Opis:
Appropriate irrigation and nitrogen fertilization, along with suitable crop management strategies, are essential prerequisites for optimum yields in agricultural systems. This research attempts to provide a scientific basis for sustainable agricultural production management for the North China Plain and other semi-arid regions. Based on a series of 72 treatments over 2003-2008, an optimized water and nitrogen scheme for winter wheat/summer maize cropping system was developed. Integrated systems incorporating 120 mm of water with 80 kg N ha-1 N fertilizer were used to simulate winter wheat yields in Hebei and 120 mm of water with 120 kg N ha-1 were used to simulate winter wheat yields in Shandong and Henan provinces in 2000-2007. Similarly, integrated treatments of 40 kg N ha-1 N fertilizer were used to simulate summer maize yields in Hebei, and 80 kg N ha-1 was used to simulate summer maize yields in Shandong and Henan provinces in 2000-2007. Under the optimized scheme, 341.74 107 mm ha-1 of water and 575.79 104 Mg of urea fertilizer could be saved per year under the wheat/maize rotation system. Despite slight drops in the yields of wheat and maize in some areas, water and fertilizer saving has tremendous long-term eco-environmental benefits.

Opis:
In the North China Plain, it is a matter of urgency to explore the feasibility of using biodegradable film to replace polyethylene film. A field experiment was conducted by covering soils with polyethylene white film, biodegradable white film, biodegradable black film, while the control remained uncovered. This study analysed the effects of using different film types on summer maize dry matter accumulation and transfer, grain yield and yield components during the 2016 and 2017 summer maize growing seasons. Results showed that, for both growing seasons, compared with non-mulching, dry matter translocation, dry matter transfer efficiency of vegetative organs and grain yield for plants following polyethylene white film and biodegradable white film treatments were always lower. However, dry matter accumulation, dry matter translocation, dry matter transfer efficiency, grain yield, and the contribution of dry matter translocation to grain yield before flowering in biodegradable black film treatments significantly increased by 21.0, 33.3, 21.4, 12.6, and 18.5%, respectively. Only the black biodegradable film could increase grain yield as determined by the 1000 kernel mass. Results indicate that black biodegradable films are a viable alternative to polyethylene film in summer maize production in the North China Plain.

Opis:
Fruit biomechanics is needed for quality determination, multiscale modelling and engineering design of fruit processes and equipments. However, these determined fruit biomechanics data often have obvious differences for the same fruit or tissue. In order to investigate it, the fruit biomechanics based on anatomy was reviewed in this paper. First, the anatomical characteristics of fruit biomaterials were described at the macroscopic ‘tissue’ level and microscopic ‘cellular’ level. Subsequently, the factors affecting fruit biomechanics based on anatomy and the relationships between fruit biomechanics, texture and mechanical damage were summarised according to the published literature. Fruit biomechanics is mainly affected by size, number and arrangement of cells, quantity and volume of intracellular spaces, structure, thickness, chemical composition and permeability of cell walls, and pectin degradation level and turgor pressure within cells based on microanatomy. Four test methods and partial determined results of fruit biomechanics were listed and reviewed. The determined mechanical properties data of fruit are only approximate values by using the existing four test methods, owing to the fruit biomaterials being non-homogeneous and living. Lastly, further aspects for research on fruit biomechanics were proposed for the future.
