Opis:
Jellium metal surface properties such as the surface dipole barrier and work function are obtained in the linear potential approximation to the effective potential at the surface. The metal surface position and field strength are determined respectively by the requirement of overall charge neutrality and the constraint set on the electrostatic potential by the Budd-Vannimenus theorem. The calculations are primarily analytic and these properties are given in terms of universal functions of the field strength. The results obtained employing the Ceperly-Alder expression for the correlation energy closely approximate those of Lang and Kohn.

Opis:
A comparative study of structural and superconductive properties of semi conductor epitaxial superlattices PbTe-SnTe and PbTe-PbS grown on (001) KCl has been carried out. It has been found that the superconductivity of the PbTe-SnTe superlattices is caused by the stretching strain in the SnTe layers and it may be connected with the relative positions of L$\text{}_{8}^{+}$ and L$\text{}_{6}^{+}$ terms of PbTe and SnTe, respectively in the heterojunction. In contrast to the PbTe-SnTe superlattices, the superconductivity of the PbTe-PbS super lattices is found to be associated with regular misfit dislocation grids which are generated at the interfaces.

Opis:
Due to the pinning of the Fermi energy to a localised donor state in Hg$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$Se the free carrier concentration oscillates in an applied external magnetic field. We measured the resulting modulations of the Hall resistance in fields up to 17.5 T and at temperatures between 4.2 K and 30 K.

Opis:
The electronic energies of interaction of a point defect with interfaces and grain boundaries are calculated, as a function of the distance x$\text{}_{03}$ between the point defect and the corresponding planar defect. These interaction energies are shown to have the same type of oscillations as the corresponding local electronic densities. Therefore the electronic interactions more significantly affect the energy of segregation of point defects towards interfaces when x$\text{}_{03}$ is in the near vicinity of these interfaces, while at large distances the contribution of elastic interactions can dominate.

Opis:
The energy spectrum of a quantum dot made from IV-VI narrow gap semiconductors is studied. The calculations of the energy levels as functions of the dot radius are performed. When the anisotropy of the bare energy spectrum is strong, the energy levels are calculated using Fal'kovskii's adiabatic approximation for multiband systems. When the quantum dot material has an inverted band gap with respect to the host, the low-energy states within the fundamental gap are shown to arise.

The influence of applied mechanical stress on the birefringence of (N(CH$\text{}_{3}$)$\text{}_{4}$)$\text{}_{2}$ZnCl$\text{}_{4}$ crystal in the temperature region of its incommensurate phase was investigated using Senarmonth's method (λ = 633 nm). The value of pinning force for the samples with different defectiveness was experimentally determined.

Opis:
Photoemission spectra for the Cd(0001) surface in the Γ̅-M̅ azimuth were calculated using a multiple scattering method. The emission angle of the photoelectrons θ was kept constant and equal to 35°. The photon energy was varied from 20 eV to 27 eV. The self-consistent potential used in the calculations was generated by the scalar-relativistic LMTO method. A modified image potential for the surface barrier potential was applied. The photoemission spectra show a strong surface state peak at an energy of about 1 eV below the Fermi level.

Opis:
The irradiation of sulphur crystals and films with ultraviolet light induces the change of transmission in the visible part of spectra. It was found that these phenomena exist only at low temperatures (4.2-50 K). The behaviour of optical transparency as a function of time after switching the rumination off was investigated. These dependences are essentially different for the films and crystals. In order to understand the origin of these phenomena the structural investigation was conducted. Very unusual behaviour of darkening kinetics was obtained.

A new optical method for measuring the optical activity of crystals is developed. Temperature dependence of gyration component g$\text{}_{11}$ of ferroelectric lead germanate is measured. The obtained results confirm that lead germanate may be considered as a gyroelectric crystal.

The angular dependence of photoemission energy distributions were measured from single crystal, substitutional disordered alloys Ag$\text{}_{x}$Pd$\text{}_{1-x}$ with x = 0.97 and x = 0.90. The random hybridization between the Ag 5sp band and the Pd 4d state is discussed in terms of complex energies.

Opis:
We report on the first experimental observations of an anomalous increase in the resistance of a semiconductor-super conductor contact in the vicinity of the critical temperature T$\text{}_{c}$. The effect is found in lead-doped InSb thin films having inclusions of lead of 1-3 μm in diameter: The observed effect can be a model that explains similar resistance increase observed sometimes in the high T$\text{}_{c}$ superconductors.

Opis:
The temperature-spectral dependencies of refractive indices and birefringence in wide temperature (77-1000 K) and spectral (250-850 nm) regions in LiKSO$\text{}_{4}$ crystals were measured. The isotropic point of LiKSO$\text{}_{4}$ crystals was investigated. It was shown that annealing and X-ray irradiation display insignificantly the isotropic point to a visible region of spectrum.

Opis:
The investigation of electrical conductivity, coefficient of thermal electromotive force, Hall coefficient, microhardness and mobility in Pb$\text{}_{1-x}$Ge$\text{}_{x}$Te (x = 0 ÷ 0.1) alloys in the temperature range of 77-300 K was carried out. Anomalies were detected in isotherms of properties in the vicinity of x = 0.008. The anomalies were treated as a manifestation of concentration phase transitions occurring in solid solutions of any kind and associated with existence of critical concentration (percolation threshold) at which the uninterrupted chain of interactions between impurity atoms is formed.
