Opis:
Incidence of Armillaria root disease and the population structure of associated Armillaria spp. were studied in 5-17-year-old Scots pine plantations in west-central Poland. Two infection centres (1.14– 9.30 ha) in each of three forest districts (Siemianice, Zielonka and Złotów) were intensively sampled. Root collars were examined for mycelial fans, decayed wood, and rhizomorphs. Twenty two isolates of Armillaria ostoyae collected from epiphytic rhizomorphs from 20 living and two dead trees in the six infection centres were identified with somatic incompatibility group. Only one somatic incompatibility group for A. ostoyae was found. Twenty one isolates produced rhizomorphs on oak-wood discs submerged in a sand-forest soil substrate. Isolates from Siemianice formed the smallest rhizomorph networks and those from Złotów the most abundant. There were 16 different genets among 22 isolates of A. ostoyae distinguished by RAPD analysis. Genetic similarity among genets was 25.6–97.5%. The large diversity in A. ostoyae suggests that sexual reproduction may occur in nature more often than expected.

Opis:
The quantification of biomass carbon pools is important for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to reveal the effects of stand age on biomass partitioning and carbon storage of Chinese fir plantation stands in Dabie Mountains of Anhui, East China. A total of six even-aged Chinese fir plantation stands along an age-sequence from 10 to 50 years were selected. To quantify the biomass of different tree components, 18 trees with diameter at breast height (D1.3) from 6.5 to 35.2 cm were harvested from the different aged stands. Biomasses of understory vegetation, forest floor and standing dead trees were also investigated. Total biomass carbon storages ranged from 57.6 to 211.4 Mg ha–1 in the different aged stands. Tree layer comprised from 93.7% to 96.4% of the total biomass C pools in the different aged stands. The C pools of the necromass were from 1.8 to 6.2 Mg ha–1. Stand age had a significant effect on tree biomass partitioning, with an increase in proportion of root biomass. The root/shoot ratios were from 0.187 to 0.312, which was significantly positively correlated to stand age. The existing plantation stands are still developing and have somewhat high rate of biomass and carbon accumulations beyond the normal rotation period (usually 25–30 years) even over an age of 50 years. Appropriate prolongation of the rotation period of Chinese fir plantation will be effective in maintaining long-term productivity and providing large carbon sink. The measurements provide valuable data for modelling productivity of Chinese fir plantation forest.

Opis:
Somatic embryogenesis (SE) of conifers for clonal propagation has emerged from its earliest beginnings in 1980 to become an integral component of tree improvement strategies. With its capacity for long-term germplasm preservation and scale-up technologies,it is seen to be the preferred avenue to accelerate selection and operational deployment of value-added genotypes. At present, programs for numerous species from the Pinaceae family are underway worldwide, with activities ranging from selection trials to pilot production for plantation forestry. This paper will provide a review of current efforts in conifer SE including cryopreservation, commercialization and deployment strategies, and transgenics. A discussion of challenges and issues is directed at genetic fidelity, intellectual property and future needs.

Opis:
The study examines the factors involved in the successful artificial regeneration of Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. by plantation or sowing in wood left behind in mountain forest stands. The issues studied are as follows: regeneration in stumps, trunks and disks (logs); regeneration in wood at various stages of decomposition; regeneration under the stand canopy and on clearings. The work brings a description of technological procedures to ensure success of this regeneration method.

Opis:
This study compared soil CO2 efflux rates in three adjacent coniferous plantations consisting of larch (Larix leptolepis Gordon), red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) and rigitaeda pine (P. rigitaeda: P. rigida Mill × P. taeda L.) species planted in the same year (1963). Soil CO2 efflux, litter fall carbon (C) and root decomposition rates were measured with soil environmental factors for two years. The mean annual soil CO2 efflux rates (g CO2 m−2 hour−1) were the highest in rigitaeda pine (0.30), followed by red pine (0.27) and larch (0.24) plantations. An exponential regression of the CO2 efflux rates against their corresponding soil temperatures showed a significant (P < 0.05) relationship (red pine R2 = 0.69; rigitaeda pine R2 = 0.67; larch R2 = 0.63). The soil CO2 efflux rates were negatively correlated with soil pH, but the soil water and soil organic C content were not significantly correlated with the CO2 efflux rates. Soil CO2-C efflux rates were correlated by litter fall C inputs in the larch and red pine plantations, and the decomposition rates of 5–10 mm diameter roots in the larch plantation. This result is useful in understanding potential responses of soil CO2 efflux rates with changes in stand and soil environmental factors induced by different tree species.
