Opis:
This article presents a case study of the Polish American Economic Forum as an example of public transnational behavior in intertwining economic and political spheres. The organization was formed in 1989, primarily by Solidarity refugees and other contemporary migrants, along with a small number of Polish Americans and WWII émigrés who played salient roles. The migrants utilized cross-national networks and bi-cultural knowledge to create a nonprofit organization to promote investment in Poland’s emerging private sector economy, which they also defined as political support for the new government. The transnational networks of these contemporary Polish migrants in the U.S. were simultaneously embedded in both the home and host countries.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issues pertinent to a practical dimension of “virtual transnationalism”, understood as the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), especially phone and Internet communications by Polish transnational migrants in Norway, Germany and the United Kingdom. This article reviews the relevant literature on spatial mobility, family practices and technology, as well as their mutual connectivity. The findings first take a long-view on the historically emanated crucial change in the accessibility of ICTs to Poles abroad, subsequently moving on to a discussion of the matter with respect to the contemporary post-2004 migrant families. The wide-spread of technology is examined, with a resulting framework showing various engagements with ICTs, dependant on the capacity and motivation of the kinship members in both sending and receiving countries. The findings identify preconditions for using technology-enabled channels as tools for mitigating certain issues arising from separation, as well as the barriers that determine who, how and why uses (or rejects to use) the ICTs, adopting an intersectional perspective (age, skills, social capital) on the one hand, and, on the other hand, looking at individual alternative realizations of family practices beyond borders.

Ireland has become one of the main destination countries for Polish migrants after Poland’s EU accession in 2004. While much of the literature on Polish migration to Ireland post-2004 focuses on its labour-market element, in this paper we analyse the political participation of Polish migrants. We utilise data from a survey conducted by the Centre of Migration Research (University of Warsaw) with Polish migrants in Ireland which documents low levels of political engagement as measured by voting turnout in Polish presidential and parliamentary elections as well as the Irish local elections and elections to the European Parliament.A lack of knowledge about political participation rights or how to engage in voting is one explanation for the low levels of voting, especially in Irish local and European parliamentiary elections. Another explanation may be the attitude that migrants have towards the political system and how they can influence it. Polish migrants predominantly report that they have no or little influence on politics in Poland and have relatively less trust in the authorities and politicians there (compared to Ireland). The key individual-level characteristic affecting Polish migrant respondents’ electoral participation in Ireland is their (lack of) voting habit formed before migration.

The main aim of this paper is to assess the extent to which the 2016 Brexit referendum impacted on the decisions of young Polish and Lithuanian migrants to stay in the UK or return to the country of origin. We analyse information from 76 in-depth semi-structured interviews with Lithuanians and Poles living in the UK, as well as those who have returned to Lithuania and Poland since June 2016. We find that, for our interviewees, the referendum had little impact on the decision to stay in the UK or return to the country of origin, giving way, instead, to work, family and lifestyle considerations. Only for a select few did it act as a trigger, either adding to other reasons which eventually prompted the return to Lithuania or Poland, or motivating people to secure their rights in the UK and delay plans to leave the country. We conclude by discussing our results together with existing research on transnationalism and life-course migration theory: regardless of interviewees’ decisions to stay or return, these were never final, stressing the fluid nature of migration and the desire of our interviewees to maintain ties across multiple places.

The article summarizes sixteen years of research and academic publishing of the Research Group on Mass Migrations in the 19th and 20th centuries, Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences (IH PAN). The group focuses on mass migrations as a social and historical phenomenon integral to the understanding of the history of nations, regions and humanity as a whole, and responsible for shaping much of the human experience. It concentrates on the European and Transatlantic sphere in the second half of the 20th century, examined from a wide perspective while not losing sight of the specific time and place. The group comprises six scholars, each carrying out individual research projects. At the same time, they co-operate in stimulating and popularizing the research on migrations as a human phenomenon of universal geo-historical nature. The Work Group achieves this by organizing annual multidisciplinary conferences attended by scholars from Poland and abroad (Ukraine, France, Russia, Spain). The proceedings of these conferences are published in a series entitled “Migrations and Society” (12 volumes published so far, the 13th in print). Apart from the materials presented at the conferences, this publication also includes reviews, informative articles, etc. (“Reviews and Opinions” section). Every volume, usually focusing on a particular subject, presents a wide range of migration themes, including general issues (such as diaspora creation, feminization and the evolution of structures and directions of waves of migration), and especially detailed studies of various migration types (political and forced migrations, decolonizatory, regional – i.e. African, Latin American), emergence of new ethnic minorities, problems of Moslem immigrant societies, the role of churches, the fate of female migrants, processes of integration, conflicts of identity and culture etc. The Spanish speaking world is aptly represented in this publication, reflecting not only its place in global migration processes but also the close cooperation of the Work Group with their colleagues at the Spanish Historical Institute, “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas”, which has led to two joint conferences, research scholarships, joint publications etc. In the choice of conference and publication topics the work group tries to pursue and popularize the perception of migrations as a natural and inevitable historical process with various triggers, forms, and results, a universal phenomenon and a cause for deep transformations of structure, consciousness and culture, not only in societies accepting migrants but also in those they left. The conferences organized by the IH PAN Work Group have gained a level of recognition among migration researchers and institutions, and the series “Migrations and Society” became a useful tool of academic teaching.

Opis:
The article describes the main directions and reasons for educational migration in Europe as well as the Europeanization of the educational strategies of the young Poles. Those strategies are beginning to resemble the behavioural patterns of their peers from other EU countries. Nowadays, it is becoming more and more common for the Poles to take up studies abroad. The text provides an analysis of the official data about educational migration in various EU countries and a description of the author’s own research among Polish students in London based on participating observation, interviews and questionnaires. Official data about educational migration in the EU indicate that students often take up university studies in the states which share a border with the sending country. In consequence, they can keep being mobile and frequently change their place of residence. They increase their chances in the labour markets of both countries and they do not make hasty assumptions as to their country of settlement. Moreover, the analysis of the Poles studying in London indicates that educational migrants are prepared to look for a job not only in the sending country and the country of university study, but also in other European countries. The migrants educated abroad can apply for more attractive jobs in Europe, and thus they are better prepared and more prone to Europeanization or to making proper use of the EU rights connected with free movement of persons, services and capital. Their career perspectives are not limited to the sending country and the country of university study, but include also vocational projects in other EU countries. The example of the Poles in London shows that educational migrants constitute a special group, different from labour migrants. They can speak several foreign languages and have had migration experience even before taking up university studies. They are either children of multinational marriages or are in relationship with foreigners.

Opis:
The article analyzes the discourse in social sciences on the process of adaptation of migrants to a host society. The discourse is based on „integration theories”. Such an approach creates some difficulties and drawbacks. Therefore, an alternative approach grounded in empirical data on Chechen refugees in Poland is presented. The model is based on the concept of „adaptive strategies”. A „strategy” stresses human agency over structural pressures. The adaptive strategies of the Chechens in Poland are expressed in two contexts, i.e. a host society, explained by „new assimilation theories,” and transnational space. The strategies are applied in the process of reconstructing everyday life and while entering the social structures of the host society. The Chechens in Poland reconstruct their everyday life following patterns acquired in Chechnya. What is more, they use modern technologies to reproduce Chechen culture in Poland. Since the assistance offered by the Polish governmental and nongovernmental institutions to refugees and asylum seekers is insufficient, it often happens that the Chechens in Poland can receive support only from members of their own community in Poland. Owing to that support they are able to survive and adapt to the new environment.

IMMIGRANTS' TRANSNATIONALISM

GLOCALIZATION
Opis:
Although the interaction and the resulting interdependence of the involved parties on different sides of a state-national border is the constitutive component of the accepted understanding of the concept of transnationalism, the impact of immigrants’ transnational engagements on the home-country side of interconnection created by this phenomenon has thus far remained largely underexplored. This essay addresses this issue in a comparative-historical assessment of the effects of transnational engagements of past and present immigrants in America on the economies, civic-political affairs, material and symbolic culture, and social relations of their home-country localities. The transformative effects of immigrant transnational engagements on their home countries are treated in terms of glocalization understood as the process of simultaneous homogenization and heterogeneization of economic, political, and sociocultural forms.

This paper examines the politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America from the transnational perspective. Vietnamese immigrants’ politics are transnational due to two factors: their life experiences with the communists in Vietnam, and the current political situation in the home country. The impact these two factors have upon the politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America is complex. Although most Vietnamese living in America are anticommunist, they do not share the same level of hostility toward the government in Vietnam. This paper provides some insights into the complex politics of Vietnamese immigrants in America which are transnational and ‘disjunctive.’

Opis:
Post-accession emigration from Central Europe, and Poland in particular, is an important feature of contemporary migration flows in Europe. While there is now a substantial body of research on Polish migration to the UK exploring one of the largest post-accession flows, there has been less focus on other destination countries. This paper is based on a qualitative study of Polish migrants in Norway, the most common destination country in Scandinavia for post-accession migrants. The paper explores return considerations among Polish migrants in Norway through a three-fold focus: first, exploring the notion of Polish post-accession migration as liquid and temporary; second, questioning the primacy of economic factors in understanding return considerations; and third, adopting a transnational framework for the analysis. The paper argues that work and family considerations are key to migrants’ decision-making processes and experiences, and play out differently depending on highly individual circumstances. Yet, despite the fact that open borders within the EU and EEA area support the notion of «liquid migration», it is found that in migrants’ considerations about return to the country of origin, as in their lived experience, the option of a «life in motion» is not a preferred solution. Rather, for most migrants work and family have to be eventually located in one place: either here, or there.

This paper explores the ways in which young people aged 12 to 18 who were born in Central and Eastern European EU countries but now live in the United Kingdom construct their future imaginaries in the context of Brexit. It reports on findings from a large-scale survey, focus groups and family case studies to bring an original perspective on young migrants’ plans for the future, including mobility and citizenship plans, and concerns over how Britain’s decision to leave the European Union might impact them. While most of the young people planned to stay in Britain for the immediate future, it was clear that Brexit had triggered changes to their long-term plans. These concerns were linked to uncertainties over access to education and the labour market for EU nationals post-Brexit, the precarity of their legal status and their overall concerns over an increase in racism and xenophobia. While our young research participants expressed a strong sense of European identity, their imaginaries rarely featured ‘going back’ to their country of birth and instead included narratives of moving on to more attractive, often unfamiliar, destinations. The reasons and dynamics behind these plans are discussed by drawing on theories of transnational belonging.

Opis:
In recent years, the concept of transnationalism has become one of the main analytical tools used to assess the mobility patterns of Central and Eastern European populations. This work studies the transnational activities of Ukrainian immigrants in Spain. It examines three areas of transnational behaviour: travelling to the country of origin, the frequency of non-direct contact with the communities of origin and remittances. Our objective is to examine how gender, legal status and type of family unit (multilocal/non-multilocal) affect the frequency and extent of transnational activities. Most of the statistical data presented in this article come from the National Immigrant Survey (ENI-2007) conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (Spain). The study confirms that family ties play a crucial role in establishing and maintaining links between countries of origin and destination. It also reveals that the legal status of Ukrainian immigrants in Spain has a great impact on patterns of transnational behaviour. In this sense, it is evident that institutional factors must be included in analyses of migratory processes from a transnational perspective.

Starting from the general Steven Vertovec’s definition of transnationalism, this paper uses four out of six of his takes on the mentioned term. Transnationalism as the social morphology, type of consciousness, mode of cultural reproduction and (re)construction of ‘place’ or locality – each of these meanings became a contribution to considerations related to issues oscillating around a broadly and variously understood culture.

The text aims to analyze the process of empowerment of immigrant women who set up and develop their own business activities. The first part of the article discusses current research concerning female immigrant entrepreneurship. Five main threads are distinguished: women migrants’ enterprises as a manifestation of emancipation and self-realization, self-employment as a result of double discrimination, the phenomenon of “hidden” female entrepreneurship, the feminized profile of some labour market niches and the problem of reconciling professional activities and family life. The second part of the text intends to relate these findings to the description of activities of immigrant entrepreneurs in Poland. The research presented consists of qualitative interviews with highly-qualified migrant women from post-Soviet states who run their own business. Their firms operate in transnational spaces; immigrants take advantage of the resources of migrant networks, their own cultural background and inter-cultural competences, which influence the base of contractors, relations with employers and coworkers, as well as the locations where the businesses is established and developed. The women associate their achievements with the need for independence and personal development.

Migracje z Polski do Berlina mają kilkusetletnią historię. Migrations from Poland to Berlin have a centuries-old history. Nowadays, the migration in Berlin is one of the most important centres of Polish people abroad. For several years, one can observe the process of transnationalization of this cluster. This article aims to track changes of functions in a Polish Roman Catholic parish in the context of ongoing transformations. Transformations of migration are in fact a challenge for institutions involved in the organization of life of Poles abroad, including the Church. They reflect in the evolutions of the religious practices of people taking part in them, in their moral attitude, ways of thinking and so on.
