Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) forests in Slovenia are experiencing widespread mortality. Changes in lowlands reflect in decline of complete forest complexes, high mortality, uneven stand structure and associated forest regeneration problems. Prediction of the present-tree response in disturbed forest ecosystems may significantly contribute to better guideline policies for the silvicultural and forest management practice in the changing environment in both stressed and stabile forest ecosystems. On pedunculate oak floodplain site two groups of vital and declining trees were selected according to the ICP methodology. During three consequent vegetation periods (2006, 2007 and 2008), ecophysiological response of trees in controlled conditions (maximal photosynthetic rates – Amax, water conditions) were recorded and compared with radial growth (tree ring width, pointer years). Growth was compared with meteorological data from closest meteorological stations to recognize and define tree response to changing growing conditions in all groups. Significant differences in light response (Amax) between declining and vital trees were observed as well as in water use efficiency (WUE) and in pre-dawn water potential (Ψpd). Beside the differences in tree-ring width, a significant difference in the year-to-year variability of tree-rings between both studied oak groups was confirmed. Vital oaks in floodplains responded positively to above average precipitation in May and June, while declining oaks with very narrow rings, usually consisting of only one row of vessels, responded negatively to above average temperature in March.

Changing climatic conditions can have various consequences for forest ecosystems, from increasing frequencies of forest fires, ice and windstorm events to pathogen outbreaks and mass mortalities. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was chosen for the evaluation of drought impact on the radial growth of trees after extensive preliminary testing of various calculated monthly climate parameters from the CARPATCLIM database. SPI was calculated for periods between 3 and 36 months for different sites (lowland and mountainous parts of Serbia, Southeast Europe), from which Quercus robur, Q. cerris, Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris samples were acquired. Bootstrapped Pearson’s correlations between SPI monthly indices and radial growth of tree species were calculated. We found that 12-month SPI for summer months may be a good predictor of positive and negative growth of different species at different sites. The strongest positive correlations for five of six tree-ring width chronologies were between 12-month June and 14-month September SPI, which implies that high growth rates can be expected when the autumn of the previous year, and winter, spring and summer of the current year, are well supplied with precipitation, and vice versa (low precipitation in given period/low growth rates).

The aims of the study were to determine the effect of temperatures and precipitation on the ring width and to compare the results with the results of previous studies conducted in other mountain ranges of the Czech Republic. The research was performed in the central part of the Ceskomoravská Upland in the vicinity of Herálec municipality in selected 70- up to 110-year-old spruce stands at altitudes from 680ma.s.l. to 779 m a.s.l. Measuring of tree-ring widths and synchronization of individual ring series were conducted in PAST4. The age trend was removed by ARSTAN and climatic effects were modelled in DendroClim2002. The correlation of tree-ring width with monthly precipitation is positive and statistically significant for July of the previous year and for the entire summer period from June to September of the current year. The correlation of tree-ring width with mean monthly temperatures is negative and statistically significant for July and September and positive and statistically significant for October of the previous year. Negative correlation was also found for temperatures of the entire summer period from June to September of the previous year. The regional tree-ring chronology mainly shows two periods of highly reduced increment: from 1992 to 1996 and from 2003 to the end of the analysed period. The results thus confirm the hypothesis that the tree-ring width is in positive correlation with summer precipitation and negative correlation with summer temperatures. Also the results of the habitual diagnostics have shown a relatively low degree of crown transformation which indicates a weak or short-term stress load.

In central Amazonia, annual rainfall distribution is characterized by a short mild dry season which is associated with a slight increase in irradiance and decline in relative humidity, but the effect of variations in these variables on tree growth is still unclear. The objective of this study was to determine how tree growth responds to monthly variations in some climate variables in central Amazonia. Trees of Protium hebetatum Daly (18–20 m tall) and Eschweilera collina Eyma (19–27 m tall) were used in the study and monthly growth rates were measured during 36 months (2010–2012). We also measured irradiance, temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity (RH). Eschweilera and Protium grew at similar rates (0.0557 mm month–1). Temperature and irradiance had no effect on tree growth of these species, but there was a trend for tree growth to increase with increasing both monthly rainfall and minimum relative humidity. If the dry season becomes longer and dryer in response to climate change one can expect that trees currently sensitive to mild drought stress will be the more affected.

Shrubs are widespread at higher altitudes and latitudes. Dendrochronology of shrub growth has been intensively studied in the circumpolar Arctic, Mediterranean and Patagonia. However, relatively little is known about shrub growth responses to climate change on the Tibetan Plateau. Herein, we investigate climate sensitivity of Salix oritrepha growth along a north–south (35–39° N) latitudinal gradient on the north- eastern Tibetan Plateau. Four S. oritrepha shrub sites were selected for dendrochronology study. Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to estimate strength of the climate sensitivity of the growth time series at each site. We found that not all of the site chronologies show consistent variations. Despite of this, its ra- dial growth was primarily limited by the July mean temperature across the latitudinal gradient, and warming summer climate tends to increase the growth of S. oritrepha on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.

Opis:
Cypress (Cupressus funebris Endl.) is an important tree species in the subtropical regions of China; it is also a major tree species for afforestation and forest land restoration under low-fertility soil conditions. Cypress is considered a calcicolous tree, and its growth and development can be promoted significantly by exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) in the soil. However, most of the subtropical regions have low-fertility acidic soils, in which Ca2+ gradually becomes a limiting element for Cypress growth. In this study, different concentrations of Ca2+ fertilizer were added under fertile soil (3 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) and low-fertility soil (0 g kg−1 NPK fertilizer added) conditions. Cypress clones responded differently to Ca2+ addition in different soil conditions. The seedling height and dry matter quality of Cypress in fertile soil were significantly greater than those in low-fertility soil, but plant height and dry biomass did not differ significantly among Ca2+ treatments. The accumulation efficiencies of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and Ca all differed significantly among the Ca2+ treatments. In low-fertility soil, the addition of 3 g kg-1 Ca2+ significantly promoted development of roots 0.5–2 mm in diameter, and both the C1 and C2 clones achieved their highest N, P and Ca accumulation efficiencies. When the Ca2+ concentration increased to 6 g kg−1, the seedling height, dry matter quality and root development were lower than those of the 3 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. In the fertile soil, the addition of Ca2+ significantly inhibited development of roots 0.5–1 mm in diameter. The highest N accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 0 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment, and the highest Ca accumulation efficiency was achieved under the 6 g kg−1 Ca2+ treatment. Seedling height, root dry weight, roots 0–1.5 mm in diameter and Ca accumulation showed a significant interaction effect between NPK fertilizer and Ca2+. Therefore, Ca accumulation was more efficient in low-fertility soils. Under low-fertility soil conditions, the addition of CaSO4 can promote the root development of seedlings and advance and prolong the fast growth period of seedling height. Cypress clones can be used as an important tree species for afforestation under low-fertility soil conditions, especially under calcareous soil conditions.

Plant breeders have focused much attention on polyploid trees because of their resistance for forestry. To evaluate the impact of intraspecies genome duplication on NaHCO3 stress, a series of Betula platyphylla autotetraploids and diploids were generated from the same family. The growth, proline content and proline-associated gene expression of these autotetraploid individuals were compared with those diploid trees. Autotetraploids were superior in injury index and relative growth of height and base diameter compared to diploids. The proline content was higher in autotetraploid individuals compared to diploids. Gene expression data revealed autotetraploids were generally higher expression in BpP5CS1, BpP5CS2, Bp- P5CR1, BpP5CR2, BpP5CR3 and BpOAT and were lower expression in BpProDH and BpP5CDH compared to diploid trees. These results shed light on resistance variation in birch autotetraploidization and polyploidy breeding as a new approach for genetic improvement of birch trees.

The relationship between tree-ring growth and climate in Quercus brantii, a widespread and dominant tree species in Zagros-Anti-Taurus Mountains, was investigated by both age-dependent and independent approaches. A total number of 118 trees were sampled in a region where severe Mediterranean climate prevailed. An overall chronology plus three age-dependent chronologies of <80, 80 to 160 and >160 years old were constructed to study growth-climate relationships based on an integrated approach of principle component stepwise regression followed by complementary response function analysis. High age heterogeneity of overall chronology diminished its climatic signals and growth priority was significantly presented in the models. Biennial and triennial precipitation variations were highly related with annual tree ring growth of young and old oaks, respectively. However, hot growing season negatively affected all age-dependent chronology indices. By increasing tree ages the negative effects of warm autumn prior to growth decreased and late winter fall became a limiting climatic factor in old trees. Results of response function analysis also revealed that all oak trees from each age classes were sensitive to increasing April temperature. It’s anticipated that, regarding the trends of late frost, this species will face with many challenges in this region and similar areas.
