Opis:
We report on confocal microscopy imaging of hybrid nanostructures composed of silver nanowires and corroles. Both nanomaterials were separated by a 30 nm thick $SiO_2$ spacer in order to inhibit fluorescence quenching. The results show that for such a hybrid nanostructure the average enhancement of the fluorescence intensity reached 2.5. Importantly, the coupling to plasmon excitations in metallic nanowires leaves no effect on the fluorescence spectrum of the organic molecules.

Opis:
This work reports some thermoluminescent properties of chemical vapour deposition diamond film grown by 5 kW microwave assisted plasma chemical vapour deposition. The 2" diamond sample with the thickness of 32 μm was exposed to gamma radiation in the dose range 0.6-55 Gy. The thermoluminescent glow curve of diamond sample displayed a peak with the maximum centered at 240°C. The linearity of the detector response in the range of 10-55 Gy was observed. The bleaching effect, seen as fading of the thermoluminescent signal when the device was exposed to light in the visible range, was also noticed. Two-dimensional dose distribution was measured using 2D thermoluminescent reader equipped with a sensitive 640 × 480 pixels charge coupled device camera. The surface morphology of the diamond film was observed with scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The grain size was estimated as about 15 μm. The Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize phase purity. The width and position of the diamond Raman band around 1332 $cm^{-1}$ indicated that the coating is crystalline and of good quality. It is concluded that good quality chemical vapour deposition diamond coating could be promising material for thermoluminescent dosimetry.

The aim of this work was to establish the average size of silver halide nanosols. The method applied was based on the optical turbidance measurements in real time of crystallization process. Dilute turbid suspensions of silver bromide, chloride and iodide stabilized by excess of halide ions and gelatin were measured over wavelength range from 450 nm to 600 nm. Experimental results were compared with the scattering theory of Rayleigh. Relation between dosing rate of reactants to dispersion system and size of obtained silver halide crystals was investigated. Interest in crystalline gelatine-stabilised aqueous suspensions of silver halide is due to their application as a substrate for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles.

The results of research into the preparation of silver nanoparticles using photoreduction in the presence of hydroquinone as the reductant were discussed. Substrates for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles were ultrafine crystalline gelatine-stabilised aqueous suspensions of silver bromide. The influence of the reductant to substrate molar ratio and the medium's pH to the efficient production of silver nanoparticles were studied. The properties of resultant silver particles were examined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy was used for the photomicrography of silver nanoparticles suspensions.

Opis:
Heating of electrons by electric fields smaller than that required for generation of domain oscillations was investigated in samples of EL2-rich semi-insulating GaAs. Current-voltage characteristics were measured as a function of temperature between 268 K and 330 K. They exhibit a sublinear shape which is interpreted as a result of an enhanced electron capture on the EL2. The capture rate and the electron temperature as a function of the electric field was determined. A fitting procedure gave the value of electron capture cross-section on the EL2 to be 2.7 × 10$\text{}^{-13}$ cm$\text{}^{2}$ which agrees with literature data.

Opis:
Mechanical alloying was used to synthesize $LaNi_5$-type hydrogen storage materials. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that, after 30 h milling, the starting mixture of the elements was decomposed into an amorphous phase. Following the annealing in high purity argon at 700°C for 0.5 h, X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of the $CaCu_5$-type structures. The nanocrystalline materials were used as negative electrodes for a $Ni-MH_x$ battery. A partial substitution o Ni by Al or Mn in $LaNi_{5-x}M_x$ alloy leads to an increase in discharge capacity. On the other hand, the alloying elements such as Al, Mn and Co greatly improved the cycle life of $LaNi_5$ material. For example, in the nanocrystalline $LaNi_{3.75}Mn_{0.75}Al_{0.25}Co_{0.25}$ powder, discharge capacities of up to 258 mA h $g^{-1}$ (at 40 mA $g^{-1}$ discharge current) were measured. The band structure ab initio calculations showed that 3g sites are preferred by Al, Co, and Mn atoms in the unit cell.

Effect of silicon doping on the elastic-plastic transition of GaAs crystal is demonstrated by results of nanoindentations and ab initio simulations. The performed experiments show that an increase of silicon concentration causes a decrease of the contact pressure at the onset of permanent nanodeformation of GaAs crystal. Ab initio calculations demonstrate that presence of Si atoms in the crystal lattice suppresses the shear modulus as well as the pressure of equilibrium between zinc-blende and rock-salt phases of GaAs. Furthermore, it is argued that the effect of dislocations pinning to Si dopants is essential for clarification of GaAs yielding.

Paper presents utilized innovative setup for eddy current tomography and possibility of its utilization in automotive industry. Described tomography setup is designed for testing axisymmetric objects thus motor valve was selected for exemplary testing. Tests were conducted on motor valve in original state. Afterwards reference defect was created on element and measurements were repeated. Significant difference between tests results were observed, thus potential for utilization in automotive industry was confirmed. Finite element method simulations were applied in order to confirm the measurement results. Calculations were conducted in open-source finite element method software, which solves Maxwell equations in the A-V form. Modelling results confirm possibility of finite element method-based inverse tomography transformation.

Important bioinorganic objects, both living and fossilized are as a rule characterized by a complex microscopic structure. For biological samples, the cell-like and laminar as well as growth ring structures are among most significant. Moreover, these objects belong to a now widely studied category of biominerals with composite, inorganic-organic structure. Such materials are composed of a limited number of inorganic compounds and several natural organic polymers. This apparently simple composition leads to an abnormal variety of constructions significant from the medical (repairs and implants), natural (ecological effectiveness) and material science (biomimetic synthesis) point of view. The analysis of an image obtained in an optical microscope, optionally in a scanning electron microscope is a topographical reference for further investigations. For the characterization of the distribution of chemical elements and compounds in a material, techniques such as X-ray, electron- or proton microprobes are applied. Essentially, elemental mappings are collected in this stage. The need for the application of an X-ray diffraction microprobe is obvious and our experience indicates on the necessity of using the synchrotron-based devices due to their better spatial resolution and good X-ray intensity. To examine the presence of the organic compounds, the Raman microprobe measurements are good options. They deliver information about the spatial distribution of functional groups and oscillating fragments of molecules. For the comprehensive investigation of bioinorganic material structural and chemical features, we propose the following sequence of methods: optical imaging, elemental mapping, crystallographic mapping, organic mapping and micromechanical mapping. The examples of such an approach are given for: petrified wood, human teeth, and an ammonite shell.

Nanostructures created by living organisms, optimized through millions of years of evolution, can be a valuable inspiration for nanotechnology. We employ atomic force microscopy to examine such structures in materials created by common organisms - caddisfly and diatoms. Caddisfly larvae are well known for their ability to spin silk, which serves as an "adhesive tape" to glue various materials and collect food in aqueous environment. Atomic force microscopy imaging of caddisfly silk, performed for the first time by our team, has shown that its surface is patterned with 150 nm extensions - a feature related to its exceptional underwater sticking abilities. Results of force spectroscopy of protein structures found on the surface are also shown. A characteristic feature of diatoms is that they are encased within a unique silica cell wall called frustules, patterned with 200 nm pores, which allow cellular interaction with the environment. We perform atomic force microscopy imaging of frustules in living diatoms as well as adhesion measurements inside pores.

Hybrid nanostructures are often composed of inorganic parts and "biological" ones. Optimized through million years of evolution light harvesting proteins are hard to mimic synthetically. Promising strategy in search for efficient solar cells is an attachment of selected natural protein systems to inorganic quantum dots. Such experimental hybrid structures should have improved charge separation properties. Among the most promising proteins is peridinin-chlorophyll-protein from Amphidinium carterae (PCP). It has a wide absorption spectrum (420-550 nm), optimized for sunlight. The dynamics of this protein, used in modern nanotechnology has been not addressed yet. In this work we present results of PCP computer modeling using a well established molecular dynamics methodology. The CHARMM27 force field parameters were prepared for this protein and all chromophore components. The system was embedded in a box of water, with proper counter ions, and a number of 10 ns molecular dynamics simulations were run using the NAMD code. It has been found that peridinine chromophores exhibit substantial orientational flexibility but a pair Per612 and Per613 is more rigid than the remaining two carotenoids. Orientation and dynamics of absorption and emission electric dipole moments have been also analyzed. Apparently, the architecture of PCP is not optimized for efficient Per-Chl a energy transfer by the Förster mechanism. Several practical issues related to molecular dynamics simulation of similar hybrid nanostructures are discussed.

We report results of investigation on the fluorescence induced in sodium vapour by pulses of laser light tuned near the 3S → 4P transition (330 nm). The fluorescence was observed in perpendicular and parallel directions in respect to the laser beam. A depletion of fluorescence intensity corresponding to the 5D → 3P transition (498 nm) was observed along the laser beam. We explain this effect as a result of reabsorption that is caused by intense population of the 3P level due to cascade stimulated processes. The most intense depletion occurs about 20 ns after the laser pulse and it corresponds to the moment of maximal population of the 3P level.
