opis:
Strong optical polarization anisotropy observed previously in the exciton photoluminescence from [100]-oriented quantum wells subjected to the in-plane magnetic field is described within microscopic approach. Developed theory involves two sources of optical polarization anisotropy. The first of them is due to correlation between ψ-functions phases of electron and heavy hole which arise owing to electron Zeeman spin splitting and joint manifestation of low-symmetrical and Zeeman interactions of heavy holes in an in-plane magnetic field. Other optical polarization anisotropy source stems from the admixture of light-holes states to heavy-holes ones by low-symmetry interactions. The heavy hole splitting caused by these interactions separately and the effects of their interference are analyzed. The domination of C$\text{}_{2v}$ low-symmetry interaction connected with quantum wells interfaces and/or in-plane deformations takes place in relatively low magnetic field. The directions of this perturbation determine main directions of the π-periodical optical polarization anisotropy. The cubic anisotropy of valence band can add the π/2-periodical contribution to the optical polarization anisotropy. In the case of quantum wells with semimagnetic barriers the Zeeman term contribution can reach value, which dominates the C$\text{}_{2v}$ ones, and crossover to polarization connected with magnetic field direction may be observed in low temperature.

Opis:
In an extended introduction studies of alkali adsorption on clean silicon surfaces are shortly reviewed and recent achievements are outlined. The main part describes our investigations of lithium and potassium adsorption by reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS). Beside (electronic) valence electron excitations also core losses of both silicon and these alkali metals were observed in the ionization loss spectroscopy mode (ILS). Additional information has been obtained by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and measurements of work function changes (WFC). The spectra of Li and K adsorption on the Si(100) plane show considerable differences which will be discussed in detail. By simulation of the REEL potassium spectra within the density of states (DOS) model using the Si(100)2 × 1 K DOS by R. Ramirez the origin of the 8.4 and 12.5 eV loss peaks can be traced to band structure features. In addition the known K peaks at 18.1, 20 and 22 eV are confirmed and their behaviour with increasing primary energy E$\text{}_{p}$, was investigated. While the K 3p-K 4s transition corresponding to the 18.1 eV loss increases with E$\text{}_{p}$, the dipole-forbidden K 3p-K 4p transition (20 eV) decreases. Shifts in the loss energy of these peaks as well as in the core loss energies at 295 and 296.8 eV are observed and explained by charge transfer.

Ca$\text{}_{x}$Fe$\text{}_{3-x}$O$\text{}_{4}$ samples, with x ≤ 0.28 , prepared from α-Fe$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{3}$ and CaO by the Bridgman method were investigated by means of $\text{}^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Room temperature spectra gave evidence that the samples were multiphase, the calciomagnetite being the dominant phase with a contribution of 73% to 99%, depending on the sample. Analysis of the subspectra associated with the calciomagnetite gave evidence that Ca-ions reside on the tetrahedral (A) sites and have not random distribution. Their presence on those sites causes a reduction of the hyperfine field at Fe nuclei occupying the octahedral positions (B) by 12.3(1.0) kOe per one Ca-ion and a decrease in the average hf field, 〈H$\text{}_{B}$〉/dx, at the rate of 29 kOe/mol% for x ≤ 0.07 and of 387 kOe/mol% for larger x. In addition, a linear correlation between 〈H$\text{}_{B}$〉 and the average isomer shift, 〈I$\text{}_{B}$〉, was revealed to hold. It indicates that addition of Ca-ions into the magnetite causes a decrease in the spin-density and an increase in the charge-density at Fe nuclei occupying the B-sites.

The magnetic field dependence of the magnetization was fitted to a modified Brillouin function with parameter values that agreed fairly well with those from Curie-Weiss plots. The value of the exchange parameter was larger than in Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Gd$\text{}_{x}$Te. The samples were p-type with carrier concentrations up to 1.3 x 10$\text{}^{21}$ cm$\text{}^{-3}$. The rate parameter K$\text{}_{3}$ of solvent-solute energy transfer and the rate parameter K$\text{}_{7b}$ for solvent-quencher energy transfer are determined experimentally under ultraviolet excitation for a system Ethyl 1 butyl-2-methyl-5 ethoxycarboxy methoxy indole-3-carboxylate (EBMEC) in a deoxygenated system comprising 1:9 mixture of toluene-cyclohexane as a function of temperature in the range of 20-70°C, using bromobenzene as a solvent quencher. The data is analysed in terms of compact equation formed by combining Voltz et al. and Birks and Conte models. The interaction distance for the energy transfer from the excited solvent to solute molecules and solvent to quencher molecules are determined using this equation. The magnitude of the interaction distance indicates that the excitation energy transfer takes place due to long-range interaction in the case of solvent-solute energy transfer and short-range interaction in the case of solvent quencher energy transfer in dilute systems.

We consider the statistics of the impedance Z of a chaotic microwave cavity coupled to a single port. We remove the non-universal effects of the coupling from the experimental Z data using the radiation impedance obtained directly from the experiments. We thus obtain the normalized impedance whose probability density function is predicted to be universal in that it depends only on the loss (quality factor) of the cavity. We find that impedance fluctuations decrease with increasing loss. The results apply to scattering measurements on any wave chaotic system.
