Opis:
The paper presents an attempt to assess the reaction of seeds to mechanical loads taking into account their geometry expressed as seed thickness and 1000 seed weight. The initial material comprised 33 genotypes of grain legume plants and included cultivars registered in the country and breeding lines that are subject to pre-registration trials. The analysis of variance revealed significant diversity of the cultivars and lines of the species studied in terms of each of the analysed trait. The highest weight of 1000 seeds were obtained for white lupine seeds and peas, the lowest for andean lupine seeds. The maximum deformation and energy were obtained for white lupine seeds, the lowest for pea seeds, the maximum force and module the lowest values were determined for narrow-leafed lupine and pea. The highest values of protein were obtained for andean and yellow lupine, a fat content for andean and white lupine. The fatty acid profile as much as 70% or more were linoleic and oleic acids. Against the background of all the species are distinguished by white lupine seeds with a high content of oleic acid and the lowest of linoleic acid, for yellow lupine were obtained the inverse ratio of the two acids.

Opis:
The basic objective of the research was to investigate and determine variations in the physico-chemical properties of the arable layer (Ap) of calcareous soils which belong to the group of lithogenic soils. The above objective was achieved by determining the following physical soil parameters: static and dynamic water resistance of soil aggregates as well as the state of their secondary aggregation following static and dynamic action of water. The above mentioned physico-mechanical properties were determined for wet aggregate models, wet aggregate models subjected to freezing and defreezing and dry "ones", i.e., brought from the appropriate level of moisture to the air-dry state. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the properties analysed in the study and their complex evaluation, samples were collected in such a way as to represent the most important and common groups of Rendzinas occurring in Poland. Hence, the material sampled for laboratory analyses developed from various parental rocks.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to find the effect of water regimes on soil sorptivity and humic components of organic matter. Physicochemical parameters were also determined. Steady state cumulative infiltration was the highest (60-100 mm) in non-irrigated upland soil and the lowest (8-10 mm) in waterlogged soil. The highest sorptivity of 4.0-4.5mmmin-1/2 was found in nonirrigated upland soil and the lowest in seasonally waterlogged soil (1.0-1.5 mm min-1/2). Organic carbon content of all soils was low (<1%), EC values were also low (< 4 dS m-1). Saturated moisture was high in waterlogged soil. The non-irrigated upland soils had a higher fraction of fulvic acid (0.15-0.2%), due to which they were more capable of infiltration, whereas waterlogged soils had a greater fraction of insoluble humic acid (0.29-0.35%) and exhibited less cumulative infiltration. Sorptivity decreased as the clay content, pH, EC, porosity and humic acid content of the soil increased.

Opis:
Four pedons of Alfisols were selected from the Experimental Station Mochełek to study chemical composition of the soil material. The study area is located in the south-western border of the Krajeńska Upland, on the border of two geomorphological formations: erosion surface of floating waters (fluviglacial formation) and rolling ground moraine (glacial material). The investigated soils were classified as Typical Hapludalfs (pedon 11,21 and 26) and Typical Glossudalfs (pedon 7). Chemical composition was analysed using the following methods: fusion with Na2CO3 and dissolving in the HF and HCIO4 mixture. Results were presented in an oxide form and molar ratios (SiO2/R2O3; SiO2/Al2O3; Si02/Fe203; Al2O3/Fe203) were calculated. In the studied soils, the content of SiO2 was from 78.21 to 90.00 %. The lowest SiO2 content was found in the illuvial horizons. Otherwise the illuvial process influenced Al2O3 and Fe2CO3 distribution, the highest amounts of which were found in the illuvial horizons. TiO2 (0.15 to 0.63 %), had similar profile distribution to K2O (1.74-3.88 %) and Na20 (0.61- 1.05 %). CaO and MgO contents were the highest in the parent material, including CaCO3 (pedon 11 and 26). However, the highest amount of MnO was observed in the surface horizons (0.56-0.58 %). Chemical composition of the studied soil material indicated a large influence of the illuvial process and particle-size on the total content and profile distribution of the analysed soil. However, the evident influence of parent material from which the analysed soils were formed, was not found.

Opis:
Influence of humic acids on soil environment is still subject of scientific discussions. The aim of above studies was to investigate the relationships between selected physicochemical properties of eleven peaty-muck soils and properties of humic acids isolated from these soils. The following parameters were determined for soils: total and organic carbon, density, ash, humifi- cation, and the water absorption index. Humic acids were described by: absorbance at 280 nm, absorbance ratios at 465 and 665 nm, at 260 and 665 nm, elemental composition and atomic ratios: H/C, O/H, O/C, C/N, the degree of internal oxidation, and the content of carboxylic and phenolic groups. Statistical analyses showed that an increase in density, humification, and water absorption indices of soils caused a significant increase in the humic acid parameters: absorbance at 280 nm, the oxygen content, O/H, O/C ratios, inter- nal oxidation degree, and functional groups. Statistically signifi- cant negative correlations were found for the same parameters of soils and for the hydrogen and carbon content as well as the H/C ratio of humic acids. The relationships showed that there was a pos- sibility to express the properties of humic acids on the basis of more simple parameters measured for soil and without time-consuming isolation of humic acids.

Opis:
The research was conducted in 1991-1997 on the soils from arable fields situated near Łódź. To the detailed research there were stated four soil profiles which were different as regards their grain composition (two sand and two silt soils, all shallow) and typology (two profiles of brown leached soils, one pseudopodzolic-gley soil and one fallow glossic grey-brown podzolic soil). Qualification of the directions of the alterations in the content of organic carbon and basic macroelements (P, K, Mg) in soil and hesitation of reaction, hydrolytic acidity and content of the exchangeable basic cations in the soil sorptive complex were the main target of our research. The result of the 7-year-long research showed that different changes took place in the features of the examined soils. However, the exact assignment of the direction of these alteractions is extremely complex and does not warrant getting a satisfying answer. It is the result of taking various agriculture actions which are necessary to the appropriate maintenance of the ecosystems.

Opis:
The present paper reviews content and phytoavailability of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the soils of seven selected regions in the former Tarnów province, considered to be particularly endangered by contamination by these metals. One hundred soil samples were collected, 50 from the 0-10 cm layer and 50 from the 40-50 cm layer and mixed meadow sward from the same places. Most of the examined soil samples had a natural heavy metal content with the exception of a few samples containing higher amounts of Cd, Ni, and Zn. A strong correlation between heavy metal content and soil sorptive capacity and the organic matter content and the level of soil fraction with particle diameter of <0.02 and <0.002 mm was observed. Analysis of heavy metals in plants revealed that the limit values of Cd and Zn content were exceeded only occasionally together with reduced fodder quality of the investigated sward.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to compile characteristics of some selected physical, physico-chemical and chemical properties of the reclaimed hydrogenic soils in the meadow part of the Przedmoście bog in the context of new forming plant communities. Melioration work conducted in this area before the Second World War ended peat accumulation processes. Consequently, drying peat began to disintegrate and mineralise. Analyses of floral lists proved that the existing vegetation replaced the original bog plant communities, which flourished in this area in the past. Descriptions of profiles point to the existence of mixed formations (gyttja, peat) often containing high quantities of CaCO3. Peat formations present in the profiles are usually at the advanced degree of decomposition (H>7) and contain substantial quantities of ash. This high degree of ash content and bulk density results in strong compaction and muddy soil horizons. A low coefficient of C/N showed intense mineralization of organic matter in the upper soil horizons.

The aim of the research was to determine the changes in number of microorganisms in soil under ecological and conventional cultivation of winter wheal. The number of bacteria was presented as a number of colony forming unit (CFU) acc. to Parkinson and after using all the observations according to FOR model. The number of colony forming units was presented in relation to: 1 g of fresh soil, 1 g of dry soil, 1 cm3 soil, 1 cm3 of soil dilution and 1 cm3 of soil porosity. The obtained results depended not only on the method of dealing with the samples and the way of measuring. They depended also on the used method of presenting the results. The used of FOR model allowed for evaluating the adequacy of the media for the needs of the observed microorganisms.
Liczebności tworzących kolonie jednostek wyrażono w stosunku do: 1 g świeżej masy gleby, 1 g suchej masy gleby, 1 cm3 gleby, 1 cm3 roztworu glebowego, 1 cm3 porowatości gleby. Użycie modelu FOR pozwala na dopasowanie użytych pożywek do potrzeb pokarmowych obserwowanych mikroorganizmów. Uzyskiwane rezultaty zależą nie tylko od sposobu postępowania z próbkami glebowymi, ale także od sposobu hodowania i pomiaru bakterii.
