The objective of considerations is both to reach the understanding of inequality according to A.K. Sen and to pose a new query analogous to a heuristic question asked by this Indian author in his Inequality Reexamined: “quality of what?” By posing the question inequality of what?”, the author of this article attempts to demonstrate the importance of such a query for social policy, as well as its complementarity with Sen’s question “equality of what?”, pointing at the same time to specific examples of practical complexity of a process expected to eliminate social inequalities.

Opis:
The problems related to discrimination of women is not treated by Amartya Sen as marginal. To the contrary, the issue of social inequality of women belongs to the mainstream of the Nobel laureate’s interests, and he himself is perceived as a representative of the socalled feminist economics. In this article, I refer to selected household and capitalist market analyses carrie out by Sen and leftist feminists: Ruth Pearson and Sylvia Chant. I find many interesting parallels between the theses formulated by the feminist scholars and the ideas promulgated by Sen, which I juxtapose emphasising a certain common research frontier and feminist objectives. In particular, the text elucidates the following issues: what feminist economics is; what the discussion with classical economic assumptions concerning household consists in; what the discussion with the assumptions concerning the functioning of an enterprise (and women working there) within the global capitalist economy consists in; what Sen’s change in the approach to the issue of poverty consists in. One important thread that accompanies the above considerations is the critique of the paternalistic tradition, which attributes lower status to women than to men.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the analysis of the social situation of the women in Arab countries. In the text were analyzed the data from the areas of education, work and political life in the years 1998–2011 and the texts of the Constitution of the Arab countries. Choosing the scope of the analysis, reference was made to Amartya Sen’s capability approach. Amartya Sen was writing a lot about social situation of women in his articles and he emphasized the importance of education and gainful work in improving the position of women in society. The analysis results show the improvement of the situation of women in Arab countries. In some Arab countries, women have gained a clear right to equality of treatment in the Constitution. Women have gained greater access to education. More women are working professionals, and takes an active part in political life. It should be noted that the situation of women in the various Arab countries is not the same and there are countries in which the changes are not clearly visible.

It seems that some of the facts of the rich and interesting but also very instructive bio graphy of Amarty Kumar Sen, a modern economist of Indian origin, allow to understand better not only his selection of issues from a wide range of the latest economic problems, which differs from many other economists and to which he has devoted his research works, but also to understand a system of values adopted by him. Het article is therefore an attempt to reach the source of thinking of one of the most interesting contemporary economists. Th e author tries to show the deep roots of his economic and social thoughts, mainly derived from the Hindu philosophy but fi ltered through the Western way of thinking, with many interesting references to the European philosophy. The author also attempts to outline a surprisingly rich area of his interests and to draw attention to a social rank of problems undertaken by him.

Opis:
After the fall of communism in 1989 in Poland, a large portion of decision-makers responsible for the socioeconomic transformations held a neoliberal understanding of freedom. This negative construal of freedom does not see poverty as a lack of freedom. A person is free when no other human being, group, or institution coerces her. In other words, a person is free when the principle of noninterference is upheld. Moreover, the interference of the state in the economic sphere obviates freedom. The neoliberal conception of freedom also holds that freedom does not require solidarity or any assistance from others. Thus, a poor person is free so long as he or she is left to fend for themselves without interference from others. This article appeals to Amartya Sen’s conception of freedom to argue that, in contradistinction to Leszek Balcerowicz’s contention, poverty is tantamount to a lack of human freedom. The article describes Sen’s multifaceted conception of freedom, including the differentiation between instrumental and substantive freedoms, as well as the relationship between them. The relationship among freedoms, as well Sen’s conception of poverty as capability deprivation, illuminates the true nature of poverty, which often negates the ability to achieve substantive freedoms. The article also elucidates how freedom in a free-market economy and democracy constitutes both a goal of development and a path to solidarity. Sen’s paradigm also demonstrates that advancing freedom requires solidarity because freedom is in a certain sense a social entity. Sen rightly maintains that the realization of freedom requires solidarity embodied in social institutions, including, at least in some cases, governmental institutions. On the macro scale, Sen’s conception of development and freedom reveals the problematic nature of “shock therapy” used in Poland during the initial phase of the social economic transformations after 1989. In this sense, this article situates Sen’s thought in the Polish socioeconomic context, which also reveals the significance of Sen’s thought more clearly. Finally, the concluding section of the article points to some similarities (and some differences) between Sen’s ideas and Catholic social thought.

Opis:
The article aim is to answer the question whether Amartya Sen’s theory of justice – presented in the fullest way in his book The Idea of Justice (Oxford 2009) – may be regarded as intellectually attractive to legal philosophy. The analysis of this theory leads to the conclusion that it can be of limited relevance to that branch of philosophy. It is connected with the fact that Amartya Sen belongs to such a kind of thinkers who reject the focusing only on the institutions as a means to the realization of justice. Con¬sidering the so-called procedural justice, Sen refers only to the idea of an impartial spectator developed by Adam Smith, and essentially he is not interested in retributive justice. Thus, it seems that the richer theory of John Rawls still remains much more attractive for the jurisprudence. However, in the author’s opinion, some concepts created by Sen may be an important starting point for reflection on law, even apart from Sen’s entire theory. His notions of freedom (which can be adapted, for example, to judge paternalistic regulations) and of capability seem to be particularly inspiring from the point of view of legal philosophy.
