Opis:
The sensitivity of Betula ermanii tree-ring growth to climate variation over an altitudinal gradient was assessed. Betula ermanii forest grows in the northern slope of Changbai Mountain from approximately 1,700mabove sea level (a.s.l.), andforms the upper tree line at nearly 2,100ma.s.l.. Six study sites were constructed along the altitudinal gradient (1,670 to 2,010 m a.s.l.) and ring-width chronologies of Betula ermanii were built. The mean tree-ring series intercorrelation (RBAR) increasedwith elevation. In principal component analysis, the first unrotatedprinciple component explained77.1% of the total variance, indicating the tree-ring growth of Beutla ermanii over the altitudinal gradient was governed by regional climate. Correlation function analysis revealedthat the radial growth of Betula ermanii was significantly similar in response to climatic conditions. Overall, the low temperatures during previous June, July and during the dormant period (previous October to current May) andthe high temperatures during current June, July andAugust would benefit the radial growth of Betula ermanii. Abundant precipitation during growing season (previous June, July, September andcurrent August), previous November andcurrent May, wouldalso facilitate the tree-ring growth. The reason for this uniform growth behavior in Betula ermanii remainedunclear. Betula ermanii in Changbai Mountain formedrelatively pure stands with an open canopy, which might be partly contributing to the common growth response to climatic signals along the altitudinal gradient, but further work was required for testing this assumption.

Opis:
Eucalyptus maidenii plantations are typically fertilized to increase the yields of eucalyptus oil and timber. However, the application of chemical fertilizers is costly and can cause environmental pollution and soil erosion. Mycorrhiza fungi can facilitate the cultivation of optimal seedlings while promoting the growth of trees. To date, investigations into the inoculation of endomycorrhizal fungi to enhance the productivity of E. maidenii in Yunnan, China have not been undertaken. The species/dominant species of endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii in Yunnan were isolated and iden- tified. The effect of endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii was elucidated. The major species of endomycor- rhizal fungi that affect E. maidenii were ascertained. Bulk soil was collected from an E. maidenii plantation, and the species of endomycorrhizal fungi were inves- tigated. The effect of the endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii were analyzed via a single factor experimental design, where the number of spores of endomycorrhizal fungi in the seedling substrate were controlled. The major endomycorrhizal fungi species that affected E. maidenii were ascertained via stepwise regression analysis. Five endomycorrhizal fungal species were isolated from the bulk soil, with the dominant being Glomus ag- gregatum and Glomus mosseae. With higher counts of endomycorrhizal fungal spores in the seedling substrate, the infection rate and intensity of seedlings were observed to increase, as well as the NPK concentrations of the bulk soil. With the increased nitrogen concentration in the bulk soil, the nitrogen concentration of the aerial components of the seedlings also increased. The NPK concentrations in the bulk soil and seedlings, the second order lateral roots, the root activity, and the seedling height were significantly promoted by the presence of endomycorrhizal fungi (the third experimental treatment). The NPK concentrations of the bulk soil and seedlings, as well as the growth indices of seedlings increased through endomycorrhizal fungi inoculation. The major species of the endomycorrhizal fungi on E. maidenii were G. aggregatum, Glomus multicaule, and Claroideoglomus etunicatum.

Opis:
The quantification of biomass carbon pools is important for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to reveal the effects of stand age on biomass partitioning and carbon storage of Chinese fir plantation stands in Dabie Mountains of Anhui, East China. A total of six even-aged Chinese fir plantation stands along an age-sequence from 10 to 50 years were selected. To quantify the biomass of different tree components, 18 trees with diameter at breast height (D1.3) from 6.5 to 35.2 cm were harvested from the different aged stands. Biomasses of understory vegetation, forest floor and standing dead trees were also investigated. Total biomass carbon storages ranged from 57.6 to 211.4 Mg ha–1 in the different aged stands. Tree layer comprised from 93.7% to 96.4% of the total biomass C pools in the different aged stands. The C pools of the necromass were from 1.8 to 6.2 Mg ha–1. Stand age had a significant effect on tree biomass partitioning, with an increase in proportion of root biomass. The root/shoot ratios were from 0.187 to 0.312, which was significantly positively correlated to stand age. The existing plantation stands are still developing and have somewhat high rate of biomass and carbon accumulations beyond the normal rotation period (usually 25–30 years) even over an age of 50 years. Appropriate prolongation of the rotation period of Chinese fir plantation will be effective in maintaining long-term productivity and providing large carbon sink. The measurements provide valuable data for modelling productivity of Chinese fir plantation forest.

Opis:
Increasing levels of atmospheric nitrogen deposition have greatly affected forest trees. Acer truncatum Bunge has a large distribution in northern China, Korea and Japan and plays an important ecological role in forest ecosystems. We investigated the responses of A. truncatum to a broad range of nitrogen addition regimes with a focus on seedling growth, biomass partitioning, leaf morphology, gas exchange physiology and chlorophyll fluorescence physiology. Moderate nitrogen addition promoted shoot height, stem diameter at ground height, total biomass, size of leaves and chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange performance, whereas extreme level of nitrogen addition did not result in such facilitation. Chlorophyll content, pattern of biomass partitioning, ratio of leaf length to width, leaf water content, and specific leaf area did not change among the addition regimes. The critical amount of nitrogen deposition should be defined in the context of a certain time period in a particular region for a certain species at a special developmental stage. The critical amount of N deposition that weakens total biomass facilitation in A. truncatum planted in mixed soil of yellow cinnamon soil and humic soil is approximately 10 g N m−2 y−1 during the first growing season.

Opis:
Background: Plants have adapted to fine-scale environmental heterogeneity through ecologically important traits, leading to new lineages. This suggests that differentiation of important traits has been beneficial to habitat partitioning among closely related species. However, the pattern of ecological divergences and differentiation of functional traits in combination with phylogenetic relationships have not been widely examined. Material and methods: To illustrate the pattern of ecological divergences of nine Picea species, spatial evolutionary and ecological vicariance analysis (seeva) was used to quantify and test the divergence between sister lineages. Five functional traits were measured in a common garden experiment. For all traits the quantitative convergence index (QVI) was determined. Furthermore, their relationships with divergent environmental variables were analyzed in the context of phylogenetic relationships. Results: Temperature variables (maximum temperature of warmest month and temperature annual range) split at basal nodes and precipitation variables (annual precipitation and precipitation of driest quarter) split at terminal nodes. Conservative traits were leaf mass per area (LMA) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn), which reflected selective retention when ancestors suffered cold environmental separation. Meanwhile, linear stomatal density (LSD), carbon-13 isotope ratio (δ13C) and water potential at 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (P50) were convergent between species, but only P50 exhibited adaption to different precipitation conditions. The nine Picea species exhibit a distinct environmental divergence pattern. LMA and Pn were selectively retained when their ancestors were subjected to cold environmental separation. P50 was an important trait with respect to adaptation to precipitation differences. This research provided a new way of expounding the correlation between environment, functional traits and phylogeny, deepening our understanding of environmental divergence, trait differentiation and speciation.

The relationships among sections and species within each section in the genus Populus have attracted much attention from taxonomists and biologists. In this paper, we provide an overview of the current state of Populus phylogenetics and discuss the origin of some hybrid species. There has been some controversy surrounding the origin of the genus Populus in North America and subsequent dispersal and differentiation in other parts of the world. We present the most plausible scenario based on phylogenetic analysis and fossil records. Sections Abaso, Turanga and Populus are all monophyletic, whereas sections Aigeiros, Tacamahaca and Leucoidesshow some degree of polyphyly. Sections Abaso and Turanga are relatively primitive lineages in Populus. With the accumulation of sequencing data and new analytical tools, it will be possible to investigate more complicated issues concerning genus Populus within a phylogenetic framework.

Shrubs are widespread at higher altitudes and latitudes. Dendrochronology of shrub growth has been intensively studied in the circumpolar Arctic, Mediterranean and Patagonia. However, relatively little is known about shrub growth responses to climate change on the Tibetan Plateau. Herein, we investigate climate sensitivity of Salix oritrepha growth along a north–south (35–39° N) latitudinal gradient on the north- eastern Tibetan Plateau. Four S. oritrepha shrub sites were selected for dendrochronology study. Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to estimate strength of the climate sensitivity of the growth time series at each site. We found that not all of the site chronologies show consistent variations. Despite of this, its ra- dial growth was primarily limited by the July mean temperature across the latitudinal gradient, and warming summer climate tends to increase the growth of S. oritrepha on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.

In this study, we investigated responses of the mid-successional species Acer truncatum Bunge and the late-successional species Quercus variabilis Blume to three solar illumination conditions: (1) constant low light (CL), (2) constant high light (CH) and (3) low light first and high light afterwards (LH). The last treatment was to simulate a canopy opening. Both species exhibited increases in biomass, totally and in part, and decreases in leaf water content, specific leaf area and chlorophyll concentrations in LH treatment compared to CL treatment. For A. truncatum, exposure to high light condition (LH) increased crown area, and decreased root to shoot ratio, stem mass ratio and leaf perimeter. However, for Q. variabilis, LH treatment increased stem diameter at ground height, effective quantum yield, photochemical quenching and decreased maximum photosystem II quantum yield. The biomass allocation pattern did not change in Q. variabilis among three light conditions. With respect to newly developed leaves, no significant differences were found in leaf size of Q. variabilis between LH treatment and CH treatment while that of A. truncatum decreased in LH treatment. All chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in newly developed oak leaves in LH treatment increased compared to those of CH treatment while no difference was found for A. truncatum between LH and CH treatment. A. truncatum displayed a greater overall plasticity than Q. variabilis although the oak seedlings have a greater plasticity with respect to chlorophyll concentration and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. A. truncatum should be a better candidate for vegetation recovery, especially in places with heterogeneous light conditions.

Opis:
Increased nitrogen deposition and biological invasions may be two crucial consequences of global change. Exotic plants often have adverse effects on native plants. However, there are reports of occasional positive interaction between them. Increased nitrogen deposition enhances nitrogen availability in soil, which may facilitate the growth of some exotic plant and decrease the competitive advantage of native plants because of their adaptation to low-nutrient environments. Consequently, increased nitrogen deposition may regulate the relationship between exotic and native plants. A greenhouse experiment was, thus, conducted to examine the effects of increased nitrogen deposition on the relationship between the native Quercus acutissima and the exotic Robinia pseudoacacia, which are both widely distributed in North China. Seedlings of both species were grown in monoculture and mixture arrangements in a pot experiment with different nitrogen addition levels (i.e., 0, 2, 5, and 10 g N m–2 a–1). Nitrogen addition altered the biomass partitioning of Q. acutissima and R. pseudoacacia seedlings, with more biomass allocated to leaves and less to roots. Although R. pseudoacacia seedlings always had growth predominance over Q. acutissima seedlings, Q. acutissima was not threatened by R. pseudoacacia at the four levels of nitrogen addition during the three-month duration of the experiment. A positive interaction between the seedlings of R. pseudoacacia and Q. acutissima was found, and increased nitrogen deposition did not affect the positive interaction. Further studies are necessary to determine whether or not R. pseudoacacia is harmful to native ecosystems and should be limited for forestation in North China.

Estimation of tree biomass is an essential part of studies on carbon sequestration and cycling in forest ecosystem. Small trees grow in the understory and allometric development is different from that of mature trees. However, less attention has been paidto biomass estimates of small trees, especially in mixedforest where tree competition is intensive. Tree allometric equations at both branch level andat whole tree level were, thus, developed and compared for the small trees of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) in a mixedstandin northeastern China. At branch level, the best model for live branch biomass was one which used a combination of branch diameter, branch length, whorl position and relative branch depth. For needle biomass, the best model did not significantly improve the estimate with more variables. At whole tree level, stem diameter at breast height (DBH) was a significant determinant of biomass for different components. Tree height did not significantly improve biomass estimation at all. Tree crown variables provedto be useful for estimating all biomass components except the fine roots. The variable measuring abovegroundcompetition intensity was a significant negative determinant of biomass components except canopy biomass. Comparisons to published equations for the same species growing in Heilongjiang province in northeastern China andin central South Korea, were also presented. Both total aboveground biomass and belowground biomass in our study showed somewhat smaller values for a given diameter than the trees growing in other two places.

Opis:
Soil acidification, fertility depletion, food insecurity, and environmental pollution all are consequences of the extensive use of chemical fertilizers (CF) in intensively managed plantations. Recent studies have shown that incorporating organic manure (OM) to partially replace CF can help to maintain productivity and soil health. There are no reports on integrated fertilizer management of Zanthoxylum armatum, for optimal ecological services and economic profitability. A pot experiment with Z. armatum was performed to investigate the possibility of incorporating OM in reducing CF use, enhancing soil fertility, and increasing plant growth. For this, seven treatments were designed: NPK, PK, NP, NK, OM, MNPK (50%NPK+50%OM), and control (CK, no fertilizer application). The results showed that NPK application significantly (P < 0.05) increased plant growth, soil nitrate-N, ammonium-N and available K compared to CK. However conventional CF application induced soil acidification. OM application raised the soil pH from 5.50 (CK) to 6.58 and significantly enhanced soil fertility by increasing alkali-hydrolysable N (2.3 times), ammonium-N (1.4 times), available P (4.3 times), the activity of invertase (1.5 times), catalase (2.8 times), acid phosphatase (1.5 times), and count of soil culturable microbes (2.9 times) compared to CK. Conversely, sole OM application did not result in optimum plant growth. Integrating OM with NPK (MNPK), on the other hand, not only provided the highest growth comprehensive value (0.84), but also substantially higher soil fertility comprehensive value (0.71) than traditional CF treatments. Correlation analysis also indicated a positive and significant correlation between soil microbes, enzyme activities and available nutrients. Therefore, OM+NPK could be an optimum measure to get maximum benefits regarding soil fertility, growth of Z. armatum, fertilizer savings and sustainable agroecology.
