Carbon nanotubes can be grown in the DC electric arc, they grow covered by a turbostratic graphite. The mechanism of the tubes growth is discussed. The magnetic susceptibility of samples, which contained aligned nanotubes exhibits anisotropic oscillatory behavior, which is ascribed to spatial quantization of the energy levels.

Opis:
A review of experimental studies of magnon excitations in manganites is presented. Two kinds of techniques: the inelastic neutron scattering (in bulk materials) and the microwave resonance (in thin films) are considered. Experimental studies of spin dynamics by inelastic neutron scattering in metallic ferromagnetic manganites have shown that at low temperature for small wave vectors k → 0 the dispersion relation has a quadratic shape similar to that observed in Heisenberg ferromagnets. However, the above technique although very informative can be used only for sufficiently large samples of bulk materials. A complementary microwave resonance technique allows studying not only bulk properties, but also surface properties. There are two main theoretical approaches used to interpret the spin wave resonance spectra: the volume inhomogeneity and the surface inhomogeneity models. The last one introduced by Puszkarski has allowed for interpretation of the observed surface magnon excitations in thin films.

The investigations were carried out on Sm-Fe-N permanent magnets produced by reactive diffusion method. The magnets consist of hard magnetic phases: Sm$\text{}_{2}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$N$\text{}_{0.86}$ and SmFe$\text{}_{5}$ and soft magneticα-Fe phase. From the comparison of experimentally determined angular dependence of coercive field with appropriate theoretical predictions and from the dependence of coercive field on the external magnetic field determined from the minor hysteresis loops, it was stated that magnetization reversal process in Sm-Fe-N magnets is controlled by the nucleation of reversed domains process.

The effect of nonmagnetic $Mg^{2+}$ and magnetic $Co^{2+}$ doping in Kagome compounds was investigated using DC magnetic susceptibility. The main effect of doping is to change the crystal field parameters. It was shown that $Co^{2+}$ doping increases considerably crystal field parameters in $Ni_3V_2O_8$ while doping with nonmagnetic $Mg^{2+}$ ions decreases considerably crystal field parameters in $Co_3V_2O_8$ crystals.

Ferromagnetic resonance spectra of the La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$ ferromagnetic film deposited onto the x-cut LiNbO$\text{}_{3}$ substrate were investigated in a wide temperature range. The strain was mechanically introduced into the film using a special holder configuration. This leads to a shift of resonance field with respect to that of the as-grown sample. Analysis of the magnetic resonance shift, induced by a mechanical stress, allowed us to determine the magnetostriction constant λ$\text{}_{100}$. The magnetostriction determined in this way versus saturation magnetization could be well described by the Callen and Callen theory suggesting the domination of the single ion crystal field interaction in the sample being in the ferromagnetic state.

Single pulse magic angle spinning ¹³C NMR spectra and the carbon spin-lattice relaxation times T₁(¹³C) were used for the study of morphology and molecular mobility in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) quenched in cold water after melting in a twin-screw extruder. The crystallinity of the quenched sample was found to be comparable with that of virgin material, and the decrease in dimensions of the crystallites grown after quenching was deduced from the single pulse magic angle spinning ¹³C NMR spectra. The spin-lattice relaxation curves for the carbons of the CO, CH, CH₂ and CH₃ groups were found to be bi-exponential, which enables the molecular mobility within crystalline and amorphous domains to be studied. The spin-lattice relaxation times T₁(¹³C) estimated for the carbons of the CO, CH, CH₂ groups show the chain mobility enhancement within crystalline domains of the quenched sample, but the influence of the quenching on the CH₃ group rotation and on the main chain motion within amorphous regions was not observed.

This paper reviews recent progress in the studies of magnetic dilutions on magnetic properties of two frustrated systems: magnetoplumbite-like $SrGa_{12-x}Cr_xO_{19}$ and kagome staircase $Co_3V_2O_8$ doped with Mg ions. In the first group of compounds magnetic properties are determined by magnetic defects arising due to doping. In the case of kagome staircase compounds magnetic dilution suppresses effects of crystal field acting on magnetic ions. In particular, the dilution decreases magnetocrystalline anisotropy and anisotropy of magnetization.

Opis:
Between neighbouring bilayers of lyophilized dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) multilamellar vesicles the total number of water molecules equals 9 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule. One of these molecules is very tightly bound to the lipid molecule, seven are in immobilized (tightly bound) water fraction whereas the last one belongs to mobile water fraction. The rehydration from the gaseous phase of the DPPC model membranes was investigated using hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and high power proton relaxometry. The obtained data for DPPC were compared with these obtained for wheat photosynthetic membranes. Rehydrated photosynthetic membranes differ from DPPC model membranes in hydration kinetics. The average hydration time has a similar value: (22.0 ± 2.8) h (photosynthetic membrane) and (19.8 ± 1.6) h (DPPC), however hydration kinetics was described by one-exponential function for photosynthetic membrane, while for model membrane it shows fine double exponential form. The sigmoidal form of sorption isotherm is better fitted using Dent model than by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller formula. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller/Dent deviation parameter b =0.93 either for photosynthetic or for model membranes. The mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equals ΔM/m₀= 0.017 (wheat photosynthetic membranes) and 0.027 (DPPC). The detected by NMR-isotherm study mass of water "sealed" in model membrane structures was about ΔMₛ/m₀=0.182 (about 7-8 H₂O molecules/1 DPPC molecule), and ΔMₛ/m₀= 0.066 for photosynthetic membrane.

The specific heat of title compound was measured by adiabatic calorimeter in the temperature range 80-315 K. The phase transitions at about 304, 285 and 235 K were confirmed. A new structural phase transition at about 125 K was observed as well as new anomaly on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve at about 318 K. The peculiar multiple character of C, anomalies may be explained in terms of phase transitions or intermediate phases induced by impurities. The specific heat data are in agreement with the independent DSC measurements and with preliminary X-ray studies.

We report the first results of electron beam lithography processes performed on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resists, which have been pre-backed in vacuum at T ≤ 90°C. For such low temperature processing the lithographical resolution is reduced as compared to standard procedures, however, the exposure contrast and adhesion to CdTe and HgTe substrates have been sufficient for the fabrication of sub-μ m quantum devices. Furthermore, the new method of electrical microcontact forming is proposed, based on the local melting and annealing of an indium metal layer, performed with the application of accelerated electron beam. The method has been tested for CdTe/CdMgTe quantum wells using the lithography techniques, the exposure parameters have been optimized by inspecting the morphology of annealed metal film via the in situ imaging.

Opis:
We have investigated thin films of lanthanum manganites epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition on single-crystalline substrates. X-ray diffraction studies show that the characteristic feature of the investigated films is a superposition of fractions with long range atomic order in the basic single-crystalline matrix, and mesoscopic order in the clusterized structure encompassing the Mn-O layers. A detailed analysis of diffusive scattering shows that the size of metallic clusters and their volume concentration in the dielectric matrix varies. In the case of a small size and concentration, the metallic clusters in low temperature behave as quantum dots and their presence leads to a tunneling mechanism of conductivity with characteristic R(T)= const. In the case of large cluster size, the discrete energy levels become smeared. It appears also that the optical, transport, and magnetic properties of the investigated films depend critically on the distribution of Mn$\text{}^{2+}$, Mn$\text{}^{3+}$, and Mn$\text{}^{4+}$ ions in the clusters.

A spin-wave resonance technique was used to collect information on elementary magnon excitations in high quality epitaxial La$\text{}_{0.7}$Mn$\text{}_{1.3}$O$\text{}_{2.84}$ films prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering. It was found that besides bulk spin-wave modes, the spin-wave resonance spectrum includes also the surface spin waves. The value of spin-wave stiffness constant D=156 meV·Å$\text{}^{2}$ was found. The values of the surface magnetic anisotropy on both surfaces and their angular dependence were determined. The experimentally found spin-wave resonance spectra were explained based on the surface-inhomogeneity model. The effect of surface anisotropy on the spin-wave excitation conditions in epitaxial La$\text{}_{0.7}$Mn$\text{}_{1.3}$O$\text{}_{2.84}$ films was investigated. Spin-wave resonance data give an indirect evidence of periodic charge-ordered stripes formation.
