Opis:
Interactions between members of microfungal communities of three arable and two fallow land soils and three P strains of Heterobasidion annosum were investigated in vitro. The effect of soil fungi on the pathogen was evaluated with two methods. In the first, the mycelial growth of H. annosum strains was measured and the experimental data were analysed using statistics. In the second, the biotic series method was used. The differences between the effects of soil fungi dominating in arable and fallow land soils were statistically significant. The microfungal communities of fallow land soils inhibited the growth of the pathogen more than those inhabiting arable soils. Evaluation of suppressive effect of the soil fungi on the pathogen with biotic series method showed also far more negative influence of microfungal communities of fallow land soils on the growth of H. annosum strains. Considering the positive effect of chemical and biological properties of the fallow land soils on the growth of Scots pine and highly suppressive effect of microfungal communities of these soils on the growth of H. annosum observed in the presented study, it may be concluded that arable soils left barren for many years are more beneficial for establishing of Scots pine plantations than cultivated soils.

Opis:
Prepenetration and penetration phenomena after inoculation of roots of Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in vitro with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscop. There were no differences in the behaviour of hyphae and in the appearence of mycelia formed by the three IS-group isolates. Four types of the root penetration by hyphae were observed. In the first, the entrace of hypha into root was achieved throught tiny pore formed in walls of the cortical cells. In the second, swellings resembling appressoria were formed by the hyphal tips at the points of contact with the root surface. In the third, the hyphae penetrated cells through holes in eroded areas of roots, and in the fourth by the natural crevices at points of the cortical cell junctions. It is concluded that the different frequencies of the four types of penetration observed after inoculation with isolates of the three IS group should be carefully explained in term of their different pathogenic and saprobic capabilities on pine.

Opis:
The growth of hyphae and prepenetration phenomena on Abies alba roots after inoculation with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscope. Elongated hyphae emanating from the inocula grew indiscriminately across and along root tips and entered the cortical cells randomly, while in subapical root areas they quite often grew along grooves at points of cell junctions. The ridges, folds and depressions seen on the root surface obviously directed the hyphal growth and their further entrance into roots through natural crevices or cracks. Although hyphae of all the isolates could penetrate the roots directly through small openings, the hyphae of the F isolate penetrated preferably more eroded and older parts of roots. A peculiar habit of the direct penetration, characterized by formation a structure resembling infection peg, was observed only after inoculation with the P and S isolates. It is suggested that specifically frequent penetration the roots in eroded areas by the hyphae of the F isolate may be one of the factors connecting with its lower pathogenic capabilities.

Opis:
Effects of elevated temperature and soil pollution with fluorine on host-pathogen relations were studied in seedlings of the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) inoculated with oak powdery mildew (Microsphaera alphitoides Griff. et Maubl.) and control seedlings. The plants were grown for 1month in elevated temperature (on average by 1.6°C) and soil pollution with sodium fluoride (330 ppm F). The above factors did not have any significant effect on nitrogen content of leaves or on concentrations of metabolites favourable to growth and development of the fungal pathogen (total non-structural carbohydrates, including soluble carbohydrates and starch) and those unfavourable to fungi (soluble phenols, condensed tannins and lignins). The elevated temperature and fluorine pollution did not affect the leaf infection rate. However, a significant temperature × pollution interaction was observed in inoculated seedlings. At the elevated temperature, fluorine caused a less severe infection by powdery mildew. This could be due to a direct toxic effect of fluorine on the pathogen or by an indirect influence, resulting from changes in levels of other metabolites, which were not analysed in this study. The inoculation of oak seedlings with powdery mildew caused a decline in the carbohydrate content of leaves but did not have any significant effect on levels of other analysed metabolites. However, it significantly affected the distribution of phenols and lignins in oak leaves. Those compounds accumulated within necrotic lesions and in adjacent cells. Our results do not enable drawing definite conclusions on effects of a slight rise in temperature and a relatively low level of fluorine pollution of the soil on relations between the pedunculate oak and oak powdery mildew. Lower values of the leaf infection rate in seedlings growing in elevated temperature and fluorine pollution suggest that in warmer years a lower level of infection by M. alphitoides may be expected in areas affected by fluorine pollution.
