Opis:
A great emphasis has been placed on biochar addition to soils to improve its physical, chemical, and biological properties in recent times in order to achieve improved crop growth and yields. The present study explored to soil physical changes through different plant growth stages caused by biochar addition to silt loam soil in a pot-experiment. Our research focused on changes in soil bulk density, aggregate size distribution, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. The soils were amended with different amounts of biochars (control with 0, BC0.5 with 0.5%, BC2.5 with 2.5%, and BC5.0 with 5.0% biochar, by weight). Capsicum annuum L. were planted at a two-four leaf stage. Soil samples were taken at 6, 10 and 12 weeks after planting. The biochar amendment resulted in a significant decrease in soil bulk density values. Soil saturated hydraulic conductivity values ranged between 5.5 and 7.9 times higher for all treatments compared to the controls.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to show how the shape of sand particles affects the results of particle size distribution obtained by the laser diffraction method. On the basis of the results obtained one can conclude: the shape of the investigated particles influences particle size distribution obtained by the laser diffraction method. This phenomenon occurs in the sand fraction, as shown in our investigation. The importance of this effect depends on the type of the measured material and on the aim of the investigations. For most researchers in soil science and sedimentology who investigate sand fractions, this impact can be negligible. Further investigations with other soil and sediment fractions are needed.

Opis:
There are global aspirations to harmonize soil particle- size distribution data measured by the laser diffraction method and by traditional sedimentation techniques, e.g. sieve-pipette methods. The need has arisen therefore to build up a database, containing particle-size distribution values measured by the sieving and pipette method according to the Hungarian standard (sieve-pipette methods-MSZ) and the laser diffraction method according to a widespread and widely used procedure. In our current publication, 155 soil samples measured with sieve-pipette methods-MSZ and laser diffraction method (Malvern Mastersizer 2000, HydroG dispersion unit) were compared. Through the application of the usual size limits at the laser diffraction method, the clay fraction was under- and the silt fraction was overestimated compared to the sieve-pipette methods-MSZ results, and subsequently the soil texture classes were determined according to the results of both methods also differed significantly from each other. Based on our previous experience, the extension of the upper size limit of the clay fraction from 2 to 7 μm increases the comparability of sievepipette methods-MSZ and laser diffraction method, in this way the texture classes derived from the particle-size distributions were also more in accordance with each other. The difference between the results of the two kinds of particle-size distribution measurement methods could be further reduced with the pedotransfer functions presented.

The comparison of particle size distributions measured by sedimentation methods and laser diffraction shows the underestimation of the fine (clay) fraction. This is attributed mainly to the shape of clay particles being different than spherical. The objective of this study was to demonstrate differences in the results of particle size distributions of soils determined with the method of laser diffraction using two different dispersion units of the Malvern Mastersizer 2000.

Opis:
The prediction of cation exchange capacity from readily available soil properties remains a challenge. In this study, firstly, we extended the entire particle size distribution curve from limited soil texture data and, at the second step, calculated the fractal parameters from the particle size distribution curve. Three pedotransfer functions were developed based on soil properties, parameters of particle size distribution curve model and fractal parameters of particle size distribution curve fractal model using the artificial neural networks technique. 1 662 soil samples were collected and separated into eight groups. Particle size distribution curve model parameters were estimated from limited soil texture data by the Skaggs method and fractal parameters were calculated by Bird model. Using particle size distribution curve model parameters and fractal parameters in the pedotransfer functions resulted in improvements of cation exchange capacity predictions. The pedotransfer functions that used fractal parameters as predictors performed better than the those which used particle size distribution curve model parameters. This can be related to the non-linear relationship between cation exchange capacity and fractal parameters. Partitioning the soil samples significantly increased the accuracy and reliability of the pedotransfer functions. Substantial improvement was achieved by utilising fractal parameters in the clusters.

Opis:
For several years now the Polish Normalisation Committee (PKN) has been angaged in the process of introduction (and implementation) of international standards complying with the Internationsl Standard Organsation (ISO) into the set of of Polish Standards. At present, in the PKN Commission of Soil Physics, a number of such standards are being prepared (translated) -including a very comprehensive standard dealing with partiele size distribution determination in soil material-ISO 11277 [6], Some principles and requirements included in this standard differ significantly from those commonly accepted and widely in use now in numerous pedologie laboratories in Poland [7,8]. Below there are some of the most important differences: (1 ) the requirement to remove organic matter from test samples (using 30% v/v solution of H2O2), (2) the requirement to remove water soluble salts and gypsum (to electrical conductivity 0,4 dS/m), (3) sample dispersion process must be longer than 18 hours. Many other requirements, of relatively lesser importance, in many cases also do not correlate with those commonly accepted in our laboratories.

Opis:
The water conductivity of arctic zone soils derived in different micro-relief forms was determined. The greatest water conductivity at the 0-5 cm depth for the higher values of water potentials (> -7 kJ m-3) was shown by tundra polygons (Brunic-Turbic Cryosol, Arenic) – 904-0.09 cm day-1, whereas the lowest were exhibited by Turbic Cryosols – 95-0.05 cm day-1. Between -16 and -100 kJ m-3, the water conductivity for tundra polygons rapidly decreased to 0.0001 cm day-1, whereas their decrease for the other forms was much lower and in consequence the values were 0.007, 0.04, and 0.01 cm day-1 for the mud boils (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), cell forms (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), and sorted circles (Turbic Cryosol (Skeletic)), respectively. In the 10-15 cm layer, the shape of water conducti-vity curves for the higher values of water potentials is nearly the same as for the upper layer. Similarly, the water conductivity is the highest – 0.2 cm day-1 for tundra polygons. For the lower water potentials, the differences in water conductivity increase to the decrease of soil water potential. At the lowest potential the water conductivity is the highest for sorted circles – 0.02 cm day-1 and the lowest in tundra polygons – 0.00002 cm day-1.

Opis:
The addition of biochar is often proposed to increase agricultural soil quality and crop yield, while at the same time sequestering carbon from the atmosphere to help mitigate global climate change. In this research, the pore-size distribution, and saturated hydraulic conductivity of sandy loam and clay loam soils amended with varying dosages (0-10% dry basis) and two different particle sizes (0.5-420 μm (PS1) or 421-841 μm (PS2)) of wood-derived biochar were investigated under compacted conditions (5, 10, or 15 standard Proctor rammer blows (5B, 10B, or 15B, respectively)). In the 5B compacted SL (SL-5B) soil, the volume of the soil fissures and transmission pores decreased, while the volume of the storage pores (SP) increased with increasing wood-derived biochar dosage. 23.1±0.9% of the volume of the 5B compacted clay loam (CL-5B) are storage pores, this value increased to 27.4±2.0% upon amendment with 10% PS1. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sandy loam-5B soil amended with 10% PS1 decreased from 6.8±0.3 to 0.80±0.03 mm h-1. The sandy loam farmland C emissions decreased by 0.071 tC ha-1 y-1, whereas CL farmland C emissions decreased by 0.091 tC ha-1 y-1.
