Opis:
The static magnetization measurements and relaxation of magnetization data for two Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$S samples with different composition are presented. The magnetization is described by the modified Brillouin function. The magnetization relaxation shows unusual composition dependence. This behavior is explained by cross-relaxation to the unknown fast relaxing centers introduced during growth.

During the last five years we developed method to calculate crystal field and magnetism of rare-earth ions in solids. The method is fully ab initio with the exception of a single parameter which adjust the position of f states relative to other valence states and it was successfully applied in insulating systems. In this contribution the method is used to explain multiplet splitting and magnetism in PrCuAl₃ and NdCuAl₃ intermetallics. For the Nd compound the agreement between theory and experiment is good, while for the PrCuAl₃ the agreement is less satisfactory which can be due to the more delocalized 4f electrons of Pr³⁺ comparing to Nd³⁺ ion.

The effect of temperature on the magneto-dielectrics behavior was studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the transformer oil-based ferrofluid with magnetic nanoparticles upon the effect of an external magnetic field. The frequency dependence of complex permittivity and dissipation factor were measured within the frequency range from 1 mHz to 10 kHz at different temperatures by a capacitance method. The dielectrics parameters were measured as a function of the external magnetic field in the range of 0-200 mT, parallel to the direction of the electric field as a function of temperature in the range of 15-35°C. The interaction between magnetic field and magnetic moments of nanoparticles led to the aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles to new structures which had influence on dielectric parameters. The dependence of these parameters at constant magnetic field on angle between the direction of the electric and magnetic fields (anisotropy) has been measured, too.

Scanning tunneling microscopy images and scanning tunneling spectroscopy characteristics were measured at 4.2 K in liquid helium bath on the cleaved in air a-b surface of Bi$\text{}_{2}$Sr$\text{}_{2}$CaCu$\text{}_{2}$O$\text{}_{8}$ (BSCCO-2212). Electronic densities of states and superconductivity parameters Δ and Γ evaluated from dI/dV characteristics depend on tip-sample distance s: with shortening of the distance s superconducting gap structure becomes more distinct, i.e. Δ increases and Γ decreases. We explain this phenomenon as a non-vacuum tunneling, where for longer s tunneling electrons reach only the surface contamination layer on non-metallic BiO top-surface layer, whereas for shorter s tunneling electrons penetrate also deeper lying CuO layers reflecting their superconducting properties. The dependence of Δ on s is evaluated. This result allows to understand better the non-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy imaging: by adjusting properly the tip-sample distance one can select suitable local density of states contributing dominantly to the scanning tunneling microscopy images taken on BSCCO.

Opis:
Soft magnetic amorphous Co-based materials prepared by rapid quenching method in the form of thin ribbon are well-known due to their excellent soft magnetic properties as high permeability, low coercivity, and low magnetic losses in kHz range. The amorphous Co-Fe-B-Si material Vitrovac® 6155 U55 produced by Vacuumschmelze GmbH & Co. KG belongs to this class of materials and was investigated in as-delivered state. The aim of this work was to study DC magnetization process by various experimental methods. We have measured magnetization curve by fluxmeter based hysteresis graph and hysteresis loops by three different fluxmeter based hysteresis graphs, exhibiting significant differences. The first and the second hysteresis graph perform the hysteresis loops measurement by the point-by-point method, either with commutative or with summing steps. The third one is AC hysteresis graph working at very low frequencies down to 7 mHz, performing the continuous method. The explanation of this result is based on the structural after effect influencing the domain wall displacement. We assumed that the domain structure consists of very small number of domain walls responsible for magnetization process, which was confirmed by the visualization of static domain structure by a computer-controlled setup based on the Kerr effect.

Opis:
The paper presents dielectric, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of multiferroic bulk composites based on $CoFe_2O_4$ ferrite and $Pb(Fe_{2//3}W_{1//3})O_3$ relaxor. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy observations of ceramic samples revealed two-phase composition and fine grained microstructure with uniformly distributed ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases. Dielectric permittivity measured in a temperature range 218-773 K at frequencies of 10 Hz-2 MHz exhibits high and broad maxima attributed to dielectric relaxation. The hysteresis determined in a temperature range 4-393 K for magnetic field changing from - 80 kOe to 80 kOe is typical of hard magnetic materials. Saturation magnetizations and coercivities were found to decrease with increasing temperature. The courses of zero field cooled and field cooled magnetization versus temperature curves measured in the temperature range 4-393 K imply spin glass behavior of the ferrite and antiferromagnetic transition of the relaxor at low temperatures. The ferrite-relaxor composite shows high magnetoelectric voltage coefficient which distinctly increases with increasing frequency of ac magnetic field and is slightly higher for higher ac and dc magnetic fields.

The Tb$\text{}_{1.1}$Fe$\text{}_{11-x}$Co$\text{}_{x}$Ti (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) compounds with the ThMn$\text{}_{12}$-type structure were studied by using the torque and magnetization measurements in order to investigate temperature and composition behavior of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The Tb$\text{}_{1.1}$(FeCo)$\text{}_{11}$Ti single crystals demonstrated spin reorientation transition from easy axis to easy plane with the decrease in temperature. The substitution of Co for Fe produces an enhancement of the Curie temperatures, decreases temperatures of spin reorientation transition and appearance of canted structure.

We present measurements of the spatial intensity distribution of localized modes in a two-dimensional open microwave cavity randomly filled with cylindrical dielectric scatterers. The robustness of these modes with respect to a modification of the boundaries of the scattering region is successfully established. From a comparison with numerically calculated modes, we can extract precise values of the localization length which are in agreement with the measured spectral widths. These results constitute unambiguous signatures of the existence of strongly localized electromagnetic modes in two-dimensional open random media.

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to study oxidation effects of nitric acid on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface. This treatment was performed at different temperatures and etching times with the aim of realizing local binding sites on the surface without creating deep defects. Then these three technics were found in good agreement to characterize the weakly oxidized surface. A wavy structure different from pure graphite at atomic scale was imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy. This modification was correlated to the presence of carboxylic groups on the surface revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Both spectroscopies of scanning tunneling and X-ray photoelectron demonstrated the vanishing of π bands characteristic from sp$\text{}^{2}$ graphitic hybridization. This was attributed to dehybridization corresponding to new bondings of the graphite carbons in the carboxylic groups.

This work focuses on the high pressure Raman study of carbon nanostuctures comprising of single- or double-wall carbon nanotubes. The detailed examination of the Raman peaks, especially those attributed to the radial breathing modes of the carbon nanotubes, as a function of pressure provides a wealth of information concerning the pressure response of individual nanotubes as well as the internal-external tube (intratube) interactions. The radial breathing modes of both the internal and the external tubes in double-wall carbon nanotubes show reduced pressure slope values as compared to the corresponding in single-wall carbon nanotubes. The reduced slopes for the internal tubes reflect the pressure screening effect inside the external tubes, while those for the external tubes their structural reinforcement due to the encapsulation of smaller diameter tubes in their interior. Moreover, the magnitude of the pressure screening effect depends strongly on the intratube spacing and thus on the intratube interaction. All the experimental observations are well reproduced qualitatively by means of theoretical calculations based on a simple phenomenological model.

This contribution is devoted to study of dielectric and magnetodielectric properties in transformer oil based magnetic fluid. The dielectric permittivity and their anisotropy at various mutual orientation electric (50 Hz) and magnetic field were shown at the different volume concentrations of nanoparticles at room temperature. The linear increase of dielectric constant with volume concentration was confirmed which is in good agreement with the theoretical Maxwell prediction. The dielectric anisotropy factor g(B, ω) is very close to g=1. The values of permittivity increased with the increase of volume fraction of magnetite nanoparticles. The highest value of anisotropy characterized by deviation of permittivity $Δε=ε_{∥} - ε_{⊥}$ was found for the highest volume concentration which could mean that no aggregation of magnetite nanoparticles had appeared.
