Celem artykułu była prezentacja zjawiska solidarności kobiet ujętych w kontekst Strajku Kobiet. Solidarność kobieca przedstawiona została w odniesieniu do dwóch kategorii kobiet. Pierwszej reprezentowanej przez kobiety znajdujące się w fazie ontogenetycznej, w której możliwa jest prokreacja. Druga dotyczyła tych kobiet, które nie mogą już urodzić dziecka. Analizując zebrane dane empiryczne autorce chodziło o uzyskanie odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jaki charakter ma solidarność kobieca, zwłaszcza ta, która łączy pokolenia. Zjawisko solidarności kobiet zaprezentowane zostało w dwóch perspektywach: manifestującym się w codziennym życiu rodzin, a także mającym miejsce ze względu na wyjątkową sytuację społeczną, jaką był Strajk Kobiet.
The article aimed to present the phenomenon of solidarity of women included in the context of the 2020–2021 women’s strike protests in Poland (called the Women Strike). Women’s solidarity was presented pertaining to two categories of women. The first, represented by women in the ontogenetic phase, in which procreation is possible. The second concerned those women who could no longer give birth to a child. By analyzing the collected empirical data, the author wanted to describe the character of women’s solidarity, especially the one that connects generations. The phenomenon of women’s solidarity has been presented from two perspectives. It manifested in the everyday life of families. It was also seen under the exceptional social situation, which was the Women Strike.

Opis:
Compared to other Polish emigrant cohorts, the broadly understood Solidarity emigration to the USA and Canada of the early 1980s occupies a distinctive place. Their literary output produced for the most part in English came quickly and entered the mainstream book market already at the turn of the century. Even though their fiction deployed fairly typical themes of dislocation, emigrant experience and construction of immigrant identity in the receiving country, its uniqueness rests in the two-fold vision of two very closely related generations: the first generation emigrants who left Poland as adults, as well as their children, classified as the generation 1.5, who experienced growing up in two countries. In their semi autobiographical fiction, writers representing the older generation such as Eva Stachniak and Czesław Karkowski, devote much of their work to justifying the decision to emigrate and attempt to position their successful characters within the narrative of the American dream. In contrast, younger generation authors such as Karolina Waclawiak and Dagmara Dominczyk, construct a much darker vision of the fragmented immigrant identity that leaves their fictional characters psychologically fragile. In their struggle, they identify the cause of this suffering in their parents’ choice to leave the home country.

The aim of this paper is to present support rendered by Polish veterans in Canada for the “Polish cause” in 1980s – i.e. during the brief “carnival of Solidarity” and subsequent period of martial law which resulted in massive wave of emigrants leaving the country between 1981– –1987. The scope of engagement of Polish WWII veterans settled in Canada into various forms of assistance for the Solidarity movement in Poland (demonstrations, petitions, fundraising) and combatants’ attitude towards the new wave of political and economic immigrants arriving from Poland to the Country of Maple Leaf in 1980s. is presented on the basis of archival documents (by-laws, regulations, financial reports, internal correspondence) and press releases (“SPK w Kanadzie” – quarterly magazine of the Polish Combatants Association in Canada).

The article includes a critical review of the existing one-sided theories of Solidarity movement in Poland. On that base the author draws an outline of a new, multidimensional approach. The proposed theory is intended as a synthesis of the main axiological and pragmatic threads which are to be found in the debate about Solidarity as well as in the sociological theories of social movements.

W niniejszym artykule została zwrócona uwaga na liczne dylematy, które towarzyszą współczesnej rodzinie, która nadal, pomimo wielu przemian strukturalno-funkcjonalnych, realizuje spory zakres zobowiązań w ramach niepisanego kodeksu moralnego nakazującego wzajemne świadczenie różnych usług i form wsparcia. W pierwszej części artykułu została przybliżona istota solidarności rodzinnej, w części drugiej – główne zasady, na których się ona opiera. W części trzeciej przedstawione zostały dylematy związane z realizacją zasad solidarności rodzinnej wobec najstarszego pokolenia w rodzinie. W części czwartej artykułu przedstawiono dylematy związane z realizacją zasad solidarności rodzinnej wobec młodego pokolenia w rodzinie.
This article draws attention to the many dilemmas that arise in the modern family; despite many structural and functional changes, the family continues to face a large range of obligations under an unwritten moral code that requires the mutual provision of various services and forms of support. The first part of the article discusses the essence of family solidarity, while the second part considers the main principles on which this solidarity is based. The third part presents dilemmas connected with implementing principles of family solidarity in regard to the eldest generation in the family, and the fourth part covers dilemmas related to implementing principles of family solidarity in regard to the young generation in the family.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest rozważenie najczęściej wskazywanych przyczyn powstania Solidarności na Wybrzeżu z perspektywy podstawowych założeń kilku wybranych teorii ruchów społecznych. Autorka koncentruje się na „wielkich” koncepcjach teoretycznych – teoriach nowych ruchów społecznych i mobilizacji zasobów, starając się ukazać ich silne strony, ale też przyczyny, dla których żadna z tych perspektyw nie jest w pełni adekwatna.
This article examines the ideas most commonly put forward to explain the emergence of the Solidarity social movement on the Coast of Poland from the perspective of social movement theories. Focusing on „grand” theories, namely the ones of new social movements and resource mobilization, it discusses their strengths and weaknesses, indicating at the same time the reasons why none of them is fully appropriate to explain the emergence of Solidarity.

Międzypokoleniowe relacje są istotną częścią życia rodziny, budują więzi między jej członkami. Ich bazę stanowi emocjonalne, praktyczne, finansowe wspieranie się. W czasach gdy struktura rodziny i jej funkcje ulegają przemianom, gdy pojawia się wielość form życia małżeńskiego i rodzinnego, stawiane są pytania o siłę i znaczenie solidarności rodzinnej. W przedstawionym artykule podjęto próbę prześledzenia, czy tradycyjnie przypisane normy dotyczące wzajemnego wspierania między rodzicami i dorosłymi dziećmi nadal obowiązują w różnych państwach w Europie. Sprawdzano też, czy rozwody, rodziny rekonstruowane, kohabitacja osłabiają, a może niszczą, solidarność rodzinną.
Intergenerational relationships are a key part of family life, involving the construction of bonds between family members based on emotional, practical, and financial support. In times when family structures and functions are changing and diverse forms of marriage and family life occur, questions are raised about the strength and meaning of family solidarity. In this article, an attempt has been made to consider whether traditional prescriptive norms concerning the mutual support of parents and adult children still apply in different European countries. The author also examines whether divorces, reconstituted families, or cohabitation weaken or even destroy family solidarity.

This paper examines the waves of migration between Vietnam and fraternal socialist countries in the Eastern bloc from the 1950s until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Arguing for a collectivist migration framework, it compares and contrasts the various generations of architecture student migrants, their multidirectional movements, and, for most, their repatriation to Vietnam. There is no single uniform narrative of socialist mobility. Each wave was driven by different war and postwar exigencies, and the groups of migrants who left Vietnam confronted a range of unique challenges related to such factors as location, gender and assignment overseas (i.e. student or worker). This paper has two objectives: first, to decentre the West from hegemonic discussions of Vietnamese diasporas in order to advance a broader understanding of the historical development of overseas Vietnamese communities in what are now post-socialist countries; and second, to complicate the story of Vietnamese migrants in Central and Eastern Europe by arguing that past socialist mobilities are constitutive of much capitalist-driven migration today. An examination of different socialist migration trajectories and experiences of living overseas across generations provides important insights into how socioeconomic and political changes that came about in Vietnam with the fall of the Berlin Wall shaped the personal lives and professional futures of returnees and their kin. It also serves to bring the study of socialist migration histories more deeply into the epistemological and methodological fold of contemporary Vietnamese studies.

This article presents a case study of the Polish American Economic Forum as an example of public transnational behavior in intertwining economic and political spheres. The organization was formed in 1989, primarily by Solidarity refugees and other contemporary migrants, along with a small number of Polish Americans and WWII émigrés who played salient roles. The migrants utilized cross-national networks and bi-cultural knowledge to create a nonprofit organization to promote investment in Poland’s emerging private sector economy, which they also defined as political support for the new government. The transnational networks of these contemporary Polish migrants in the U.S. were simultaneously embedded in both the home and host countries.

The author poses the following questions: (1) What forms are social movements adopting today, particularly in response to the epidemic crisis? (2) Are we observing the practice of grassroots solidarity reaching beyond the charitable model of support? She seeks answers taking the Facebook group Visible Hand [Widzialna Ręka] as an example; it was established shortly after lockdown had been announced in the first quarter of 2020, as a form of social organisation aiming to provide mutual aid during the difficult time of the pandemic. She asserts that communities organising themselves in a manner similar to Visible Hand are an example of how external crises highlight problems existing within societies and contribute to their destabilisation. While deliberating over whether the initiative in question is one of ad-hoc episodes of non-organised collective activity, a discussion-and-contact forum, or perhaps a contemporary social movement, she reaches for Manuel Castells’ concept of networked social movements—and asserts that Visible Hand may be acknowledged as a social movement. In closing her paper, she considers the connections between moral bond and solidarity.
Autorka stawia następujące pytania: (1) Jakie formy przybierają ruchy społeczne współcześnie, zwłaszcza w odpowiedzi na kryzys epidemiczny? (2) Czy obserwujemy praktykę oddolnej solidarności wychodzącą poza charytatywny model wsparcia? Poszukuje odpowiedzi na przykładzie działałności grupy Facebookowej Widzialna Ręka, która powstała wkrótce po ogłoszeniu lockdownu w pierwszym kwartale 2020 roku jako forma organizacji społecznej mającej na celu pomoc wzajemną w trudnym czasie pandemii, Twierdzi, że społeczności organizujące się w sposób zbliżony do Widzialnej Ręki są przykładem tego, jak kryzysy zewnętrzne uwypuklają problemy istniejące wewnątrz społeczeństw i przyczyniają się do zachwiania ich struktur. Zastanawiając się, czy obserwowana inicjatywa to doraźne epizody niezorganizowanego działania zbiorowego, forum dyskusyjno-kontaktowe, a może współczesny ruch społeczny, sięga do koncepcji usieciowionych ruchów społecznych Manuela Castellsa. Twierdzi, że Widzialną Rękę można uznać za ruch społeczny, Na koniec rozważa powiązania między więzią moralną a solidarnością.

The article discusses mutual relations between the Polish American ethnic group and new immigrants from Poland who were arriving to the United States in the 1980s. Th e author claims that despite high expectations of both sides the relations were far from harmonious and mutually rewarding, provides examples and formulates reasons thereof. The emphasis is put on the differences between the two groups. The experiences of post-World War II Polish exiles in their contacts with the established Polish diaspora serve as a point of reference.

Artykuł eksploruje obecność normy solidarności w potocznych koncepcjach miłości łączącej rodzeństwo oraz w doświadczaniu posiadania rodzeństwa wśród sióstr i braci. Na podstawie badań sondażowych techniką ankiety audytoryjnej z przewagą pytań o charakterze otwartym, przeprowadzonych w latach 2015–2016 wśród 226 studentów pierwszych lat studiów licencjackich na Wydziale Nauk Społecznych UAM, analizuje się atrybuty miłości między rodzeństwem, zalety i wady posiadania rodzeństwa oraz stopień zaufania wobec członków najbliższej rodziny. Uzyskane dane o charakterze jakościowym i ilościowym pozwalają na wniosek, że w dobie denormalizacji i desolidaryzacji zobowiązań rodzinnych, relacja łącząca rodzeństwo w okresie wczesnej dorosłości opiera się tym procesom. Jej istotą jest altruizm, szeroko rozumiane wsparcie, zaufanie, poświęcenie oraz bezinteresowność. W opracowaniu podejmuje się także próbę wskazania źródeł postrzegania rodzeństwa w tych kategoriach.
This paper explores the presence of norms of solidarity in widespread concepts of the love binding siblings, and in the experience of having siblings. The attributes of love between siblings, the advantages and disadvantages of having siblings, and degrees of confidence in nearest kin were analyzed on the basis of research using the auditory survey technique (with the majority of the questions being open) conducted in the years 2015-2016 on 226 students in their first year of bachelor’s degree studies at the Department of Social Sciences of the UAM. The quantitative and qualitative data makes it possible to conclude that in this time of a denormalization and desolidarization of family ties the relationship between siblings in early adulthood has resisted these processes. The essence of the relationship is altruism, in the sense of support, trust, dedication, and selflessness. An attempt is also made in the article to point to the source for viewing siblings in these categories.

Ostatnie ćwierćwiecze XX wieku będzie pamiętane za sprawą powstania politycznego islamu oraz upadku komunizmu. Początków tego pierwszego można się doszukiwać w zwycięstwie w rewolucji islamskiej w Iranie (1978–1979), a źródeł upadku komunizmu w rewolucji Solidarności w Polsce (1980–1981). Niniejszy artykuł analizuje obie te rewolucje oraz wskazuje niektóre podobieństwa i różnice między nimi. Skupia się zwłaszcza na dwóch aspektach, które każą inaczej ocenić istniejące teorie rewolucji. Pierwszym, wspólnym, jest religia, która jednak w obu przypadkach odegrała całkiem inną rolę. Drugi aspekt to proces rewolucyjny, który również przebiegał inaczej – w Iranie rozpoczynając okres terroru politycznego, a w Polsce umożliwiając pokojowe negocjacje między rządem a robotnikami, którzy ostatecznie otrzymali udział we władzy.
The last quarter of the twentieth century is marked by two important events: the rise of political Islam and the collapse of communism. One can trace the origins and the rise of political Islam to the victory of the Islamic revolution in Iran (1978-79) and the origins of the collapse of communism to Solidarity revolution in Poland (1980-81). This article explores these two revolutions and sheds light on certain similarities and differences. It specifi cally focuses on two aspects, challenging the existing theories of revolution. The first is what they have in common, i.e., the important albeit a different role that religion played in both revolutions. The second aspect explores the differences in the revolutionary processes, as the Iranian case concluded in uncompromising introduction of terror after its victory whereas Solidarnosc was from the beginning peaceful and willing to negotiate its demands with the authorities, and ultimately compromised to share power with the communists.

The paper examines the factors that determined the emergence of non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs) in Poland and their impact on the appropriation of development norms and practices by the Polish aid system. These processes are understood as a natural continuation of, on the one hand, the international appeal of the trade union and mass movement "Solidarność" in the 1980s and, on the other hand, the country’s participation, dating back to the Cold War era, in the system of development aid. The contemporary development cooperation system has been shaped by geo-political factors. Polish aid, however, has also benefited from its cooperation with the NGDO sector, which willingly shared its hands-on experience and know-how in providing humanitarian aid, development cooperation, and global education projects. The indirect influence of foreign donors on Polish development cooperation should likewise be acknowledged.
Artykuł przedstawia czynniki, które ukształtowały ewolucję polskich organizacji pozarządowych zaangażowanych w politykę rozwojową oraz wpływ tych podmiotów na przyswojenie praktyk i norm związanych z międzynarodową współpracą na rzecz rozwoju przez rządowy program „Polska pomoc”. Procesy te są rozumiane jako kontynuacja posłania NSZZ „Solidarność” do ludzi pracy Europy Wschodniej oraz zaangażowania Polski w międzynarodową współpracę na rzecz rozwoju jeszcze z czasów „zimnej wojny”. Współczesny system współpracy rozwojowej ukształtowany został przez czynniki geopolityczne. Niemniej jednak rządowy program „Polska pomoc” zyskał na współpracy z polskim sektorem pozarządowym, który podzielił się swoją wiedzę i doświadczeniem w dostarczaniu pomocy humanitarnej, współpracy rozwojowej oraz edukacji globalnej. Uwzględniono również pośredni wpływ zagranicznych darczyńców w analizowanych procesach.
