Opis:
The geographic distribution and occurrence conditions of Juniperus thurifera subsp. africana in Morocco were studied. The literature and herbaria data, together with field observations formed the basis of detailed maps of distribution of the species in the Middle and High Atlas and allow us to analyze its vertical distribution. The taxon occurs in the sub-arid and arid zones of the Middle and High Atlas with a separate population in the Anti-Atlas, mostly between altitudes 2000 and 2700 m, with an altitudinal maximum at 3400 m and a minimum at 1700 m. It forms forests in the area of about 30 000 ha. In many places of the High Atlas it is the only wood source for local populations. It is strongly endangered because of over exploitation of the wood, over pasturing and lack of seedlings and young specimens.

The 153 taxa of trees and shrubs were reported from the Stołowe Mts. Two species (Betula nana and Erica tetralix) were reported probably by mistake, and 7 are now extinct (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Chamaecytisus ratisbonensis, Genista pilosa, Lembotropis nigricans, Rosa agrestis, Salix lapponum, Salix myrtilloides). The other 144 taxa of trees and shrubs were found in the natural and semi-natural site conditions. The 110 native taxa and 34 anthropophytes are forming the contemporary woody flora. The 44 native taxa belong to various local red data book categories (including extinct),the 63 are not endangered and next 10 are apophytes. A few altitudinal groups of species can be distinguished, which are characterized with specific reaction to the growth of the altitude of localities. The distinct limit in the altitudinal ranges of the woody species occur at elevation of 580-600 m. This altitude was considered as the limit between submontane and montane belts in the Stołowe mountains.

Opis:
Cerasus fruticosa is a rare and endangered plant species in Poland. In northern part of the country it occurs on scattered localities of relic, early Holocene (preboreal) character. Most of the species stands known from the end of 19th century have disappeared in the last decades. All data, revised in the field 40 years ago, were checked in 2000-2002. The species survived on 6 localities of 14 ones, confirmed in sixteenth. The hybridization between C. fruticosa and C. vulgaris is one of the main reasons of extinction of the first species. The floristic composition of plant communities with C. fruticosa was examined and compared with relevant literature. The regression of photophilous and thermophilous plant species, characteristic for associations with C. fruticosa and moderate invasion of synanthropic ones were observed.

The natural population of yew in the Knyazhdvir Nature Reserve was described and its status has been analyzed. It was stated that more than 22 000 specimens of yew grow there and it is the most numerous population of the species in Ukraine. The most important factor for Taxus baccata occurrence there are the presence of calcium carbonate and humidity of the soils. The height and diameter structures of the population indicate that the population is in progress. The largest specimens in 1976 were of 12 m high and of 30 cm dbh. The natural regeneration is satisfactory. The increment of height of the yew was greater in the conditions of less density of the canopy of beech-fir stand under which the species grows.

Genetic differences between two populations of P. uliginosa from Batorów and Węgliniec were assessed on the basis of 15 allozyme loci. The level of genetic differentiation between them was also compared with genetic differences among the three closely related pine taxa: P. uliginosa, P. sylvestris and P. mugo. A high level of genetic variation was found in both populations of P. uliginosa. The average (Na) and effective (Ne) numbers of alleles per locus amounted respectively to 2.47 and 1.50 in Węgliniec and to 2.67 and 1.52 in Batorów and the percentage of polymorphic loci was 80% and 87%, respectively. Close relationship between the three studied species were confirmed. The genetic differences between the two populations of P. uliginosa were substantial, as the Nei's genetic distance between the two populations (D = 0.040) was larger than between populations of P. sylvestris and between populations of P. mugo. The relatively high level of genetic differentiation between P. uliginosa populations may result from their isolation, small size and possibly different origin of these populations.

The genetic diversity within and among twelve populations (379 individuals) of Pinus mugo from the Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps was analyzed using ten chloroplast microsatellite markers. A stepwise mutation model (SMM) for microsatellite loci was used in order to estimate divergence between populations and provenances from three mountain ranges. High levels of genetic diversity and significant differentiation were found among the three population groups. The populations from Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps were strongly differentiated between each other, while differences among populations within these massifs were much lower. The pattern of genetic structure observedin dwarf mountain pine can be characteristic in conifers with a disjunctive geographic distribution. The significant genetic structuring among isolated parts of the geographic range of the species may be a result of an ancient fragmentation andlong lasting geographic isolation between the Giant Mts., Alpine and Tatra populations of P. mugo.

Opis:
Pinus mugo occurs only in the highest mountain chains of the Ukrainian East Carpathians. The largest part of the species area covers the Chornokhora ridge and the highest ridges of the Gorgany. In the other mountains of Ukraine it does not form thicket on so large terrains. Vertically, most of localities are placed at an elevation between 1400 and 1900 m, with maximum at 2010 m in the Chornokhora and with minimum about 700–800 m. The latter stands were reported from the peat bogs, however, the most of them have been destroyed and do not exist now. The dwarf mountain pine forms the community of Pinetum mugo, formed exclusively on the substrata not containing calcium dioxide. The species is connected with northern exposures. The area of distribution of Pinus mugo has been strongly reduced during centuries and association Pinetum mugo transformed into pastures.

Opis:
The Cecilian pine (Pinus ceciliae) is endemic to Balearic islands (Spain). It is a small taxon, some- times treated as synonym of Aleppo pine (P. halepensis), to which is closely related, differing mainly with dense crown shape and upright branches. The other characteristics, which differ between P. ceciliae and P. halepensis concern the cone scale and needle length only. We examined biometrically needles of Cecilian pine from Mallorca (5 tress) and Menorca (9 trees) islands, and compared them to Aleppo pine populations rep- resented by 30 trees from each island. Each tree was represented by 5 needles, and they were studied with respect to 17 morphological and anatomical characteristics. We detected that needles of the Cecilian pine were smaller, but only when compared to the Aleppo pine from the same island. In general, this difference was also observed in the number of resin canals, number of stomata and stomatal rows. Interestingly, the proportions of the needle dimensions pattern were similar in both taxa. In conclusion we stated the results support the taxonomic rank of Cecilian pine as a variety, Pinus halepensis var. ceciliae (Llorens & L.Llorens) L.Llorens, Fl. Països Catalans, 1: 197 (1984)

We present a study of the distribution, ecology and conservation status of Cupressus atlantica, an endemic tree of the High Atlas (Morocco). The main populations of this species grow in a reduced area along the N’Fiss valley in the Central High Atlas and are gradually receding. Particular populations are increasingly fragmented and the total area covered by the cypress woodland has decreased to less than a third of the surface occupied in the 1930s. Overgrazing reduces the woodlands’ regenerative capacity, and the exploitation of the wood, linked to traditional uses by the rural society of the N’Fiss valley, directly reduces the number of trees. Great efforts being made to protect the species by the Haut Commissariat aux Eaux et Forêts are having some effect in recent years.

The intra- and inter-population variation in three populations of Juniperus excelsa, two from Crimea and one from the Balkan Peninsula, were analyzed biometrically. Fourteen morphological characters of cones, seeds, shoots and leaves were used. The number of seeds per cone appears to be the most variable character. The others were more stable. Differences among particular individuals within the samples were slight, as well as between populations compared. The Crimean samples were very close to each other, while the more geographically distant sample from the Balkan Peninsula appears also to be morphologically more separate. This suggests that the Balkan populations originated from another Pleistocene refugium. The Crimean populations did not show the reduction of variability, which could have resulted from their geographical isolation and their considerably restricted numbers of individuals.

The biometrical comparison of nine populations of Juniperus phoenicea from the western part of the species geographic range was the aim of the present study. Seven features of the cones and seeds, two of the shoots and leaves and eight proportions were studied biometrically and analysed using statistical methods. Two of analyzedpopulations, supposedto be representatives of J. phoenicea subsp. phoenicea, are closely related each other. The seven other populations representing J. phoenicea subsp. turbinata, appearedmuch more variable andd ifferedeach other at higher level. The results confirm the biochemical andgenetic differentiation of the species, however, it can partly be an effect of smaller number of comparedpopulations of subsp. phoenicea. The individuals included into each of distinguished subspecies are different and only a few individuals of subsp. turbinata from the Atlantic coast in Portugal were foundto be joinedinto the group of subsp. phoenicea. The differences between populations of subsp. turbinata are higher than between those of subsp. phoenicea. The most distant population of the subsp. turbinata, from Cabo Rizuto in Italy appears also the most different from all the other. It results probably from the isolation for a longer time.

Rhododendron ferrugineum occurs in the mountains of the Central Europe with large disjunction in geographic range between Pyrenees and Alps and between Alps and Sudetes. We expect that these discontinuities in the species occurrence should involved their phenotypic differentiation, similar as described on the studies of molecular markers. The aim of the study was verification of phenotypic differences between the species populations from the Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes. We examined characters of leaves and capsules from 13 populations, each represented by 25–30 individuals, using ANOVA, discrimination analysis, principal components analysis and agglomeration on the closest Euclidean distances. Every from examined characters of leaves and capsules except of apex angle of a capsule valve and capsule valve shape differentiated between populations at P≤0.001. Despite, range of character variation differentiating even at the highest level overlapped between populations. The analysis of discrimination, principal component analysis and agglomeration gave similar results indicating differences between populations from Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes. However, the differences between individuals did not allow distinguish regions. The morphological characteristics of the leaves and capsules allowed to distinguish among populations of R. ferrugineum from the Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes, and the pattern of their phenotypic differentiation was similar to that described based on genetic markers. The relict population from the Sudetes is phenotypically more similar to the populations from the Pyrenees and the Western Alps than to the spatially closest populations from the Eastern Alps.

Opis:
Zelkova carpinifolia is a relict tree occurring in refugial zones of south-western Eurasia. The main aim of the study was the biometrical comparison of the leaf characteristics of the species sampled in three regions of Transcaucasia. We aimed to test the hypotheses that (1) leaves from vegetative (L) shoots would be larger and more variable than those from fertile (S) shoots, (2) the leaves from the same shoot type express geographic patterns of morphological differentiation, similar to pattern described for genetic markers and (3) to verify the systematic position of Z. hyrcana and Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The plant material was collected from 5 populations of Z. carpinifolia, one of Z. hyrcana and one of Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The total 1482 leaves, 713 from L- and 769 S-type were measured using 26 characters. Our results show very high level of differences between leaves from the L- and S-type of shoots. The majority of leaf characters did not reveal dependence neither on geographic latitude, longitude and altitude nor on the basic climatic data. The results of multivariate analyses of S leaves revealed three group of populations, namely from (1) Colchis, (2) eastern Caucasus (3) Talysh. Thus, our biometric analyses revealed similar pattern to the haplotypic differentiation of Z. carpinifolia detected using chloroplast markers described in the literature. We did not detected significant differences in the leaf characters between supposed Z. hyrcana and/or Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis, when compared to Z. carpinifolia, thus not confirming their separate taxonomic status.
