This article examines three aborted publishing projects involving popular science magazines from the early 19th century, two of them in Cracow, one in Kalisz. Their history has been reconstructed thanks to the publishers' prospectuses found in collections of the Jagiellonian Library.
W niniejszym tekście opisano trzy polskie inicjatywy prasowe z I połowy XIX wieku, które nie doczekały się realizacji. Dwie z nich powstały w Krakowie i jedna w Kaliszu. Ich poznanie było możliwe dzięki odnalezionym w zbiorach Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej prospektom wydawniczym, w których wydawcy przedstawili swoje zamierzenia.

This article attempts to present the structure and the functioning of the ‘Słowo Polskie’ Publishing Company in Lwów in 1895–1938 on the basis of primary source material from the Ukrainian Central Historical Archives in Lwów. Słowo Polskie [The Polish Word], a newspaper aligned at fi rst with the Galician democrats and later the national democrats, was a flagship of the company. Its fall triggered off the liquidation of the whole Publishing Company

In 2019 the Polish Jazz Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Its activities over that period were accompanied by countless publications in the following categories: 1) regular periodicals; 2) mimeographed typescripts and bulletins; 3) festival programmes and graphics; 4) others (flyers, ephemera, posters). The aim of this article is to examine the mechanisms of PJA publicizing its activities and using media to reach out to the jazz fan community.
W bieżącym, 2019 roku przypada jubileusz pięćdziesięciolecia Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Jazzowego. Wieloletnia aktywność organizacji oraz różnorodność podejmowanych przedsięwzięć, nawet w ujęciu ogólnym pobudza do refleksji: 1) regularne periodyki; 2) powielane maszynopisy, biuletyny; 3) programy festiwali (broszury festiwalowe); 4) inne (druki, publikacje akcydentalne, plakaty). Celem artykułu jest ukazanie mechanizmów promocji PSJ oraz jego inicjatyw i ewolucji medialnych (tu: prasowo-wydawniczych) sposobów dotarcia do fanów jazzu.

This article explores the beginnings of Polish press studies. The boundaries of the early history of the discipline are fixed by reference to some important events; the period itself is divided into two phases. The first, dominated by mere description, was followed by a second phase characterized by the appearance of aggregate data and more theory-oriented approach. The aim of the article is to recount the research in this field, and to refine and verify some of its elements.
Przedmiotem artykułu są początki prasoznawstwa. Granice analizowanego okresu wyznaczyły ważne wydarzenia związane z rozwojem tej nauki. Analizowany okres podzielono na dwa krótsze. W pierwszym — deskryptywnym, w zasadzie ograniczano się do opisywania badanego zjawiska, w drugim zaobserwować było można kumulowanie wyników badań i próby wysuwania pierwszych wniosków teoretycznych. Celem artykułu jest przypomnienie dotychczasowych ustaleń oraz doprecyzowanie i weryfikacja niektórych ich elementów.

This article deals with the subject of the reception of periodic press in Royal Prussia in the most authoritative histories of the Polish press in the 18th century. Although the newspapers and periodicals of that region make up c. 25% of the total output of the press published in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, they have been ignored or at best marginalized, even in the most comprehensive and broadly-based studies.

Galicia’s autonomous status was in fact a doubletrack affair. On the one hand Galicia became a shining example of freedom and autonomy, embedded in the new constitutional order of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, while on the other hand it was tied down to a monarchical absolutism which offered only limited protection of individual rights. The press in particular was caught in the dilemmas produced by this situation, especially in the sensitive areas of political loyalty and religion.
Autonomiczna Galicja była krajem dwóch prędkości. Z jednej strony stanowiła konstytucyjnie afiliowany kaganek wolności i autonomii, z drugiej — związana z monarchistycznym absolutyzmem — limitowała ochronę jednostki i przyznanych jej obywatelskich praw. Swoistym zakładnikiem owej dychotomii działań — w imię ochrony władzy i religii — stała się prasa.

This article presents a concise description of the development of the Polish press in the years 1864–1918. The main focus of the work is on the quantitative growth and territorial distribution of the press. The study shows that over 5,886 Polish titles were being published in the years 1864–1918. The largest number of newspapers appeared in Galicia (2,323), a slightly lower number in the Russian Partition (2,018), and the lowest amount in the Prussian Partition (613); what’s more, around 371 titles were being issued on the territories belonging to the partitioning powers, and 561 titles by émigrés.Zarys statystyki prasy polskiej 1864–1918Artykuł zawiera zwięzłą charakterystykę rozwoju oraz prasy polskiej w latach 1864–1918. Celem opracowania jest określenie jej ilościowego wzrostu oraz terytorialnego rozmieszczenia. W wyniku badań ustalono, że w latach 1864–1918 ukazało się aż 5886 tytułów drukowanych w języku polskim. Najwięcej pism ukazywało się w Galicji (2323), nieco mniej w zaborze rosyjskim (2018), zaś najmniej w prowincji pruskiej (613); ponadto 371 tytułów drukowano w głębi państw zaborczych oraz 561 na emigracji

THE PICTURE OF THE POLISH EXILE
Opis:
Until the late seventies of the last century, the authorities of the People's Republic of Poland ,for political reasons, treated its citizens work trips to capitalist countries as an undesirable phenomenon, officially nonexistent. The information on Polish emigration of the time rarely appeared in the then press. The situation changed in the late 1980 and 1981 as a result of ongoing socio-political transformation. The press began to place reports on conditions of living outside Poland. Authors of a published material - depending on the political "inclination" of a newspaper where they were employed – either expressed sympathy for people’s fate in exile, or they mocked at their irrational decision to leave the country, or even accused of lack of patriotism and selling out to the "mammon", etc. The press releases at large, however, were characterized by considerable diversity both in a description of the exile as well as its assessment. The presented text attempts to reproduce the picture of the then Polish exile which Polish newspaper reader could have find in the official press.
